Our daughter is graduating high school next month and we are trying to decide on a graduation gift for her. I was wondering what other parents do (for a gift) for their children when they graduate. I would love to hear ideas.

My parents bought a nice set of luggage for me when I graduated from high school because I was going to college pretty far away from home. Eleven years later, I'm still using the luggage! I think they felt a little bad about giving it, almost as if gifting me with luggage was symbolizing that they wanted me to leave (LOL), but I needed it and certainly couldn't afford a quality set on my own. For college graduation, they gave me a digital camera, and for seminary graduation, they gave me a very nice diamond necklace. Both were very appropriate and meaningful at each stage in my life.

I'm not sure what we'll eventually do for our daughters, but my parents' gifts were always so thoughtful and helpful as I passed into each new phase in my life. I want to do something similar for my girls.

My parents bought me an expensive (for the quality), beautiful Thompson Chain reference Bible that I treasure and am still using after 9 years.

For my high school graduation I was sent to Europe to visit family and friends. For my college graduation, I got money (which was sorely needed).

We were going to buy our daughter a laptop but no longer need. Her grandmother just passed away and had a brand new laptop and my daughter will use that.

I am at a loss now what to get her really. We will probably just give her money now, or other things to be used when she leaves for college this Fall. We are also taking a family vacation where she will choose, within reason, where we will go.

We gave our oldest daughter a car for graduation (coincided with her 18th birthday) and we gave our second daughter money.

We were planning on getting her a laptop, but not really sure if she "needs" one and maybe there is something else she could better use. She is going to be attending our local community college in the fall, so she won't be moving out.

If she is staying home, how about a room redecorate?
You could (if it's something you and her are interested in) make her bedroom into a "college dorm".
Just an idea.

Redecorating her room is a great idea. Her room is in "need" of an update. We're going to have to talk with her to see what she would really want. Sometimes our ideas aren't always what they really want.

A Bible and a CD that draws interest at a better rate than just putting money in their savings account.

I got money . . . of which I immediately handed back to my mother because I owed her money in the first place. . .

My daughter rarely asked for things even for gift occasions such as birthdays and Christmas. For graduation she finally asked for an ipod which we got her. She got a total of about $600 in cash. She saved most of it after spending around $200 to get a digital camera.

I made my daughter a scrapbook with a page for every year of her life.

My parents paid for me to fly to West Africa, where I stayed with my (missionary) grandparents for a year. It was the perfect graduation gift for me [:)]
I would like to pay for such an experience for our kids when they're ready to graduate. If they're anything like their father they'll have their own laptops and most electronics long before they graduate from high school[8D] And most "things" we want our kids to buy for themselves anyway.
