You are driving along a country road, and you see another car coming towards you on the same road. As the car gets nearer, you can see the driver. Just as the car is about to pass you, the driver in the other vehicle lifts their hand as they pass. You return the greeting.

Is this a normal scenario for you? Do you wave at other drivers as they pass? Do you initiate the wave, or only wave if they waved first?

It doesn't happen here I'd be in shock. When we gesture at other drivers its not to be friendly [&:]

First off, there are no country roads here. The large majority of my driving is done at 60+ mph. I never wave. I rarely see what other drivers are doing as I'm busy watching the road.

ETA: I do occasionally wave one finger. [8D]

Like Bill, there are no country roads.

I don't wave at someone just to wave, but I'll wave if I know the person.

And I wave if I let someone into my lane or vice versa.

_MavericK_ -> RE: Driving question: Do you wave at other drivers? (4/22/2008 3:06:40 PM)

It depends. I wave if someone lets me into a lane or if I let someone into a lane, if I know them, or if i see someone else with a beetle. Respect the beetle ettiquette!

I wonder if it's a midwest thing or a rural thing? You can't obviously do this in the city, or you'd be constantly waving. It only works if you only see another car every ten minutes or so. [:)]

I live in a mountanous/rural area. We wave quite often. Us guys in pickup trucks almost always wave at each other.

_Cinderella_ -> RE: Driving question: Do you wave at other drivers? (4/23/2008 6:10:51 AM)

Only if I see someone I know... which is almost never.

Hello All:

Very interesting Topic, thank you Consecrated for starting it. After living most of my life in the country I have learned "wave" edicate for rural areas. If you pass by a car or pickup with someone you know you of course wave. Generally speaking, you don't usually wave from a car, or to cars, only if you're in a pickup or tractor do you wave, however there are some exceptions :-). If you pass by a car with someone you don't know driving you usually don't wave unless they do first. If you pass by a pickup, both will generally raise one or two fingers without removing the hand from the steering wheel. If on your return trip you pass the same truck you lift your whole hand from wheel leaving the heel of your hand on the wheel. If you pass a tractor in the field you do a complete wave with the hand off the wheel. If you pass by someone on a regular basis but don't know them you do a complete wave with the hand off the wheel. If ever in doubt just do the one or two finger thing :-).

On a related topic, you see three cowboys in a pickup truck, which one is the smartest?

The one in the middle, the one on the left has to do all the driving and the one on the right has to get out all the time to open the gates and the one in the middle gets to relax and enjoy the drive :-).

Grace-N-Mercy -> RE: Driving question: Do you wave at other drivers? (4/23/2008 8:03:22 AM)

We have some country roads here and, yes, I wave at people occasionally.

What's really interesting, though, is to watch motorcyclists. I got behind a motorcycle on my way to church a few times. Around here, Sunday morning drives are very common for bikers (and yes, sometimes they're on their way to church). I noticed that every time another motorcycle would pass, they'd all wave at each other. That was cool -- it just seems they're a more friendly bunch than us car/truck drivers. [&:]

Jeff, great post! [:D] Around here, I don't think there's any rules of ettiquette about waving--people wave from all sorts of vehicles, even cars. [:)] I've noticed that if the person is older or a farmer they are more likely to wave, though. Younger people rarely wave, and I've seldom had a woman wave at me.

garsyt -> RE: Driving question: Do you wave at other drivers? (4/23/2008 10:32:49 AM)

I wave but only if I know the person. Considering the most driving I do is between home and school I tend to do a lot of waving. In town tho not so much.

well, for me it's just part of southern living

we wave from our house to the cars passing by there, too

we also wave from our cars to people walking down the street

it's just good manners down here[sm=icon_smile_super.gif]

This was my favorite part of riding with my grandaddy to the ranch whre he was a foreman. I loved jumping out of the truck to open the gates. It meant I wasn't no little kid any more.

That's true down here as well. And complete strangers will strike a conversation in checkout lines, in elevators, or most anyplace two or more people gather.

There are complete strangers here who strike up conversations. I'm just not always wanting to have those conversations with them.....

stampinlady -> RE: Driving question: Do you wave at other drivers? (4/23/2008 9:44:58 PM)

Hee hee, I have waved at others thinking I know them because they're in the same kind of car and usually it's not the person I know.[:)]

Seems to me like it's the right thing to do. Why would we not wave?

JordanW -> RE: Driving question: Do you wave at other drivers? (4/23/2008 11:02:35 PM)

A driver has never waived at me unless it's for me to go first at a stop sign.

Chills -> RE: Driving question: Do you wave at other drivers? (4/24/2008 12:33:08 AM)

I usually wave a people if they wave back. When i go to Texas it is very common for people to wave. Truly everyone waves at you as you are driving along. Not quite as much where I am from ( though farmers and ranchers do it a lot). I think it is great, though.

For some reason, this reminded me of when I was a kid... we went for Sunday afternoon drives back then and once we were driving on some back roads. Dad thought it would be funny if we all began waving wildly at the next car that drove by. So when the next car drobe by, all four of us started waving... watching their reactions as they try to figure out who we were and why we were waving was fun.

kohls356 -> RE: Driving question: Do you wave at other drivers? (4/24/2008 9:39:55 AM)

I live in a suburban area and drivers do not wave at each other unless you know them. Most of the time though we aren't really paying attention to the people in other cars.

Now when I visit my sister who lives in a very rural area people seem to wave at everyone. When we first drove to her house I couldn't figure out why everyone was waving at us, because we certainly didn't know any of them. I mentionded it to her and she said that is just what people do there.
