My dad's oldest brother, Uncle Wayne (who lives in Lexington, KY), was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (stage 4 brain cancer) back in September 2007, about four days after we scheduled my daughter, Paislee's, heart surgery. The size and location of Uncle Wayne's tumor was such that surgery was impossible, and chemo/radiation attempts were unsuccessful. Throughout this difficult time, he has never complained or been bitter - and he's done a great job at checking in on Paislee and other family members, never failing to express his love and concern for them. Yesterday, he even called my Papaw (his daddy) to wish him a happy 89th birthday. This morning, I received an email from my cousin Pam, who has taken care of him from the very beginning. Uncle Wayne is very weak and unable to get out of bed now. She has to have help to turn him to avoid bedsores as well. Uncle Wayne is unable to hold the phone when we call to talk with him, and his voice is weak as well. It takes a lot of effort for him to talk, and he tires very easily. We called to talk with him this morning - and from our conversation, I can tell that the end is near and that he welcomes it. He is ready to go home to our Lord and Father and to be reunited with his momma (my Mimi) and other friends and loved ones. (Praise God for Uncle Wayne's enduring faith and trust!) I ask that you please keep Uncle Wayne; his two sons, Tyler and Spenser; my cousin, Pam; and all of his hospice workers/caregivers in your prayers. I also ask that you keep our family in your prayers - especially my dad, Don; my uncle, Myron (his brothers); and my Papaw. Please pray for God to make my Uncle Wayne comfortable and ask that God gives us all peace as we wait for the end of his battle with cancer to come. He has fought such a long and hard battle - and done so joyfully, always praying for God's will in his life and never showing fear or questioning God. What a marvelous example he's been for all of us! Thank you in advance to all of my dear friends here at Crosswalk for your thoughts and prayers! I will keep you posted on how Uncle Wayne is doing. ---------------------- May 1 update Uncle Wayne was placed in the hospital last night. His lungs are filling with fluid, and he is too weak to cough any of it out. He is in a lot of pain, and due to the morphine he is receiving, he is incoherent and mostly nonresponsive now. I spoke with my cousin, Spenser, this morning. In addition to dealing with his dad's ongoing problems, he is also in the midst of finals week. He has one final left tomorrow - so he is studying for it at his dad's bedside there at the hospital. My heart breaks for him! [&o] Thank you all for your prayers thus far. Please continue to pray for our family - but especially for Tyler, Spenser and Uncle Wayne - during this difficult and sad time.
