Evangel70 -> What is John McCain hiding? (4/22/2008 1:56:04 PM)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. John McCain is considered one of the wealthiest members of Congress, but you wouldn't know it by looking at tax returns released Friday by his presidential campaign.

Out of 535 members of Congress, Roll Call newspaper last year ranked McCain the ninth richest.

In 2007, McCain's total income was $405,409; his taxable income was $258,800; he paid $188,660 in taxes.

The campaign did not release tax returns for McCain's wife, Cindy, heiress to a fortune from her father's beer distribution company, Hensley and Company, for which she now serves as chairman.

According to last year's Senate financial disclosure form, the McCains have assets of at least $36.5 million. Some estimates put her worth at $100 million.

Before marrying 27 years ago, the McCains signed a prenuptial agreement to keep their finances separate and they file their taxes separately.

Rest of story here

Given how much the Republican party pressed Mrs. Kerry to release her tax returns during the 2004 Presidential campaign, should Mrs. McCain also be pressed just as strongly to release her returns?

Do you believe the McCains are hiding something by NOT releasing Mrs. McCain's taxes while calling for "transparency" from the democrats?

The McCains have a prenup?!?[sm=icon_smile_yikes.gif]

No, hot hiding anything.

Just putting it off until the general election.

To get the demokrats screaming, hollering, and demanding for weeks on end; then comes the disclosure with nothing untowars in that disclosure

He just married the unlimate trifecta; a nice looking, nice person and absolutley loaded wife.

Thanks

Where did "Roll Call" newspaper get their information?

His taxable income was only 258K and his tax bill was 188K?

Something is off here to me. I don't trust what was posted.

Yeah she's been "absolutely loaded" alright.

From a March 2008 CNN article:

"Everyone knows Cindy McCain, the heiress wife of John McCain, was addicted to pain pills.... Cindy McCain wasn't just addicted to pain pills. She was investigated federally for stealing pain pills from a medical charity she headed and for having prescriptions filled in the names of the charity's employees. She admitted it. One of the doctors who wrote the prescriptions for her lost his license........Mrs. McCain, through her lawyers, was able to get federal prosecutors to let her enter a diversion program and avoid jail."

If Obama's wife had done that we'd never hear the end of it. There'd be a thread 20 pages long with everyone chiming in to register their disgust and outrage.

And would you have a problem with that?

inthysite -> RE: What is John McCain hiding? (4/22/2008 4:18:42 PM)

According to the Washington Post:

Campaign officials said the decision not to release Cindy McCain's returns was based, in part, on the precedent set by the 2004 Democratic nominee, Sen. John Kerry, whom they said did not share details of his wife's fortune.

John McCain Releases Tax Returns

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Since Mrs. Kerry never fully disclosed her taxes but only a summary of the first two pages, information that was already known, they why should Mrs. McCain release hers?

Problem with what exactly? A thread 20 pages long, or Obama's wife abusing her position of power to fund her pill addiction as McCain's wife did?

The first one, not really. Obviously double standards exist on both sides of the aisle, that's the sad nature of politics. This is a primarily conservative forum, so I shouldn't be so surprised when a greater amount of scrutiny, criticism, and vitriol are directed at the democrats over the republicans. If Obama's wife had done this, though, I guarantee you it would be all over the media and all over these forums.

In terms of McCain's wife's actions themselves, I personally wouldn't fault him much for them. Addiction is a personal issue, so if his wife is a former pill addict I don't think it affects his ability to serve as president. It is kind of disturbing that she broke the law and got off with a lighter sentence, but such is usually the case for the wealthy, so I doubt there was anything underhanded going on there.

This is a good example of a mutual double standard that exists on both sides of the aisle.

Republicans are arguing that Mrs McCain doesn't have to release her taxes because John Kerry's wife didn't.

Democrats are arguing that she should because Republicans argued in the past that John Kerry's wife should.

No one really has the upper hand when it comes to this sort of double standard. It makes fools out of both sides.

Just checking to see how consistent you are. Flame away.

There is no double standard on this point, on the pill abuse probably, but with this, no.

Yes the Republicans demanded that she fully disclose her tax returns, but she refused, opting to only release a summary of what was already known. Had she released hers then I would say yes, but she didn't so now the Republicans, McCain specifically, are just following the precedent that the Democrats set.

If anything the double standard is on the Democrats. Why are they complaining about it now when they didn't back in 2004?

inthysite -> RE: What is John McCain hiding? (4/22/2008 5:29:03 PM)

Oh, and in regards to the pill issue I will give her credit for at least admitting it instead of trying to spin it or wiggle out of it. And she served her time in a diversion center, so she paid for her crime.

Is this an acceptable topic to bring up against John McCain, sure. Does it hurt McCain, probably not since like I said, she admitted it and did her time.

That is another thing I like about McCain, at least he is willing to admit when he makes mistakes instead of trying to cover it up.

Yes, but was the crime admitted before, or after the feds investigated her and she got caught? I guess you admire Bill Clinton too for "admitting" his affair with Monica?

Bill never admitted his affair, instead he questioned the definition of 'is'. I don't know too many people who admit to a crime they've committed before they get caught, but I see people all the time who deny they did anything wrong or try to spin it after they get caught, both on the Republican side as well as the Democrat side as well as outside of politics.

And as an aside have you noticed that when a Democrat is caught committing a crime the media will barely if ever mention that they are a Democrat. But let a Republican get caught and it's all over the place what party they are affiliated with. Talk about your double standards.

No. That's a double standard. Republicans wanted her to release her tax forms. Just because she refused to do this doesn't negate the fact that they argued then that she should have to release them.

If they believe that the wife of a presidential nominee should release her tax forms, as they did when Kerry was running, then if they claim that McCain's wife shouldn't have to, it's a double standard -regardless of what Mrs Kerry did.

Yes, this also is a double standard.

As I said, neither side is innocent on this issue.

In open primaries, dems made the choice for the reps. Also, Romney's Mormon faith was used against him.
