Painting Kitchen Cabinets (Full Version)

Hi! I live in Mexico and my cabinets are not the highest quality. Better than particle pressed board but not the quality of anything you'd be able to buy in the states. They're finished with a high gloss polyurethan finish and I'd like to paint them. First of all, I'm thinking of painting them a light green. Could anyone give me tips about how I should do this? Should I sand them down first, apply a primer or can I just prime them and paint the color I want? Thanks so much!!

do you know what kind of paint they have on them right now? (water based or oil based).
If they have a sheen to them then you need to lightly sand them to get that sheen off or else the paint won't stick to them and will start peeling off.
I personally would use a primer underneath because that's the best way to do it in less coats and it makes it look more professional looking IMO.

We painted our cabinets from our previous home. We cleaned it out first-- grease and other gunk then primed it then we painted. We also changed the hardwares for the cabinets and they turned out really nice. My advice to you (which we did not do)....take out the cabinets and paint them. We could have saved time painting if we took them all out.

Presently, the finish reminds me of something you'd find on a gym floor. They have a high gloss wood finish. They aren't painted yet. Sounds like I need to sand them a little and prime them. I can only remove the doors and yes I want to change at least the knobs. My house is made of concrete. Very frustrating if you're only used to drywall. We know how to patch drywall, but concrete is another story. I think we subconsciously don't want workers in our house because that will cut the odds of a future break in. Eventually, someone will have to come and repair walls as concrete crumbles with humidity. Even in the high dessert.
