According to the MacArthur study bible, "the heart commonly refers to the mind as the centre of thinking and reason but also includes the emotions, the will, and thus, the whole inner being". Since your heart is the core of your being, we are commanded to use wisdom in everything that we allow to be part of who we are. And it means everything.

For example, you're wrestling with trust issues. You're weak and vulnerable. I don't think that God will command you to just go out there and trust everyone and give your heart to everyone. To apply wisdom in this case is to not trust your heart with people until you know that these people are trustworthy. This is guarding your heart so that the issues of your heart can be healed.

I think for most of us, we grew up memorizing certain verses in the bible, especially the popular ones. The danger to this is that we either take the verses out of context, or we don't search the scriptures for other verses that are related to a particular verse. We have to see all the verses in the bible that addresses a particular issue to get the Godly wisdom that we need. Perhaps we should guard our hearts from using the scriptures the way it's not meant to be.
