I love that my kids wear uniforms to school. But my kids are 7 and 8 and are very rough on clothes. And I guess I'm relatively pragmatic and not at all prone to spend a lot on clothes for myself or for them. They've been cracking down on the uniform code the last couple of years, which I think is good. But we've had one specialty store that supplied all the shirts and had them as a option for bottoms but also JCPenny was an option. JCP was a little cheaper than the specialty store although I do know there are problems there because they only seem to offer uniform pants a couple months of the year. I just refuse to spend $30-$40 for my son's pants for him to roll around in the mulch on the playgroud.

I just found out last night they've contrated with an "adorable" shop about 30 miles away for uniforms for next year and we still have the local specialty store as an option but no longer JCP. I love matching scrunchies as much as anyone but it just seems incredibly insensitive to only have the expensive option - especially with the tightening just about everyone's budget is feeling right now - I guess not everyone!

I certainly don't want the cheapy polyester uniforms I see at some private schools in the area. But a reasonable option was nice to have at least for his bottoms. I'll hit the used uniform sale at the end of this year again and usually can get most of what I need that way so I'm not too worried - just a little bugged by the decision. As it is, I go to the used uniform sale and marvel at how parents keep their kids' clothes in such good condition - I don't think I'll ever finish a school year with anything worthy of selling to a younger student.

Oh well.

Thrift stores? Ours actually have sections that contain the basic uniform clothing required by our local schools.

Is this for a private school? or public?

Our kids' public elementary school has a "uniform", but it's quite a bit more "flexible"....just simple red, white or blue "polo" shirts and other tops (no noticeable "logos")....tan, blue or blue jean pants/skorts/capris/shorts, etc..etc...
perhaps there are a few more minor 'restrictions', but that's pretty much it.
and, we get those at JCPenney....Target.....pretty much anywhere has clothes that are "simple" like that.

As long as the colors are correct, the shirts have "collars", and pants/jeans are the right colors, and don't have holes, then you're pretty much "good to go".

And, on top of that, wednesday is always "college apparel" day, which kids can wear college t-shirts/sweatshirts, etc..etc.., in place of the "uniform"....

and, then on Fridays, instead of uniform, they can wear their School's "Spiritwear".....school t-shirts, and such....

so, really, the kids only have to wear the "UNIFORM" 3 days a week....

I just found the website for the new company and it's not as bad as I thought based on the conversation last night. Shirts and shorts are both about $18 and shorts have elastic so I think my skinny kids'll be OK. The skirts and skorts and jumpers are kinda pricey but oh well. They said the prices were comparable to the specialty store option here in town but it seems a bit more reasonable to me.

If you just need the basic blue skort, pants or polos try Target and Kohls. I prefer Lands End because they wash better than the rest, but that's me. French Toast is another company that sells cheaper uniforms.

What on earth does your school's uniform consist of that it can only be bought in one or two places?!

I have a friend whose boys go to a Catholic school with a uniform requirement. Once or twice a year they hold a uniform swap, so that parents can trade outgrown uniforms. You may want to try organizing one.

Wow. I think I'd go before the school board and plead your case. Maybe they don't know what a hardship they are putting on people by only allowing two stores.

Our Christian school has a dress code...shirts must have collars, can be either button down or polo; pants must be slacks or casual khaki type pants. We can find those most anywhere.

We only have a specialty store option for both schools. One thankfully the owner is a Christian and lets you make whatever deposit you can afford and then you pay what you can all summer. He even does alterations of the uniforms for less than what he charges for the adult clothes. Good guy.

The other store is a different matter and to make things worse they raised the price and lowered the quality. [:'(] The school is going with a different company next year, so I got a lot for 50-70% off for the fall. I did not want to buy everything just in case they grow more than I anticipate.

That is crazy.

Maybe this is something you can suggest for next school year:

My DD's school (private w/uniforms) has a room in the office where used uniforms are always for sale. Most people donate them then the money gets donated to the school. This serves as motivation for the hassle (not that it is a big hassle) for the ladies in the office to have to keep up with the sales (take the money). The people donating the used uniforms can also elect to have the money put on their childs account at school. They mark the tags so they know what to do with it. It is a great thing. I have not bought new uniforms for a year! This is definitely something I would bring up as I am sure there are other parents who have the same concerns as yourself. It has saved me tons of money!

Are they suggesting a certain brand? We had to use a brand called French Toast. Not a clue how they came up with that name, but I hated it because while I could find them at target and walmart, like you, my boy was rough on his clothes. And they had to wear the navy blue pants. Blue fades very quickly and the knees get faded twice as quickly.

I was so happy when we transferred to a school that didn't require uniforms, but just had a strict dress code, and now am even happier that we are in a public school with just a dress code. My kids don't have anything in their closets that they can't wear to school. My rule of thumb is if they can't wear it at school, then they can't wear it on the weekends either.

But while we were supposed to use the French toast brand, we were allowed to buy clothes of different brands that had the same style and cut to them. That made it easier for us. But Target has all of that stuff online if you are looking for the French Toast brand. If not, I can't really help you. But maybe you might want to ask if another brand would be ok as long as it followed right alongside the current required brand.
