An 18 yo still living at home is still under his parents' authority. Many 18 yos haven't even graduated high school yet.

Yes. I agree.
An 18 year old is also regarded as an adult. S/he can be on the register of voters, and if s/he is deemed to have sufficiently mature views about George W. Bush / Hillary etc (or Stephen Harper in Canada) to be able to express them, I guess some would say that they might be generally deemed to be capable of knowing what they want to wear in their ears, as well.

It isn't about being capable to decide. It's about being respectful of the house rules...and they are in someone else's house.

I guess it's also about how far do house rules for minors need to be imposed on adults; I mean, a nephew or a cousin aged over 18, who happened to visit wouldnt usually be told to remove earrings, or else...

Yes, there is a difference, you are right.
I guess also that I mean that many parents by the age of 18 would kind of reckon, look, he's an adult now, and wants to pierce his ears, so what's the big deal.

yes, I guess some would....but if our house rule is NO EARRINGS, then that is our house rule...period. 18, 23, 37....it doesn't matter. If you are MY child and wanting to live under MY roof then you will follow that house rule. If you don't like it then you can choose to make your own house rules under your own roof.

yes, I guess some would....but if our house rule is NO EARRINGS, then that is our house rule...period. 18, 23, 37....it doesn't matter. when my kids grow up and have their own kids then they can make their own rules...and baring anything that would truly be harmful or abusive, I plan to keep my own opinions out of their lives. I would rather them BE in my life then feel like I was trying ti run their lives. God has called us to raise OUR kids this way for whatever reason He has...that does not mean others have to or that our kids have to follow the same rules when they grow up.

Nah, I wouldn't be surprised if my grandsons showed up at my house with a pierced ear. Nor would I have a problem with it. They're still my grandbabies after all.
Understanding??? about my daughter's tattoo. You mean as in "getting" her reason for having a tattoo? Not really...I think she's just following a fad right now. And, that's okay, too I guess considering she makes her own big girl decisions now.

Hi,
I haven't read all the posts, but the answer is, "No!". Never. And I do have an 18 yr. old son. I don't think he would ever pierce anything, he is very conservative.
I don't think earrings for men are masculine (unless you are a pirate ;)).

Fine, you're certainly entitled to your views.
Part of the question is also, I guess, if an adult (i.e., over 18) son did wear (an) earring(s), would he be excluded from the house?
Some ppl would say, yes. Others would think such a course of action would be rather extreme, and ignoring the fact that many men, including Christian ones, do happen to wear earrings.

I'm 17 and when I graduate and move out of the house I plan on getting two earrings in my left ear.

Well, my dad said that he would rip it out if I got one. So I have to wait until I move out. My mom said that she would be fine with it.

Moms are sometimes a bit more tolerant, aren't they? Maybe if she has a few earrings herself, it makes all the difference, right?
