gmc4Jesus -> Jesus is also a Role Model (4/23/2008 2:24:45 PM)

I have enjoyed investing over twelve years specifically studying and applying the life and teachings of Jesus as a model for how we should live. While I realize that my salvation is totally based on who He is and what He did on the cross for my sins, I also have come to observe that Jesus has experienced every situation that I have to deal with and has handled that temptation without sinning. Therefore, I am doing what I can to help others see Jesus as a role model.

If Jesus is a role model as well as Savior, then it would behove us to spend time studying His life and teachings so that we may become more intimately acquainted and influenced by His life. In John 13:15, Jesus cites Himself as a role model.

The way we become like Him is to study His life and teachings. It won't happen overnight, but if we continue to study His life, over time, we will grow to be influenced by His example and He will truly change our lives for the better.

You beat me to it. On another thread the idea of complete sanctification was brought up. Yeshua(Jesus) tells us, (Mt 5:48) "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Is this possible this side of paradise?

Does the word translated "perfect" mean "without flaw or sin" or does it mean "mature"? Your answer might be in understanding what the word means in today's English.

Okay, what was Jesus talking about in that verse? He was talking about the disciples washing each other's feet as He did theirs.

The weakness of the whole "What would Jesus Do?" philosophy is that... well... we aren't Jesus, God the Son incarnate.

The correct question is to ask ourself, "What Would Jesus Have Me Do?"

Jesus is our role model. And what Jesus showed us by the life that He lived in the body, was a life lived in total dependence upon God the Father.

This is the same relationship that Jesus desires to now have with us. Where we live in total dependence upon Him.

I feel this is one of the most neglected, underappreciated and generally misunderstood aspects of the Incarnation. Thanks for the reminder, gmc4!

No, I would say that the way we become like Christ is by sanctifying grace. When we have His perfect Love in our entire being, then we will grow in grace to be more Christ-like by studying and applying His lifestyle and teachings to our life.

The correct question is to ask ourself, "What Would Jesus Have Me Do?"
Better yet - what will we allow Jesus to do through us?

I have been doing the same for almost 10 years now, myself, and it truly is life-changing! Plus one falls more and more in love with Him[:)]

I say it is both[;)] By beholding Him we are changed:

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 3:18

I also do believe it is by His sanctifying grace:

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it

1Thess. 5:23-24

I agree with drmark that it is Christ living His life through us.

This is my very, very favorite topic[:D]

I think if we really intend to DO whatever it is that Jesus would have me do by the indwelling Holy Spirit, the questions are essentially the same. IOW, if He is within me and I submit to what He'd have me do, then He is doing it through my submitted heart, mind, and soul.

I agree. I get very tired of people thinking we should be puppets on a string

Do you really think Jesus was saying "Be mature, therefore, as your heavenly Father is mature?

If you do a word study on perfect in that verse, it does mean "mature".

Bingo!

We are not to be akin to immature people who are influenced (swug to and fro) with any and every teaching, emotion, experience.

How often do you totally submit? 50%? 75%? 99%?

So all your teaching is perfect? There is absolutely no flaw in anything you have declared to be true about God or scripture? If I were to look through the posts on this board, every single post would be a perfect reflection of truth, because you were totally submitted to God when making the post?

SonInMe1 -> RE: Jesus is also a Role Model (4/24/2008 9:08:30 PM)

How can Jesus be a role model, if we are perfect?

You guys really don't get this "Christian perfection" concept, do you! Why not do a little study of Wesleyan/Holiness doctrine and then maybe we can have a reasoned conversation. I will get you STARTED HERE.

SonInMe1 -> RE: Jesus is also a Role Model (4/25/2008 7:39:41 AM)

Maybe..we are not ignorant. Maybe...we disagree.
