Ok....so when I get married in August, I'll then be living in a small town of about 2000 people. I can continue to work at my current job, but that would mean 2 hours in the car a day and that is just not cool with me.

So, there is a city about20-30ish minutes away, but those jobs are few and far between. And then there is the small town I'll be living in.

Any advice on finding a local job in this small town? There is no newspaper that I am aware of and it's not like I can hop on career builder or monster to find a job that way.

first of all, live one day at a time. You are futurizing. Secondly ask God to open a door of opportunity for you. God is good about opening doors. Third, make a pro and con list about commuting 30 minutes into the next town. i'm with you aobut the driving for two hours, no. 40 minutes, however, seems reasonable. Fourth, look for osmething in that small town, is there a supermarket? apost office? a hardware store? what is the local economy? do you write, can you work for the little newspaper or start one? can you do an eBay business on the side? Look for income opportunities.

I think that is part of my problem....I have trouble thinking "small town." LOL.....I'm a big city, corporate kinda gal. My preference would be to work in the city 30ish minutes (depending on what part) so I can still feel like I'm living in some sort of civilization [&:]

The town does have those kinds of businesses and such. I suppose I'll just have to do some research and such to figure it out. There is NO WAY I'll make the money I'm making now in the more local city or the town. But, being closer to home and finally making some connections in the strange world of the plains states will be a good thing.

I'll be following my own advice in a couple of months. Moving from the Atlanta area to the Valdosta. You already know to Network. Just keep casually bringing up the fact that you are looking. That famous "I know a friend of a friend" system can often find you a nice job. Patience, if you can afford to be patient, is key.

It depends on what you do for a living. Are you just looking for "a job" or something in a particular career field?

Definitely try a newspaper.

Pray for the Lord to open doors of opportunity.

In a small town, everything is in who know, or in who they know. Tell everyone you meet not only that you are looking for a job, but what kind of job you are looking for. You might be surprised where a good job lead comes from.

In many cities, commuting takes at least an hour each way, especially if you are coming in from either the suburbs or the small towns surrounding the city. I have a friend who commutes 1 hr 15 minutes each way from a small town outside the Dallas/Ft Worth area, and it's only as short as it is becuase she works in an office that offers flex time--she is at work by 6 am, and leaves around 3:30 each day, so she misses rush hour both ways. When she has to work late or go in later, commute is more like 2 hours and up each way. So be sure to consider rush hour traffic, not just distance to the city during non-peak times.

With the price of gas these days, you might be better off taking a job closer to home for less pay, than a higher paying job that is further away.
