RJR_fan -> RE: What is one lie that you once believed, and how did you come to know the truth? (4/6/2008 4:56:31 PM)

The lie: that Christianity was nothing more than a system of internal religious experiences, and the only suitable goal for life was initiating others into that gnostic cluster of experiences. It was pointless to aspire to any influence or achievement in the world outside of my own skin. The truth: Jesus is Lord, not guru. He designed us for achievement, productivity, and fruitfulness in the larger world, the one outside of our own skins. He loved the world He created so much that He redeems us and conscripts us into His ongoing task of caring for it, improving it, making it better than we found it. In retrospect, personal weaknesses (autistic spectrum stuff) interacted with perverse incentives in the popular Christian culture with devastating personal results. 30+ years later, my testimony with my family is still injured. I'm still playing vocational catch-up, trying to finish my academic career prep at age 56, moving from one career toe-hold to the next. The victory: God's mercies, and better theology, have allowed me to enjoy victories in the areas most important to me.
