Quite an alliteration you've got going there! [:D]

Are you planning a vacation this year? Where to?
I'm not sure yet. I'm trying to decide if a vacation is a budget priority for me this year.
I very much want to visit Jackson, WY and see all my friends there; and of course, the awesome and majestic Grand Tetons - the most beautiful place I've ever seen.

I don't really consider Jackson a vacation, though; more like a vital necessity. [sm=redhairsmile.gif]

As to actual vacations this year, I've been playing around with the idea of renting a beach cottage somewhere along the Atlantic coastline.

What has been your favorite vacation destination, and why?
Aside from the Grand Tetons, my next 2 favorite destinations (which tie with each other) are Pikes Peak / Colorado Springs, CO and Sandpoint, ID.

Colorado Springs was a small quaint little mountain town (at least it was 26 years ago; I've heard it's grown since then). Back in '82, though; I absolutely loved it. Pike's Peak was the very first time I saw mountains; and I was absolutely hooked.

Sandpoint, ID is another quaint little town on the shores of Lake Pend Orielle. I had the best time there, boating on the lake, riding my trike around town . . . and of course stomping grapes in a grape stomping contest at the local winery.

LOL, Cranky, as you can tell, I'm pretty laid back. I'm more into enjoying nature than I am of doing things.

My answers may not help you at all, but it was fun to participate in this thread.

Took a while to come up with that. It's beautiful, isn't it? [sm=cowboy.gif]

You've picked great places!

I've been to Sandpoint, and the Tetons and Jackson, but I haven't spent time in Colorado except for the airport.

I love the mountains. [sm=heart.gif][sm=heart.gif][sm=heart.gif]

Yes. A masterpiece of artistic expression. [sm=comp02.gif]

We should go on vacation together! [sm=icon_smile_idea.gif]

crankius -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/20/2008 2:32:18 PM)

That would be so much fun. Do you have a canoe?

WhiteRoseBlessings -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/20/2008 2:36:36 PM)

Not any longer. [:o]

Oh man, I loved to canoe! That's fun.

We could always rent a couple of 'em.

crankius -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/20/2008 2:47:10 PM)

Yes, we need to rent canoes.

I passed the tippy canoe test at girl scout camp. That makes me a canoe expert! [:D]

We have planned our summer vacation. We are going to the Oregon coast. We debated staying in a condo on the beach, but instead decided on a hotel on the Columbia River. We will get to watch the boats coming by--I'm just giddy about this!

Cranky, THIS isn't the coast of Oregon, but it is on the coast of Washington . . .

As to being a canoe expert, I'm probably definitely not . . . but I did learn from a quasi expert (though not via Girl Scouts). Does that count?

You can be an expert too. [sm=gradsmile.gif]

I went to your link. I like how the prices for buying a home are divided by those below 600k and those above 600k. They should include a "rustic shack" option for less than 400k. [8D]

The rentals look like a lot of fun!

crankius -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/20/2008 4:06:35 PM)

Mr. Cranky says my subtitle doesn't make any sense.

He says, "It looks like you picked up the dictionary and looked through the v's and picked words at random."

So I said, "Yes! That's exactly what I did!"

[sm=icon_smile_roll.gif]

It does make sense in an interesting sort of way, if you read it very slowly.

heehee! Nothing gets past Mr. Cranky.

As to the prices at Seabrook. That struck me funny also. It also told me that I won't be looking at Seabrook as a relocation option. [:o]

CoeurdeLeon -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/20/2008 5:22:16 PM)

Vacation isn't in our plans this year but I'll tell you about my favorite vacation spot.....The Outer Banks, NC

My grandparents used to take my sister and I there for 2 weeks every year. I LOVE the ocean and those were the best 2 weeks of the year for me. The last time we went was when I was 16. After that, my grandparents started going to Florida for the winter so no more summer vacations for my sister and I.

But.

Last summer I had the blessed opportunity to vacation with my sister and her family at the Outer Banks. It was THE absolute coolest thing to be there with her again. And having our kids there and showing them all the places we used to go and what used to be where and, and, and. It was just the best thing ever. I never thought I'd get to go back at all but to be able to do it with my sister was just too wonderful for words.[:)]

utilityfielder -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/20/2008 5:42:04 PM)

I have already taken 1 week of my vacation this year and I went to Texas. I will take a week and go watch some baseball. And I have not decided what to do with the other full week. And I will take a few days off here and there.

Oh wow. I just did a Google search on The Outer Banks.

Thanks a lot, Lioness. You just extensively added to my research list. [8D]

Just trying to be a blessing.[;)]

Seriously, I love it there. No boardwalk. Just beach and ocean and a totally laid-back lifestyle.

WhiteRoseBlessings -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/20/2008 5:54:27 PM)

I am totally enamoured.

My vacations days will probably be spent like last years vacation days - working on a career change and working around the house. [8D]

My favorite was a few years ago when I went camping at Cape Disappointment State park on the Washington coast where the Columbia River empties into the ocean. It was just me and the dog camping. OK, the camping kinda stank because my tent was the only tent in an area surrounded by RV's and it was right near the entrance and the bathrooms were shared by all the daytime park visitors so they were downright disgusting (even for a campground), but other than that... The last night, I packed the dog and I up and got a room at the Holiday Inn in Astoria which is "under" the bridge and was AMAZING!

Our vacations were usually visiting family. The first one we went on that wasn't to visit family was to Victoria BC.

To me, it depends entirely on the person. A lot of times, I love to be a hermit in my house. That can be so refreshing for me. I love to travel, but it always wears me out so sometimes I need a vacation from my vacation when doing that!

England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Make some plans, but not too many so you can be flexible, but not spend the entire day trying to find a place that's cool to go to! Ask locals for advice, don't forget your camera and have fun!

I have advice on must see places and such if you're interested. I'm assuming you'll be staying in Astoria?

This was the view from my hotel room when I stayed there.

And here is Miss Audrey barking at the evil dog in the hotel room mirror which I had to cover with a towel...

crankius -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/20/2008 11:15:08 PM)

Hey Phosy,

I sent you a pm.

phosadaud -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/21/2008 3:45:15 PM)

Someone remind me when I get home tonight to post some highlights here... I'm so bad at remembering names so you probably don't want a place saying "go to this one place that's somewhere around this other place that's really cool..." [8D]

crankius -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/21/2008 3:51:42 PM)

Two years ago we went to Galveston, Texas, and we thought it was a great trip for a family. We enjoyed the beach, and had a great time at Johnson Space Center. We stayed at the Harbor House Hotel at the port, and had a great time watching the boats.

phosadaud -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/21/2008 11:00:44 PM)

OK, the Astoria area (hope you don't mind me sharing some of my vacation pics from a couple years back):

Drive up to the Astoria Column. I didn't get to climb it because I had my doggie with me, be even so, the views from around the column are amazing! North to the Columbia River/bridge and looking south.

Or take the Astoria Riverfront Trolley. I couldn't with the dog again, but it looked like fun!

If you head over the smaller bridge towards Warrenton and the ocean, visit Fort Stevens State Park. There are old military ruins (this was the only base on the mainland US to be fired on in WWII by the Japanese) as well as a shipwreck: The Peter Iredale.

It's been quite a while since I've been, but Fort Clatsop is another great place to visit - especially if you are a Lewis & Clark history buff.

And of course, if you're a Goonie's fan, there is the Goonies house which you'll want to get good directions to because I thought I'd found it and took a picture... of the wrong house... [8D]

If you head over the bridge to the Washington side, and if you like old military stuff, visit Fort Columbia State park and it's 1903 vintage buildings and such.

And you MUST visit Cape Disappointment State Park. That's where I camped and it is beautiful - some of the beaches are only accessible by foot so they are somewhat secluded. There are also 2 lighthouses you can hike up to.

And head up the Long Beach Peninsula. There are all kinds of neat places to eat and shop, museums to visit and beaches (including one that you can drive on) and trails to hike.

And there are many more great places to see and things to do.

...Man, now I want to go back... [:(]

crankius -> RE: VACATIONS!!! (3/22/2008 12:08:03 AM)

Thanks for the great list! I will be saving it for when we go. So much fun!!!
