USB fell out (Full Version)

Last night when my daughter was unplugging something from the front of our computer's USB port, the USB port fell out, and dropped inside our computer. Is this something we can easily repair ourselves by opening up the computer?

Depends on how it's held in place

Its probably plastic and they have little clips that fit inside the case that are easy to break.

Or you might need a soldering gun . You should have usb ports on the back that you can use in the meantime.

Thanks. When my daughter tried using the back usb for the mouse, it didn't work. This morning I put on one of those adapter things (SP1?) to our mouse and it works now. My husband wants my daughter to fix it today, and she was thinking of using tape. [8D]

I agree, tape won't work, though she fixed the cord that goes into our modem with tape. [:D]

Well, it depends on how much came off. If it came off the board, you'd need someone experienced, probably a professional to get it back on. If a card fell off, or something of that ilk, just putting it back into place should work. But my guess is that just the connector fell off, right? Which takes a lot of force. To weaken it enough to fall out from unplugging, you'd have had to hit plug in with a hammer or bashed it against the wall first; these things are pretty sturdy.

Well, we opened up our computer and found we still couldn't access the usb. It was behind a metal blocked off area that would've involved taking the computer much more "apart". From carefully looking through the front, it looked like two white plastic things held the usb in place, and it looked like they were chipped. So my daughter used some tweezers to pick up the usb plug and held it while she plugged in an extender cord, so that's what we are using now.

I don't think anyone has been overly rough with that part of our computer, but our computer is far from new. Can't it just wear out with time?

Yes it could wear out, but they use the cheapest parts in computers. We have one of the pcs here at work do the same thing and it was new so the warranty tech fixed it.

If you have an unused 3.5’ drive bay (Floppy) or 5.25” drive bay (CD) then you can easily install new USB ports with one of the products below.

If your computer does not have memory card readers then the first one would add that functionality. It has one internal connector so all you would do is find where the loose USB port is plugged into the motherboard and plug the new one in its place.

The 4 port model requires extra power so it uses the same type of power plug that a floppy drive uses. Computer power supplies almost always have extra plugs so that should not be a problem.

If you do not have empty drive bays there is an expansion card type that plugs into a PCI slot like a modem or sound card. There are no internal wires to connect and the ports will be in the back of the computer.

It can, but I have 98's that can withstand abuse still, so unless you've been rough with it, this is not something that should happen.
