Just for the sake of argument, let's assume that neither of us will ever have tobacco related health issues and will live to be 105 with all our faculties. Would you rather live the rest of your life and ministry without being addicted, a virtual slave, to nicotine? I got rid of the last bit of tobacco 698 days ago and the last of any nicotine 601 days ago. I can spend time with a friend, a relative, someone needing a friendly ear without any concern that I will need to get a nicotine fix. They have my full attention. A couple of years ago, that attention would begin to wane after 30-45 minutes and begin to disappear within an hour. I can thoroughly enjoy being at church for several hours without wanting a hit of my old drug of choice. I can plan and enjoy a trip or an event without taking nicotine into the equation at all. Jesus paid to set me free. How can I effectively share that message while being enslaved by a drug that has no medical benefit whatsoever? This freedom is worth that relatively brief period of extreme discomfort I had to endure for a few days. I will remember the cost of that freedom and I will also remember and continue to share that Jesus was with me each minute, hour, and day of the journey back to freedom.
