So I was looking at some Beth Moore books, just wanted to know if any other women have found her books useful and biblically sound?

Definitely useful and Biblically sound. I've done the Breaking Free and Daniel studies with our Bible study group.

I'm not a fan. I've done Jesus the One and Only and Daniel.

She's mostly Biblically sound, but doesn't get you in your Bible and keep it in context so you can really learn from God. One of the things that really bothers me about her is her imagination... in an effort to make sure her readers understand ther characters aren't characters, but real people, she goes on these pretend journeys into what their lives were like. The Daniel book was interpretation based, instead of inductive.

If you have to do a pop-christian study instead of direct Bible Study, she is one of the best... but I'm wary of such studies due to bad experiences with out of context scriptures, prooftexting, and interpretation-based studies. I'd recommend How to Read the Bible for All It's Worth or a Precept course to learn studying the Bible inductively long before I would recommend a Beth Moore study.

wow, I haven't done either of the 2 studies that you did... but to think that Beth Moore doesn't really have you in the scriptures all that much is a foreign thought. I always seem to "complain" about how often we have to flip from here to there to here again, and over there... and there is always SO much scripture that she had us look up... in the ones I have done. I learned a ton in the ones I've done. (and I consider myself to be pretty knowledgable to begin with...)

[;)] She does have you flipping a lot in scripture which is exactly what scares me about her. It's very easy to take things out of context if you are flitting here and there. Also, and this may be for myself and not fit with others of different personalities, all that flipping make me less likely to really learn. I may be able to reproduce the gist of what she said, but not to the extent that I could easily show others. When I study inductively, I flow from thought to thought (or event to event depending on what book I'm studying) and am much more likely to be able to explain something intelligently to others and find the passage I need.

I know my opinion about her is odd in the Christian world, but I did want to post it since Nicole asked and it was different. I don't mean to turn this thread into an argument thread about Beth Moore, not that you are doing that Pumpkin. I just want to be clear that I don't want that to happen and that everyone is entitled to share their opinions, even if it differs from mine.

Old Beth Moore...she's ok and maybe recommended

New Beth Moore - only with lots of discernment - depending on your theology and doctrine...just use discernment.

I think, as with reading any author, you need to bring your brain. If something doesn't fit what you know of God or the Bible, you do your own research and don't just rely on someone else. Also, in a small group setting, you will get lots of different views and thoughts. Some of these things can't be proven one way or another, but I don't think that means there is no value in them. God will use the same study to touch different people in different ways, because they are at different places in their lives.

Have I heard Beth Moore say things I'm not sure I agree with? Yup. But then, sometimes I think I am the only person on earth that I agree with, and I know I'm not always right either.[8D] I've not heard her say or write anything that raised a big red flag for me, and I'm generally pretty good with that kind of stuff.

I also understand that many prefer to just study Scripture on its own. I do think there is value in gleaning wisdom from other Christians too though.

Hmmmm ok then, I don't like that sort of thing Zippy when they make up stuff that would of happened. I think Lineage of Grace does that doesn't it?

Grrr, I just want to read a book about being a woman. I know that people have said captivating, but that doesn't fit my situation either.

Any other good books out there?

And please don't mention any Joyce Meyer ones, I am not reading hers!!

I concur. I've only done one Beth Moore study (A Heart Like His), but I was bored out of my mind. I don't remember her saying anything I disagreed with, necessarily, but I also don't think she said anything I hadn't heard by the time I was in jr. high youth group [8|] It just wasn't very deep (at least not the study I did). Also, we watched the videos and by the end, I thought I was going to die if I had to listen to one more Seussean poem [&:]

Granted, I'm not a fan of most women's bible studies, though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt [;)]

yeah that's what I was going to say...what exactly are you looking to get something for..what part of your life or who you are. I mean, I know you said you don't want something for "moms"...or "wives".....but what is the one area you want to focus on?

Zippy (hehehe...I like that name....never used it for you until now though....lol)...I agree about most of her stuff that I have read. I haven't been overly impressed with it...not so much that I would bend over backwards to do a study of hers. I prefer studying the Bible on my own with credible teachers who can explain things that I can't get out of it though....like teachers that focus on things I wouldn't know about the culture...because when you unlock the culture that the text was written in and to you unlock the whole key to understanding it at a deeper level. I personally have never felt that Beth Moore (or really that many others) have ever actually done that kind of a deep cultural unlocking for me.

Hmm I am with Sarah, I like to study the Bible mainly on my own, but I guess I was looking for something to sort of help me or draw me closer in to Jesus. It's hard to explain. I just feel that since I have become a wife and mother my love for Jesus has diminished I guess somewhat, I mean I used to CRAVE reading the Word, going to church, I used to write poems about God, studies etc etc and that sort of "passion" has all gone. So I guess I don't know, a book won't fix that but could inspire me on my way and make me feel that I am not a failure or abnormal and that I do have an important role to play in the Kingdom being a mother, wife and woman.

if you want to be inspired to be drawn more into the word and understand the culture of the Bible more, then I have someone you can look into....it's a man though not a woman....and I am not sure if he has books out or not, but he has great video series and a wonderful web site with tons of info on it.

I do like reading Max Lucado, is he biblically sound? Ugh, its so hard to know whether these people are off with the fairies or not because I used to think people like Joyce Meyer and Hagin were biblically sound.

Nicole,

One of the best books that I have read/studied was "The Contemplative Mom: Restoring Rich Relationship with God in the Midst of Motherhood." It focuses on various spiritual disciplines to help cultivate your relationship with God in a deeper way. Many times, it is difficult with babies and young children for a woman to be able to have a sense of her relationship with God.

Well, you could always just do your own study of the women of the Bible (Eve, Ruth, Esther, Mary, Elizabeth, Miriam, Rahab, Bathsheba, the beloved in the Song of Solomon, Hannah the mother of Samuel, etc etc etc). Read their stories, try to imagine what they were going thru and why they made the decisions they made and why they did the things they did. Put yourself in their position - would you have done things the same? Why or why not? Read about them and see what characteristics you have that compare/contrast to theirs. Use a place like biblegateway.com to do a search for their name and see if they're mentioned anywhere else in the Bible, and if so what it has to say about them there.

I haven't read anything by Beth Moore so I can't help there. I haven't really heard anything *bad* about her though.

And I like Max Lucado. [:)]
