i wouldn't trust it only because I have had the front rail of the crib collapse for no reason on me before...and if that happened when that kind of thing were on there it would be very dangerous and baby could fall (I know, it would be on the mattress right below, but still...I am weird about falls esp with little babies because my mom rolled off the couch at about 2 weeks old...about 16-18inches and had seizures her whole childhood because of the brain injury she got from that fall)

Jae-that's great that Jadon is sleeping in his own bed!! WOO HOO for you! Well done. I wouldn't worry about the SIDS thing, loads of ppl don't have their babies in their rooms and nothing happens, if you are making sure you aren't making them too hot, no blankets that are loose etc etc you are taking all the precautions they recommend then don't stress :)
Nath had a terrible sleep last night. Took me 2 hours of holding him and rocking him to get him to sleep at 11pm. He woke just before 1am then again at 5am and at 7am. My mum is coming for the weekend, for mothers day so that should be good to have another pair or hands around seeing hubby doens't get home til about 7 or 8 each night and is too tired to even hold Nath while I tidy up.

Mine were in their own cots/room from 2 weeks old (ds) and 4 days old (dd), and I had absolutely no concerns about SIDS. Personally I think SIDS is more to do with something already wrong with the baby rather than where they sleep etc.

SIDS isn't something they die from like a disease or something, it is simply what they categorize it as if they can't figure out why they died. There is a connection to SIDS and vaccines though, so I would watch my kids more carefully after they had those. We also did everything else we could to reduce the other risks (temp of room, no extra anything in their bed including baby bumper, sleeping safely on their back or side...we had to do side with a few of ours because of breathing problems or them spitting up, etc)

Nath does this funny thing, well I have only noticed it yesterday and 2 days before that. He has only done it 2 times. He was sitting on the floor and he was looking up at the tv I think (he was miles away from it) and then nodded his head up and down a few times in a row and then stopped. What do you suppose that is? Should I be worried?

figuring out that his neck works maybe? oh or maybe he figured out that doing that makes his head feel weird like when you spin in a chair or get dizzy purposely. did he smile when he did it?

Okay, I'm only like 7 weeks pregnant so I am obviously over-thinking everything way too soon, but I wanted to ask....
My husband and I travel fairly often and we also plan on having our baby at grandparents' on a regular basis. I would also like the baby to sleep in a bassinet next to us for at least the first few months of life.
Also, I'm on a tight budget and we have limited space.
So, my (inexperienced) solution is to get a nice travel crib and use it all the time for all sleeping (whether we're actually traveling or not).
I'm looking at the Baby Bjorn Travel Light crib. It seems to be high quality and they say it works until about 3 years of age, so therefore it would fit just fine into my strict budget. I don't see a reason it couldn't be an "everyday" crib too -- why couldn't I use it exclusively?
Also, it seems like the Pack N Play has a similar shape and is advertised as also being a "play yard." Why couldn't this also be a "play yard"?
Experienced mamas, tell me if I am making a mistake in my thinking! Thanks.

I imagine that the mattress isn't thick enough to be supportive for everyday use, and that's why it's only intended for occasional use. I'd also imagine that it's not stable enough for regular everyday use - I personally wouldn't want to leave a child asleep in that unattended (whereas for overnight use there is always a parent/adult present).
Looking at the bed, I'd think that, for the money, you could buy 2 nice second-hand cribs and buy new mattresses for each - keeping one at home at one at your grandparents'.
Another consideration is that some babies just don't like travel cribs/pack and plays. Flintejae's baby just wouldn't sleep in there at all, but has settled nicely in his actual crib.

we have a travel pack-n-play...this one basically, but in sage green...ours does not have a changing table that attaches to it like some of the other more expensive one do (we have a changing table so we saw no need in that). We used it for Jack (our fourth) until he was over a year old...when he started getting too big for the top we put him on the bottom. However I will say that Jack is a small baby...at 21mo now he is wearing mostly 12mo clothes...so some babies would outgrow it before a year old because it is quite small (fits well in small spaces and is great for traveling though!!!). We also have a much larger play pen that we got in Germany that we used for Emma (our third) and she slept in that during most of her first two years (her second year of life was spent at my moms while my hubby was deployed and I was pregnant with Jack, so the portability of it was great because we were able to bring it from Germany and set it up and take it down when we needed to at my moms house). We also have a crib, but honestly, IMO it isn't necessary. Emma went straight from the play pen to the bottom bunk on the bunk bed with a rail guard. PIC of the play pen (full size play pen)...PIC of the bunk with rail guard.
I searched for the other one you were talking about (the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light) and honestly, for that price, I would go with a Pack-N-Play. I can't find on any site any information about the weight limit for the thing, and I doubt my 3yo would fit in it...she outgrew her full size German one after about two years (and that one is literally the size of a regular baby bed...minus about an inch and a half on the width...we can almost lay a baby bed mattress in it flat). Other then small babies like our fourth, I can't imagine a baby being able to use that for a full three years.

skillfulgourmet--Gebre slept in a playpen for a while, and Biruk started sleeping in a pack'n'play when he outgrew the bassinet. Traditional cribs aren't necessary.

I have never worried about warnings like that simply because we only use a play pen for them when they are sleeping...they don't play in it. A sleeping baby/child isn't going to be harsh on it or be jumping up and down in it or any number of other things that it is intended to withstand if it is being used for playing in. Our kids have all mostly gone to sleep in my arms nursing and been put down to bed already asleep...so that's literally all they do in it...sleep. They may turn over or toss a bit, but they aren't hard on them at all. Even after a few years of constant use our two play pens don't look any worse for the wear and are holding up nicely.
