I was going to list many things that I have read and heard concerning the reason for my title but I am curious if Christians are apathetic or truly aware of what is going on right now in this nation and I want you to share what you know and believe.

So, what are some things going on in this nation that has gotten your attention?

Do you believe that there are darker days ahead or nothing to worry about?

In your opinion, what do you believe is our Nation's biggest problem and what do you believe is the remedy?

Has this year been business as usual for you and your family or do you find yourself needing to form a strategy plan?

Here's a strategy plan: TRUST IN GOD.

Wherever you turn these days (including here in the UK) there's bad news and despair. If you and I cultivate Hope instead there will be plenty to rejoice about.

The fearmongering. The sky is falling chicken little mentalitites I thought were gone forever after the 70's.

There are always things to worry about. It depends if they are made into idols or not. Bad times will always come. Its the fallen nature of this world.

Nations are made up of people. People need God above all else.

I believe satan has attacked our family above all else. A mom and dad and kids.

Yes, I do think the US is in big trouble. I think it is due to our turning away from God over the last 50 years or so. Abortion, "free sex", gay and other abnormal lifestyles, taking prayer out of school, trying to take God's name out of everything, ect, ect.

And yet people refuse to turn to God, but just want to go on with the "if it feels good, do it" lifestyle.

This nation was founded on God's truths, and as a nation we have have moved so far away from Him.

But there are bad things going on all over the world. God is still in control and always will be. So we just have to trust in Him. What will happen with this nation I don't know, but I am at peace regardless because His will, will be done.

Yep, the U.S. and the entire world is in big trouble, but didn't the Lord promise it would be so? However, this is not my home...I'm only passing through, so I'm not worried. I'm just journeying to my ultimate destination where there will be no more pain, no more tears, no more suffering...I keep my eye on the prize, not on this world.

33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." -John 16

As long as people believe lies and would rather promote lies as truth we are headed down the downward spiral. One lie that is permeating our society is relatism -- there are no absolutes.

Try telling there are no absolute right and wrongs to family of murder victims. When right and wrong are turned upside-down in a society and it fails to protect it's weakest -- it is in decline.

Everyone is probably expecting some sort of spiritual answer, like church attendence is down or mandatory school prayer has been abolished, but I think that we really have to be concerned about some very real practical issues. One of the main ones that comes to my mind is monetary. Millions of baby boomers are approaching retirement with no pensions and inadequate savings. Money to fund medicare and social security is drying up. Our roads and bridges are crumbling. We are spending billions of dollars in Iraq with no end in sight. Energy prices will probably keep rising. We have a huge national debt which keeps growing. As a nation, we have not been good stewards of our material wealth.

And what? God is going to stop supplying my needs because the U.S. government/SS is bankrupt? Not my God...He's not bankrupt! He is limited by nothing and will continue to provide for me even if everything crumbles on this earth!

I walked in the front door at work this week and saw a friend who was talking to the head of security and as we chatted he dropped a bomb.

From out of nowhere he said that he was ready to go on a church mission trip, he needed a break, he got home the previous night and the kids were climbing the walls and he motioned with his hand how he went into whipping mode with a belt.

What does this have to do with this thread? Everything!

The biggest problem and the biggest danger in this nation is the minds and hearts of men and this does not exclude Christians.

I can handle the affects of mother nature. I expect recession and inflation. I can prepare for some of these things to a degree. However, I cannot predict what the heads of my company may be doing or what a disturbed kid at my childs' highschool may be planning.

I live near what used to be Worldcom and everytime I see that beautiful building, I still cannot believe what happened. Bernie Ebbers could have changed it all. It was a sign of things to come.

The future of this nation began a course some years ago with good men as leaders and with good intentions. It changed and it is apparent that the lusts of men and the denial of God are now their choices and if you do not think that these things can touch you, just wait.

I know I sound like a naysayer but you do not step into a dark future without a torch. This torch is not Oprah!

Very little. God tells us that people are going to be more and more self absorbed and that will be reflected in every aspect of our lives. And it is true.

Do you believe that there are darker days ahead or nothing to worry about?

I believe there are darker days ahead but nothing to worry about. God has it all under control. Things aren't falling to pieces. Things are falling into place. And soon Jesus will return. Hallelujah!

In your opinion, what do you believe is our Nation's biggest problem and what do you believe is the remedy?

Our nation's biggest problems is man's biggest problem---self reliance rather than God trust/reliance. Jesus is the only answer and some day every knee will bow before Him.

Has this year been business as usual for you and your family or do you find yourself needing to form a strategy plan?

No strategy plan here. Just follow Jesus. He knows the way and we'll be walking with Him into the future, whatever it holds.

This topic reminded me of Hebrews chapter 12 toward the end. The things that can be shaken up, will be shaken up. The things that cannot be shaken, will not be shaken (meaning the kingdom of God). Therefore we should give thanks to God, since we are part of those who cannot be shaken. Our God is a consuming fire. He is going about His business of shaking out that which needs to be shook out, and preserving the part that is unshakable.

Please excuse my paraphrase.

To go back to the OP I think the worst problem is abortion. I think the blood of innocents cry out to God and there is coming a time when He will avenge them.

This is exactly the response that I suspected my post would generate, and what I am going to say next will probably anger a lot of people.

I don't believe that "So what if my country is in trouble, what matters is that God will supply MY needs is an appropriate Christian response. While we are alive, we are still citizens of this planet and this country, and I think that we have a responsibility to use our God-given gifts to address the problems of the world in which we live. As the old cliche says, we shouldn't be so heavenly minded that we're no earthly good.

Walker, I began to post last night after you posted the OP. I cancelled twice. I now wish I would have posted what I began to post. Being a Christian forum, the text book answers are sure to fill responses to the OP. There are also many signs we can point to with the trouble in our economy as well as how we seem to be becoming more and more morally bankrupt. Yet, I had a sense you were getting at something else all together.

quote:

The biggest problem and the biggest danger in this nation is the minds and hearts of men and this does not exclude Christians.

It's so easy to point to the moral failures in others. Our media saturated culture makes all the easier and then we get into the sin of comparisonitis. IN doing this, we dismiss our own sins as minor things that don't really hinder our walk with Christ. I often find myself on these forums pointing to things I've seen that are spiritually damaging and trying to get others to think about things differently. Yet, I think I often fail to communicate that I have to keep myself in check and constantly evaluate self with scripture as the measuring rod.

We now live in a world where the majority of our relationships are superficial. We don't have true "friends" who are willing to explore under the mask with us and allow us under their mask. Especially for us men. We all need a "Ranger buddy" who knows us and will not be afraid to ask us how we're really doing. We live by the standards of our culture rather than the commandments of Christ. We respect each other's privacy as opposed to loving our neighbor just as Christ loves us.

After five years of working with sex offenders, sitting in on treatment sessions and monitoring these men (and women) in the community, it occurred to me that, as a society, we no longer know each other as we like to think we do. I look at the fall of Ted Haggard and see that he was allowed to put himself in a position where he may have had close friends, but no one close enough to counsel him away from his moral fall.

I don't see us getting any closer to each other. If we can't love our neighbor, how can we say we love Christ? We'd rather retreat from our pews and go home to our comfortable living rooms in front of our TV's than to talk with someone in our family about what's really on their heart. And, as I said, this hits home (my home) as I sit and write this.

Doesn't anger me a bit, however, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

My God and His Word NEVER changes...you can count on it. His promises to His children remain true no matter what happens in this world.

17 "Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls-- 18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills." Habakkuk 3

Probably no simple 'sin' or event rather a gradual lessening and weakening in corporate resolve lead to the church's apathy.(Remember the frog in the bowl of water?) God can tolerate a lot of 'stuff' as long as the missionary message is being proclaimed. North America, primary the US and Canada, is still the the largest 'sender'(90%)of charity/service and the gospel, even the missionaries coming to North America are largely coming to the immigrate population and are funded by North American churches and organizations. As far as the 'reasons' probably we don't have to look very far away from our families, neighbors and friends. After all, like politics, all start at home and radiate out to become a consensus.

Men are not learning anything as we all witness the consequences of poor choices and sinful actions.

I hear promises about how things will be different the "next time it happens". The next big storm and the next 9/11... what about now?

Our local cities are trying to figure out how to raise money to cover costs and you can bet this applies to businesses and institutions.

Mass immigration into this country, hospitals full of patients who cannot pay, drug costs over the top, mulititudes of families losing their homes, and businesses around for decades going belly-up.

Our kids are clueless about the future that we have prepared for them. If I were a kid, I wouldn't want to know either.

I just needed to address this part of your post, lest you believe I'm just sitting on my big, fat hiney doing nothing while expecting everything from God...I've been in f.t. ministry since 1989.

If anyone is to blame it is the church for not equiping her members to be salt/light in a fallen world. For teaching to develop a Christian worldview. For teaching that all of her members are to use their talents and resources in building the Kingdom. Nations and come and gone but God's word remains forever.

Can you hear the NOISE?

It's because of abortions. Free sex. Inflation. Immigration. Lack of respect. Stopping prayers in schools etc... etc... etc...

Whilst I sympathise with all those pointing fingers at what's wrong with this world; (it's not just the US or here in the UK, but throughout the world); let me ask you all good Christians a question:

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

It's pointless quoting the Bible and spreading doom and gloom. God is asking you for action now. He's allowed the devil free rein for a while and God is waiting to see what you'll do.

I suggest: First go to my post at the top of this page and Trust in God.

Second: Pray about it. If each one reading this thread prays about the situation earnestly God will listen and He will respond to our pleas for help.

Third: Be a good example to others by the way you live. Encourage others, help others, do one good turn a day - just for the heck of it.

Forgive me for preaching. My life is not and has not been perfect. But I tell you something: there's always someone worse off than me. And I thank God that I am not that worse off myself.

So let's pray together and spread some Hope around.

God bless you all.

I don't think anyone is saying don't do all you can to help. Just that they won't worry and stress over it. We need to keep our eyes on the Lord.
