here's an example of one of my not so saintly prayers to God when I go through trying times. I've prayed this before "God, I know Your Word says to be thankful in all trials and afflictions, well I'm not thankful for this at all!! THIS SUCKS!!! Why does it have to be this way!?" Any of you ever pray prayers like this before or similar to this?

I can honestly say that I have never prayed like that. I do not consider that a prayer. I consider that a rant against God for the way life is. I do not suspect that He pays special attention to that except to be sad that the person saying the prayer is so angry and disconnected with the love that he/she should have in his/her heart always.

When I plea in frustration God always says, 'are you still trusting(in the blood of My Son?)' Circumstances(and His mercy)are transient in nature; His goodness and righteousness are not as our obedience should be. Seems to me your 'not so saintly prayers' aren't to Him but an excuse to wallowing in your own juices.

"Oh, God, Oh, God, Oh, God, Oh, God, Oh, God, Oh, God, Oh, God,!"

Psa 88:1 - 18 (YLT) 1 O Jehovah, God of my salvation, Daily I have cried, nightly before Thee, 2 My prayer cometh in before Thee, Incline Thine ear to my loud cry, 3 For my soul hath been full of evils, And my life hath come to Sheol.

4 I have been reckoned with those going down to the pit, I have been as a man without strength. 5 Among the dead—free, As pierced ones lying in the grave, Whom Thou hast not remembered any more, Yea, they by Thy hand have been cut off. 6 Thou hast put me in the lowest pit, In dark places, in depths.

7 Upon me hath Thy fury lain, And with all Thy breakers Thou hast afflicted. Selah. 8 Thou hast put mine acquaintance far from me, Thou hast made me an abomination to them, Shut up—I go not forth. 9 Mine eye hath grieved because of affliction, I called Thee, O Jehovah, all the day, I have spread out unto Thee my hands.

10 To the dead dost Thou do wonders? Do Rephaim rise? do they thank Thee? Selah. 11 Is Thy kindness recounted in the grave? Thy faithfulness in destruction? 12 Are Thy wonders known in the darkness? And Thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? 13 And I, unto Thee, O Jehovah, I have cried, And in the morning doth my prayer come before Thee.

14 Why, O Jehovah, castest Thou off my soul? Thou hidest Thy face from me. 15 I am afflicted, and expiring from youth, I have borne Thy terrors—I pine away. 16 Over me hath Thy wrath passed, Thy terrors have cut me off, 17 They have surrounded me as waters all the day, They have gone round against me together, 18 Thou hast put far from me lover and friend, Mine acquaintance is the place of darkness!

Actually, that's pretty saintly compared to some of the prayers i prayed about 20 years ago. one time i remember vividly, i went out in the middle of the San Joaquin Delta about 10 miles from any soul and just sat on top of a levee and ranted and raved for what seemed like hours but was actually only about 45 minutes. I was just livid. :-)

at the end of my prayer i screamed .. " What am i doing wrong? "

It was the only time i ever got a verbal response to a prayer. It was one word and this is what it sounded like ...

quote:

The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. Psalm 29:3-5

one word. and it was the most spot-on advice i ever got. ever.

the word was "ARROGANCE" of course.

I've had some perhaps, "unsaintly" prayers.

I consider them to be honest prayers. If I can't vent my earthly frustrations to the Big Guy, who can I vent to?

My prayers will always end with me remembering and saying something like "But God, I know you are in control, and I will remain faithful and trust in you. Your will be done in my life." or something along those lines.

I guess I just figure there's no use trying to pretend to be holy in front of the Holy of Holies, so I come to Him just as I am. . . a broken mess.

Read the psalms and you'll see just how very "ordinary" you and your prayer is! I say that in love. God is so good. He let real men with real problems and real passions write beautiful prayer songs sharing their heart with God and with us so that we could KNOW beyond any doubt that what He wants, is us, in all truthfullness.

He doesn't want us pretending or denying or looking pretty. God wants the real me, and sometimes the real me is angry, upset, feeling sorry for myself, etc, etc, etc!

Bless you, Knolt! The Lord bless you and keep you and make His face to upon you! Be truthfull with the Lord and with your brothers and sisters and find out the beauty of living as He intended! LL

I'm not sure I've prayed anything quite like that ... and I don't honestly believe that anger towards God (the "WHY??!!" with angry fists) will reap an answer. However, I have gone to God with a "WHY?" with a humble heart and tears and with a sincere desire to know - to understand - why something is so messed up in my life and what does He want me to learn from it and what does He want me to do about it.

We reap what we sow. Sometimes we don't realize we are sowing something that will reap such yuckiness. Sometimes we sowed things in the past - before we were saved - and it's now coming to fruition, and the fruit is very bitter. A complete waste. Yet, if we seek His face and His answers and follow His guidance, He will show us what to do with it. Sometimes the answer is a very gentle "Give it to Me and I will carry the burden for you."

I certainly think we can be real before God. However, I think showing respect for the Creator of the Universe is a good idea too. '

I tend to see Him as more of the High School Principlal than a buddy in homeroom class.

Not arguing ... just curious why you would be disappointed at how others choose to pray when they are angry or frustrated?

Ooooh, yeah! Many times. I was doing my best and things were falling apart and so was I. God, aren't You watching? Don't you hear my pleas? Where the *&%#@ are You?! <stamps foot>

I've been a Christian many years and I'm still a sinner (big surprise, eh?) and still trying to get God to do it my way. It's never worked. Or worse, I've tried to take over His job. Talk about being under-qualified!

quote:

ORIGINAL: 1love1God1wayI guess I just figure there's no use trying to pretend to be holy in front of the Holy of Holies, so I come to Him just as I am. . . a broken mess.

Yep. I think one of the bottlenecks of every person's Christian walk is that they have to realize they are a broken mess. If we trot along thinking we're doing God a favor by waving at Him as we toodle along our merry way, we haven't spent enough time in Scripture. We're sinners. Born spiritually dead and a slave to sin. Rescued by the blood of Christ and dragged (probably kicking and screaming) into the Kingdom of God. And fighting Lordship every step of the way. Sigh.

I think one of the things that proves God is God is that He can love us when we are such wrecks. That He sanctifies us when we deserve death and hell. Few of us are capable of doing that for others.

After all these years, it's finally dawning on me that God is good, I'm a sinner, and I can trust Him and shouldn't trust myself. So my prayers should be "What do You want me to think and do?" (the Bible gives instructions so I should read it) and "Thank You that You love us and are working things out for good." My heart can rejoice in faith because, even though I don't understand what's going on around me, the Great Conductor is leading us in the fugue that we'll get to hear some day, and it will be beautiful and perfect. All I have to do is spend the next five minutes doing what His Word says, and watch the show around me. And keep reading the Word so I don't forget (again).

When things go wrong we sometimes get angry with God. He can take it. After all, He took our anger on the Cross did He not?

But let's not make a habit of it. Let's stop and consider why "this sucks".

Is it the result of something we have done perhaps? Have we done something wrong and now we are blaming Him for the outcome?

When He doesn't answer our prayers we get angry that "He's not listening". Well, maybe He is and He is saying No or Not Yet.

Perhaps we should trust Him more when things "suck" and when we say "Thy will be done". And it means just that - and not "Thy will be done as long as it is what I want".

Don't worry about your not so saintly prayers. He knows your frustrations and He has already forgiven you.

I love the Lord, I respect Him, am in AWE of Him, He saved me, & set my feet upon a rock, put this love in my heart.....BUT, I don't think I have ever ever faked happy to God.

We can't blame God for any circumstance that we find ourselves in.
but we can cast our burden to Him (Psalm 56) God looks at our hearts.

Thank you Lord for loving me in spite of myself.

I'll tell you. From proud flesh. . .

At times in my life I have raged at God.

This is not something specifically that I am proud of - but I have learned that I can be angry and respectful.

I have told God if he was not going to change my marriage then he'd best kill one of us because I was done with everything.

You can be angry and sin not - anger is not a sin - the actions you do while angry can be sinful. There is a difference.

I have never prayed that way, and to be perfectly honest, have never questioned or raged anything God has done or allowed in my life. Because His ways and thoughts are higher than mine, I am limited in my understanding, and so am unable to determine what His purposes are in a particular trial or tribulation. I just trust Him because I know He loves me...and because He is God and I'm not.
