I've thought about the Open Bible before. I also was thinking along the lines of the Thompson Bible or a Scofield.

My first NASB was an Open Bible version.

I once used the Scofield for a number of years. I don't recommend it because the notes are heavily weighed to his theology/eschatology.

I'm not sure who recommended the Open Bible in the KJV, but whoever did, thank you, I am really looking into that one.

My grandmother was a Primative Southern Baptist and all she allowed in her house was the KJV. This is all I've ever had in my home, too. Even my study bible is the KJV. She believed that the word of God can be "altered" with so many translations and in heart, the KJV was the only true translation.

Now my mother has probably 25 different versions and translations of the bible.

She and my grandmother rarely saw eye-to-eye....

Hi, Nomad. I also use the Stones with the NASB as my most regularly-studied English Bibles. I would like to try some other translations besides the NASB, but I'm an old coot, stuck in my ways, and I am basically just too lazy to try something new as my regularly studied Bible.

The only complaint I have with the Stones is that they translate "foreigner" to "proselyte," and that changes the meaning.

Obviously, the Stones and other Bibles have Isaiah 53. None I have ever heard of have left this or any other chapter out. In fact, FurGodWurLivin, if it were not for the integrity of the Jews, whom G-d chose as protectors of the Bible, you would not have your Bible at all -- none of it.

Not all rabbis are well ecudated, and apparently the one mentioned in your post was not. Many of the Jews who have become believers today are believers because they read and translated that chapter, finding that what they had been taught about it could not be true. I have met some of these myself.

I was reared on KJV and used it exclusively for years because the church I used to be in demanded it. There were a few words I struggled with then. I remember one was rereguard. One of the things that really amazed me was the number of words that had "obvious" meanings, but I later learned they were not so obvious at all -- they had changed meanings in time as words continue to do. Remember when the word we pronounce "fat" meant overweight?

Jordan, I quite using the Thompson years ago because I found it to be antisemetic. This puzzled me, but Ii stayed quiet about it, until I finally got the nerve to ask a bible scholar. He was kind of embarrassed that I asked, but he agreed that it is. Just an opinion. Some of the notes are real nice.

I know many like the Scofield KJV in fact both of my Pastors use it. Personally, though I have a Scofield, though in ESV, I rarely use it much I occasionally take it off the shelf and read some of the notes in it but for regular bible study when I use printed versions I prefer to not have any notes. And I am one of the few who does not write in any of my Bibles. For some reason I prefer to make notes on separate paper when I am doing a study. Sometimes I find if I dont have notes I will look at the passages without past notes and may tend to see something I was not looking for before. Of course with e-Sword which was a free download for a PC I have grown accustomed to being able to have some 20+ versions which I can choose with fast searches and I can have up to 4 in parallel as well as highlighting one verse and compare it with all translations I have. Much easier than having 20 bibles spread out on the bed or desk and having to open each to the verse.
BTW it also has some Greek versions and other languages available but as I only know American English I stick to those.
As to Jewish bibles does the Complete Jewish Bible by Stern count?

I read from many translations just to get different feels. When studying, I more often than not use the New American Standard Bible. When just reading for pleasure or what not, I'll read from a more thought-by-thought style translation, though, like the NIV, etc. I also read ESV and KJV.

I agree, in fact, I remember being disapointed with the use of "proselyte" myself when I saw that which is a clear bias translation of that word to fit the theology. Unfortunately this can be found in every translation. I was similarly disilusioned when I first realized that the KJV "Mercy seat upon the ark" (Ex 25:21) is a translation of the Hebrew "hacaporet al ha'aron" which simply means "the lid on the box" :-).

When I became aware that every translation is bias in one way or another I decided to learn Hebrew for myself. Siince then I have begun work on what I call the "Mechanical Translation" which almost eliminates any personal bias in the translation. I have published the book of Genesis and am now working on Exodus.

Oo-oo-oo! While you're at it, if you haven't already, translate Isaiah 53!

You sound ambitious. I wish I had time to do such things. We can all make time, as I am sure you have.

Sometimes names can/should be translated as their meaning rather than as a person.

Also, if you run a comparison of the name "Jesus," you'll probably get at least one more in the KJV than other translations because an instance in Acts that very obviously should have been translated Joshua (as Moses' replacement) instead of Jesus.

Hello All:

I noticed that in each post 'only' Christian Bibles are being used. Does anyone use Jewish translations? After all, the Hebrew language of the Old Testament is their language and I would think they would know it better than anyone. I personally have found Stone's Edition of the Tanakh (OT) to be very helpful.

I refer to Young's Literal Translation sometimes in study. Mostly I use NIV because it's readable. KJV is beautiful to read but is not the most accurate translation, IMHO. I just don't get the KJV-only people, but that's got it's own thread.

I did a search on www.biblegateway.com and the word "Jesus" appears in the KJV 942 times, while it appears in the NKJV 1,040 times.

MODERATOR'S NOTE :: ATTENTION PLEASE

Please take the discussion/comparisons of the KJV and the NKJV to the KJV Only thread, located HERE. Note that this thread is asking what Bible translation(s) you use; it's not asking for comparisons of NKJV vs. KJV.

Thanks!
