Trish is correct. :D There's little point anyway, we're in our summer now (we don't bother mucking around with solstices and equinoxes either, and it tends to reflect the actual weather patterns here better anyhow) and the long holidays are around Christmas, not in the middle of the year.
The mad days I think here are the days leading up to Christmas. For those last few days several shopping centres are open 24 hours (I believe one stays open for 72 hours STRAIGHT!) and the rest are open very extended hours (some councils won't have a bar of 24 hour trading).

Yeah, I've heard about the rigid trading hours over there.
It's only some centres (Parramatta and I think a few others), though.
I think the latest the local one is ever open at Christmas is midnight, possibly 10pm.
Frankly, shopping past midnight is insane, unless you do shift work.

Yeah, they did a referendum on extended trading hours, and it got knocked back.
Like you said though, unless you're a shift worker, why would you need to shop that late anyway?
