Yes! I love both books and Piercing the Darkness is like my favorite book ever. I just got through reading it and I was quite stunned to see such a parallel between the demonic teachings in Piercing the Darkness and this stuff Oprah is promoting with this "New Earth" book....you know about "inner consciousness" and trancing... Did anyone else catch that?

Frank Peretti was one of my favorite authors back in fourth grade. The Cooper Kids books are still pretty fun to read. Well, since I liked his kids books, when I got a little older I read all the Frank Peretti stuff I could get my hands on for a while, and I would say it's usually fun and exciting, but scary. I read The Oath two or three times, because I ran across it again and couldn't remember what was in it. The Hangman's Curse, one sequel to that that I don't remember the name of, This Present Darkness, and Piercing the Darkness I have read once each and don't really remember very well. I would say they are good for entertainment, but I didn't personally get much else out of them. House, which is by Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker, really freaked me out.

Great book! It was my intro into Peretti-world. Just what I was looking for: mysterious, eerie stuff, with good messages and none of the vulgarity. I first checked it out of my church's library and loved it so much had to go get my own copy (along with Piercing the Darkness).

I read The Oath too - great book. I really like his books. I don't get to read novels much anymore, as I seem to have less and less time these days. Bummer too...

There is much teaching in the Bible that centers on spiritual warfare and the reality of the demonic realm - see Ephesians 6:10-18, and then read through the life & ministry of Jesus in the four Gospels, and the book of Acts... it's true that Peretti took some artistic license in portraying the spiritual warfare between the angels and demons, but there are several examples of it in the Bible (see Daniel chapter 10). There's more to this life than meets the eye!

EDIT:

p.s. Oh, thought I should add... This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness were two of the first Christian books I read after getting saved, and it opened my eyes to the reality of the power of prayer, and really boosted my prayer life. Great books - I couldn't put them down - real page turners!

I loved these two books! And reading this thread makes me want to read them again. I agree with the poster who said The Oath wasn't quite as good, but Prophet (I think that was the title; it's been a long time since I've read it and nobody else has mentioned it yet) and Visitation were both excellent. I also listened to a book on cd by him that was good. I don't remember the title but it was about a woman who was captured by a bigfoot creature. That summary sounds like it would be kind of corny, but it really was good. Frank Peretti is an awesome writer!

I think my favorite part (or at least for some reason I remember it best after all the years since I read it) of This Present Darkness was a scene where two angels were standing in a church where a real hypocrite--an unbeliever who pretended to be a Christian--had just prayed. One angel turns to the other one and says, "Are you getting any strength?" to which the other angel replies, "Why? Is someone else going to pray?" I don't know if the concept of angels drawing strength from the prayers of Christians is actually biblical, but it doesn't contradict scripture, and it made for some incredible storytelling.

Yeah, when I first read the book I was going to a charasmatic church, so that stuff didn't seem too weird. And now that I am no longer a charsmatic, it still doesn't seem that weird to me.

Just keep in mind that it is located in the Christian fiction section for a reason.

That doesn't mean it's not a good read, but it does mean it's fiction and not the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I wouldn't read it for clarifying my theological views. I'd read it to challenge my faith and increase my thinking about the power of God.

I loved those 2 books and have read them multiple times. Yes, they are fiction and not scripture, but there is a lot of truth in them, and I agree that they encourage prayer.

Back in the day (21 years ago), I thought it was the best thing written since the Bible.

In 2008, I realized it wasn't all that. And that Peretti really isn't a very good writer. [:'(]

Remember when Star Wars first came out? It was very technologically advanced at the time. By todays standards it was quite cheesy instead.

I read this book a couple of times. It was the first Christian novel I read that I really enjoyed. (Now, I read lots of good Christian fiction.) It's a good read and reminded me of how the Lord takes care of us. "He orders his angels to protect you wherever you go." Psalm 91:11

You answered your own question--"at the time."

Since I've found many others writers since then who are tons better (Eric Wilson, Randy Singer, Robert Liparulo, Dean Koontz) and returned to reading Stephen King, I can safely say that Peretti and Ted Dekker are hacks of epic caliber. THAT'S why.
