As a newbie to this site, i just wondered - how much of the bible Christians here believe?

I believe all the books and every chapter and every verse. But i meet far too many christians who range from not believing a few verses/ chapters to ONLY believing in the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus and NOTHING else!

May God bless each of you today and always, BibleBased.

Welcome to this community!
Hmmmm, my Bible has 76 books. I believe all of them as the Word of God revealed and given to us by God through His Church.

Quite a relief so far! I'm not a new christian BTW only new to this site. It's been about 10 years since i returned to faith, i'm 39, and i grew up with 3 services on a sunday till i was 13, and on and off attendence in the gap years.
I'm interested without starting a debate please what are those 'extra' 10 books mariadreamer. Is it a Jerusalem or similar bible? I'm looking to make new friends, so anyone looking for an arguement - just walk away. Love BibleBased.

Mariadreamer is Eastern Orthodox. I'm sure you're aware that the Catholic Church recognizes as canonical books such as 1st and 2nd Maccabees, Tobit, etc. The Eastern Orthodox recognize those books as canonical as well as 3rd and 4th Maccabees and the Prayer of Manesseh. There's a thread on the debate behind the biblical canon which I won't go into here. :) But as a Catholic my bible contains 73 books, the Eastern Orthodox have 76, and I want to say that the Oriental Orthodox have 78 books... I'll have to ask one of my neighbors.

2 Timothy 3:16-"All[66 at least]is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."

Pick/choosing what we 'believe' seems disingenuous in the least and the height of arrogance at the worst.

I believe the entire library we call the Bible is important. Within it, however, the gospels are by far the most critical part, because they tell the actual story of Jesus Christ.

The 66 books we know as the Bible had not been compiled at the time this scripture was penned.

Hi! I am using the Bible of the Septuagint translation for the OT (the Greek text used in the times of Christ), and the New Testament books are the same. It's not the Jerusalem Bible (I don't actually know if the Jerusalem Bible uses the Septuagint OT or the Masoretic text). The bible I am using is officially called St. Athanasius Academy Septuagint translation (See link here) The other 10 books are
2 Ezra
Tobit
Judith
1, 2, 3 Maccabees
Wisdom of Solomon
Wisdom of Sirach
Baruch
Epistle of Jeremiah
I also think 2 other books are longer (Daniel, 2 Chronicles)

I was going to say the same thing. So what was Paul referring to when he said "all scriptures...

Paul was speaking to bishop Timothy and was referring to what was used as scripture at his time, meaning the Old Testament. Consider the fact that 2 Timothy was written about 30 years before the books written by Apostle John were finished.

This cannot be true, since at the time Paul wrote 2 Timothy, he was at the end of his ministry and ready for his departure (c. 66 A.D.). During His lifetime Paul has preached and taught the Word of God and written his epistles by Divine inspiration. Peter had already acknowledged ALL of Paul's epistles as Scripture ( 2 Pet. 3:15,16).

Therefore, when Paul the apostle and prophet wrote to Timothy about "all Scripture", he had in mind not only the entire Hebrew Tanakh, but all the Gospels and Epistles (including his own), and prophetically even the book of Revelation. God shows His prophets things to come.

Why should we suppose that in such a wide ranging and significant statement as 2 Tim. 3:16,17, God the Holy Spirit would omit the New Testament of all things? This is utterly false, and flies in the face of all we know regarding the epistles, the Gospels, and Divine revelation.

BTW, the Bible happens to be "66 books" only because the Hebrew Bible was rearranged. As to the Apocrypha, Orthodox Jews and conservative Christians were fully aware that these were un-inspired writings not to be placed on the same footing as Scripture. Some are mere legends.

I didn't say the Holy Spirit wanted to omit the New Testament! The New Testament is divinely inspired scripture because it was revealed as such to the Church. I never intended to imply that just because St. Paul was referring to the Old Testament, he meant forget the New.

Again, St. Paul was speaking to bishop Timothy, pointing out how well trained he was already in the apostolic tradition, and since Timothy died around 80AD and Apostle John didn't even finish writing his books until 90-96AD, Timothy couldn't have used John's writings as scripture just yet since they weren't there. This is what I meant. The application for us is NOT to omit the NT, but to see it as part of the entire tradition handed down and therefore Holy Scripture.

Paul was specifically refering to the Tenach - the Hebrew scriptures that are commonly called Old Testament.

Clearly the statement can refer to NT as well, but what Timothy would have understood was the OT.

I am disappointed that this is the second day for me on this site and some members here have a taken my topic and decided to turn it into an arguement. I asked people to walk away if they wanted to argue these points - i only asked because 76 book was unfamiliar to me. Just when we think we know it all, we realise how little we know!
As my question has been answered and i started the original topic, may i respectfully ask all readers to stick to the original post for their replies. If you wish to tell me anything else, please personal message. I look forward to getting to know you all, love BibleBased.
