The sock monster sneaks in when you're not looking and removes them from the dryer.

I find many behind/under my son's bed. A few fall behind or between the washer/dryer.

I tie my socks together with dental floss. That way they stay together.

I use these and laundry bags. I don't tumble dry socks and it's easier putting them in laundry bags before I put them in the washer.

agapatos I used to use those. But some socks (if they are think) simply will not go through them. I was recommended by a podiatrist to use thick socks. Since I was using the same kind all of the time, I could not tell some of the old ones and new ones apart. Therefore, some of them would get unequal wear and usage.

I've got lots of similar socks too and used the sockies to avoid the unequal wear ~ mine have thicker feet but the calf part is not so thick, so they worked for me.

I don't know! Every couple months I buy a new package of socks for the kids. Otherwise, they'd be out of socks. I wear sports socks for running. These get washed with my running stuff and get line dried. Somehow, all the sudden, I can't find any socks!

The washer and dryer like the taste of socks so eat them pretty often.

If you fill your washer too full, the socks can get out of the tub and get down in between the outside of the tub and the inside of the washer.

I saw a Far Side cartoon where a dryer after years of missing socks tries to make its excape!

ORIGINAL: raspberry331 Good question. I think my washer eats them. :) I was sure this was the problem. My husband took the washer apart and showed me that there were no socks lurking anywhere in the parts. Then he put it back together. He did not take it apart to show me this. There was a problem with the washer he was fixing, however, he wanted to make sure I knew it wasn't the washing machine, since that had been my claim for years. Now I have no new theory as they are not between, under or behind the washer or dryer. I've checked that too.

Somehow I think that they get sucked out into the drain when the machine is emptying the water, however that is only just a theory.

I think the Australians and New Zealand people come up through American and British drain systems and steal them.

I don't think they are going down the drain and besides my husband told me that's not it. He knows about these kinds of things, so I usually believe him. Our socks are not in the drying hose or vent. I have checked there as well. Actually that was another place my husband showed me. This whole lost socks thing has bothered me a lot. I have ranted about it enough that my husband decided to show me that my theories were incorrect. He believes that socks do not get lost in the laundry, but they get lost in the yard, the van, between the dresser and the wall, etc. I think he's right, except that sometimes lose my socks in the wash and I never find them stuffed behind anything (and I look), however, he has all his socks. I rarely lose one of the pair of his socks. Go figure.

The cow theory never came up. We don't have cows close enough to where we live. I'll check with my husband, but he would probably take my temperature to make sure I'm not ill to consider that as a possibility.
