Read this book Jacob's Trouble, by O. Ariel.
It will tell you EXACTLY what will happen to America in the end times. As a matter of fact, it's already happening, but CNN won't tell you about it.

Dear betta! I believe that the waters on which the prostitute sits are all nations, peoples, and languages that have ever existed on earth or that will ever exist on earth. The beast is the spiritual 'powers that be' or the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Paul and Jesus commanded us concerning those who are in the Governance of the earthly kingdoms.
At this time, I believe that America is in the prophetic unfolding of the times of the gentile nations empires that were ordained by God to rule on earth until the coming of The Messiah in The Millennium Reign on earth. For it is written that eventually 10 worldwide rulers will arise atop of the beast and the beast from the sea will eventually be given a mouth that utters blasphemies against God Most High; replacing the mouth that was like a lion. Then it will continue to rule for 42 months or 3 1/2 years or 1260 days more. The trial of the mark of the beast with war on the saints of God Most High will be endured during this time period. Then, the abomination will be set up for 30-75 more days which causes desolation to be poured out upon the followers of the false worldly prophet known as the beast from the earth or the antichrist who take the mark.

Seems like water (and hence the sea) represents a densely populated area (where the first beast arose). If so, then the earth (land) may represent a scarcely populated area.
