I too counted with my kids, in a tone that they knew I was serious! ONE, TWO! and if I got to three they received a spanking or some action from me. It worked great! It's been a while since I had to count! LOL My youngest is almost 17!

This won't work when they are young, but you will find that as they get older, they will still fight. And the fights will be over trivial things.
I have 2 boys, 14 and 8 and when they fight, I just yell up the stairs, "You better be nice to your brother because one day you might need a kidney", or I ask them "How are your kidneys?"
That usually quiets them down for a little while, anyway.
