In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F.
Kennedy's challenge to, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but
what you can do for your country," gave up his student deferment, left
college in Virginia and voluntarily joined the Marines.


In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of
service in the Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman.
(They provide medical assistance to the Marines as well as to Navy
personnel.)

The man did so well in corpsman school that he was the
valedictorian and became a cardiopulmonary technician. Not surprisingly,
he was assigned to the Navy's premier medical facility, Bethesda Naval
Hospital, as a member of the commander in chief's medical team, and
helped care for President Lyndon B. Johnson after his 1966 surgery.

For his service on the team, which he left in 1967, the
White House awarded him three letters of commendation.

What is even more remarkable is that this man entered
the Marines and Navy not many years after the two branches began to
become integrated.

While this young man was serving six years on active
duty, Vice President Dick Cheney, who was born the same year as the
Marine/ sailor, received five deferments, four for being an
undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective
father.

Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five
years younger than the African-American youth, used their student
deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on
active duty through family connections.

Who is the real patriot? The young man who interrupted
his studies to serve his country for six years or our three political
leaders who beat the system? Are the patriots the people who actually
sacrifice something or those who merely talk about their love of the
country?

After leaving the service of his country, the young
African-American finished his final year of college, entered the
seminary, was ordained as a minister, and eventually became pastor of a
large church in one of America's biggest cities.

This man is Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the retiring pastor
of Trinity United Church of Christ.

This man also said "GD America," has a false gospel, said WTC people deserved what they got. Wright said whites gave the blacks aids, and on and on. He is not a true minister of Christ, if you line it up with the word. I will not praise this man, he is a divider, not unifer, a racist, and needs to find Jesus himself. I am sorry if this hateful in your eyes, not intended to be, but this is a hateful, bitter old man. He is a wolf in Sheeps Clothing. I will pray for him, and love him in the Lord, but, until he changes his views will not embrace him as a brother. BTW Obama trying to run from him, went to an all white, or mostly white church Sunday. I do not care what he did in the past, long ago. His now is lacking very badly, and no jutifying his actions.

You all should really watch the interview Pastor Wright did with Bill Moyer. Since the mindset here is hell bent on accusing Wright as an anti-American, racist, bigot the video is not going to change these opinions, but for those who are fair minded then it’s worth watching.

Why Jeremiah Wright is so wrong

I was profoundly depressed by the conversation between PBS's Bill Moyers and Barack Obama's pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ, broadcast on PBS Friday night. I found myself thinking this race might be either too short, or too long, for Obama to win the presidency. It's too long because already, for some people, the thrill is gone, the honeymoon is over, even Obama's media fans are starting to ask tough questions. It's too short because the "national conversation on race" we all keep promising to have has barely begun, and it would take longer than November to hash out how much Wright's role in Obama's life should mean to voters. But the Moyers-Wright interview had to be troubling to anyone who cares about race relations, American politics or the Obama campaign. Now there are new and longer taped excerpts from Wright's incendiary sermons, and Obama's pastor will also be at a press conference in Washington, D.C., Monday morning. Clearly the Wright story isn't going away.

My goal in this post is to try not to treat Wright the way Wright seems to treat the idea of America; to not utterly d Wright because some of (a lot of? I'm not sure) what Wright has said is disturbing and wrong. I am grateful to Bill Moyers for airing so much of the sermons. I enjoyed their thoughtful conversation about theology and politics. But the whole idea that Wright has been attacked over "sound bites," and if Americans saw his entire sermons, in context, they'd feel differently, now seems ludicrous. The long clips Moyers played only confirm what was broadcast in the snippets (and the longer excerpts out today are even more troubling).

Talking to Moyers, Wright argued that the famous "God d America" sermon was a) only condemning bad American government actions, and b) using "d" in a singular religious sense referring to how God treats those who've sinned horrendously (he went into hermeneutics to explain why most Americans can't understand him). But his explanation was unconvincing. Wright could probably have gotten away with "God d Bush" for the bloody Iraq war if he wanted to, or "God d Truman" for bombing the Japanese at the end of World War II, or even "God d the American government!" for its many mistakes. But "God d America" -- that's sweeping. It sounds like it's the idea of America, its fundamental principles, that he's rejecting.

I agree with you. It's just that people are complex, and multidimensional. No one is 100% Holy ...100% of the time..only Jesus , surely not any of us . We all fit somewhere in the gray area between evil and holy..for we all come short of the glory. I always try to check myself first before I look at others, because I am the person that is always with me. As for Rev. Wright although I am not a mental health professional , I do wonder if he is bi-polar. I know someone that when they go off their medications they act outrageous and bizarre.One the other hand he may be showing his true colors..I would like to put him on a slow boat to China..

Wow, has the Rev. wright really gone down hill from Patriot to biggotted racist, USA hating, etc.

Wonder where he took the wrong path.

So wright was a marine, let's not forget that Lee Harvey Oswald was also a U.S. Marine.

I know I am not perfect, I know I amnot Christ, but I was praying for him today, and it came to my mind the " Love Chp", it seemed that in reading that chp. He was none of these at this time, most of us are some of them. There is still hope, for him though with prayer, and maybe medication, I think he saw alot of unfairness in his life, and it warped his sense of love. Pastor EV Hill, did not act that way, and he was older, and suffered too, but he became a new creation, you could tell. I miss him so much. Ken I saw the interview, on PBS, and I try and be fairminded, but in honesty, it seemed double speak, or I misunderstood it. I can pray for him, as we are commanded, and if we all do it, God can change his hurts and heart.

I agree with you. It's just that people are complex, and multidimensional. No one is 100% Holy ...100% of the time..only Jesus , surely not any of us . Rev. Wright is preaching a false gospel, he says on his website, the theology is based on James Cones book" .

That's where me and him part.

Anger is such an unhealthy, destructive emotion. Wrights anger is wrong, Do we not all have blood on our hands blacks, and whites? I was watching American Justice this morning on A&E, about the Los Angles riots, in the nineties. A white truck driver was pulled by a group of young black men, and beaten almost to death. The young men were not prosecuted, because fear of more rioting. I did not see it all, because I had to leave. This white man was just in a semi-truck doing his job, pulled out and beaten. Wright can choose to be whole if he rids himself of anger, than his soul would be healed. The Lord does not excuse blacks or whites for unforgivness. And remember the devil is an equal oportunity destroyer, and willing to destroy black people, and drag them to hell for hanging on to hate, like Wright, Sharton, and Jackson. What wright does is not the teaching of Christ and brings satan glory. What Wright preaches cause discord between breathren, which God hates. Makes people in his congergation very angry, and brings the devils foothold in black peoples life, and cause resentment in whites. See him for what he is, an angel of light, and compare his teachings to the word of God.

The writer gave himself away when he tried to say that GWB's militiary experience as a national guard jet fighter pilot was something like draft dodging Bill Clinton's, who served no capacity for a single moment. But he did write a letter to a colonel saying that he hated the military.

Wright is a lunatic. Telling people that America created AIDS to kill blacks should have settled that.

Is Jerimah Wright trying to destroy Obamas campaign? He cutting a swath through the US. Talking about Farakan (sp), being good. Three times in the last twenty four hours, spewing hate and such> Obama is trying very hard to distance himself from him, saying he is not agreeing with him at all, and looking very mad. Wright, is angry at Obama, and getting even, why else would he hurt him this way?

Apparently, I hear there is a liberal conspiracy at the Chicago Tribune to try and have Marxist preachers take over the world and convince everyone that Jesus had brown eyes and wasn't Caucasian. They are also engaging in a conspiracy to get AIDS into the US.

In all seriousness, though, I don't think that Obama is being materially hurt by Wright. He's distanced himself from Wright's comments, and I think that's enough for most people. Many conservatives will use it as an excuse not to vote for him, but he'd probably make some mistake later down the line anyways that would give the other side an excuse.

Saw it just now on NBC news, he is being hurt by this man. He is trying to run from this man, but Wright is on a hate roll. The lesson is this, watch who you choose for friends.

I think anybody who thinks Wright materially hurts Obama is kidding themselves- or is looking for an excuse to vote against Obama, anyways. Obama has distanced himself from Wright's wacky claims, and that's enough for me.

Rev. Wright needs to go somehwere and sit down. I just watched some of his speech at the press conference.

Whew! IT made me cringe. All that singing and different voices, and dancing, not only do I have an issue with his theology, watching one of his sermon clips, I got problems with talking about monica and bill have sex and using gestures.

Man, If I was BO, I would be meeting with a ......... ok no i would'nt.

Watching him, I think BO was used by him and the Nation of Islam.

They are getting what they want, "Uncle Tom" negros and whites fighting.

That's been their goal, I read Eli Muhaummed book, Louis's book, etc.

Governments fail. The government in this text comprised of Caesar, Cornelius, Pontius Pilate - the Roman government failed. The British government used to rule from East to West. And governments change. And governments lie. And those three points of the sermon. And that is the context in which I was illustrating how the governments biblically and the governments since biblical times, up to our time, changed, how they failed, and how they lie. And when we start talking about my government right or wrong, I don't think that goes. That is consistent with what the will of God says or the word of God says that governments don't say right or wrong. That governments that wanna kill innocents are not consistent with the will of God. And that you are made in the image of God, you're not made in the image of any particular government. We have the freedom here in this country to talk about that publicly, whereas some other places, you're dead if say the wrong thing about your government.




Yes Mr Wright, governments do fail.

Us liberals have played relatively nicely on McCain's Stilson-like tendancies so far (ask anyone in the Senate who has disagreed with him on something he felt strongly about). Why must y'all be so nasty when it merely comes to issues with Obama's friends.

I think the reason that McCain looks squeaky clean while Obama and Hillary don't is that McCain hasn't had the talking heads walking all over him quite as much. Maybe it's that we saw what Bush did to him in 2000, and we feel like playing a bit nicer.
