So, I know that Hunter has been able to comprehend certain things we say for a while now, but I am seeing that expand more and more. When I ask him if he wants to eat for example breakfast, he goes to his highchair and waits for me to put him in it. Yesterday I asked him if he wanted to swing and he walked right over to the swing. There are more examples, but it is truly amazing how much he does understand at such a young age. I think people don't give these little ones enough credit with how smart they are, including myself. So I have realized I don't give him enough credit during the times when he is disobeying. If he can understand when I ask if you want to swing then surely the boy understands "no touch". He keeps me hopping, thats for sure. LOL......yeah that's a cute stage when they understand everything....and want to HELP with everything!!! That ends pretty soon though, so live it up!!! I know Hunter is your first, so you don't have this, but I think it is so cute every day when I call the kids for their "assignments" (chores) or to put away their laundry, Jack comes running in there and gets right in the front of the group, listening for what he can do. He knows where his one drawer of play clothes is, so if I give him things one at a time he will go throw them in there (then I have to either ignore the mess he makes of them or refold them later....lol). Anyway, it is cute how he is right there in the thick of things wanting to help and do and be just like everyone else bigger and older then him. Back a few months ago I was making a chart for the kids and made each of them a stick to go in it with their picture on the end....so I was taking all of their pictures. Started with Jake....went down the line to Hannah then Emma...then as soon as Emma stepped away from the wall there was Jack standing right where she had been smiling and ready for his picture time too!!! It was so cute!!!! quote:
If Levi hears the word 'outside', he is by the door trying to put his shoes on in a nanosecond. LOL...Jack is like that too!!! We have to keep the dead bolt on the front door locked because Jack can open the door (it's one of those handles that is long and you pull it down....not one you have to turn to open). Luckily he hasn't figured out the lock yet (and luckily we have a fence if he does happen to get out the front door).

problem there is that Paul can't unlock that with a key and because of the pool in the back yard we don't have another door he could come in LOL...yeah, it can be irritating for the older kids and Brian to get locked outside, but I just have to let them in.

and want to HELP with everything!!! Yep. He is definitely becoming quite the little helper. I took your advice a while ago on letting him have clean spoons to play with while I load or unload the dishwasher. Now he knows where mommy puts them so he reaches up high and drops them in the drawer...to cute! Oh and yesterday he helped me put towels away by handing each one to me. Such a fun age!

ORIGINAL: manda59 Sarah You could always get a cat flap fitted in the door - and then latch lock the main door. Your dd could then still open the cat's special door for her. problem with that is where to put that safely. ok...house layout... front door is the only door off the front yard. Well, that's not true....we have another door, but it is not used...I will explain it in a minute. Anyway front door is not going to happen because of the screen door...and yes we have to have the screen door. other door to the front....the people that had our house before us changed the garage into a bedroom, laundry room, and bathroom. There is a door that goes straight out to the driveway from that garage conversion room...we do not use this door though and actually have furniture in front of it because it is Jake's room and we do not want the kids using that door since it goes straight out into the driveway, not into the front fenced in yard. Too dangerous. So why it is out is because we feel safer with the furniture in front of it to block them from being able to get out. The bathroom right off of that room has a door that goes outside also, but it goes into the fenced in back(well side of the back) yard. We can't put it there because of the safety issue of the pool. The kitchen has a back door that goes out into the back yard, but again, safety issue with the pool...we can't put it in there. No I am not willing to compromise on either of those doors because I am already a freak when it comes to water, so that is just how it has to be....I WILL NOT give in on that one. The only other door then is in my room...a glass sliding door that we can't exactly put a cat door into. It too goes out into the back yard (less then three feet from the pool too) so again, that is out for that same reason. Hunter sounds like a cute kid Chelle!!!!

Nathan is just starting to get the idea of "putting things back" or "putting our toys away". Today he woke up and his dad went to fetch him, bringing him into our room. Nathan toddled over to his dad's dresser and started pulling out T-shirts. I told Nathan to "put them back", and he did! He also loves pulling out his pint sized broom to sweep the kitchen floor. Although I praise him for "helping mommy to keep the floor clean", he isn't really doing much beyond spreading the dirt around. He enjoyed watching me prepare bread today, but the bead machine still scares him a little when its on the kneading cycle.

Sarah, this is probably my bad, but I often have a difficult time reading your posts. Could you put more line breaks in there, to make it easier for the eyes to pick out the sentences?

Sarah, do you mean because of the size of a cat door, Jack may be able to get out of it? I think they make really small ones. You could look at Petco or some other pet specialty store. ETA...you would have to find one for the screen door, if I am understanding right. I think you could still do it though.

ORIGINAL: peculiar_lady2 yes...because of the size he could get out. Remember he has the mind of a two year old, but still only wears 12mo clothes...small frame too (the 12mo clothes are sometimes even too big for him). So he can fit into places that are too dangerous. Hmmm, you must have very big cat flaps over there! here they are just about cat size! (no way could a baby/toddler get through)

Sarah, THIS one is an insert for a sliding glass door like for your BR. You lock your sliding glass into it and it locks into the doorway. We had one like that, and flap was really small, definitely much smaller than Jack or a future mobile baby. Donna, I'm paranoid about that too. We have stairs right outside our front door. Luckily Timmy can't do most of the doorknobs in our place because they stick really bad. We also put one of those doorknob covers on the front door just in case the first time he learns how to open the door I happen to be distracted. And, we also have a baby gate outside our front door in the entryway. LOL. That is so sad about the little girl. When my aunt was on drugs, I remember showing up at her house unannounced with my mom and grandma when I was 14, and my little cousin was 4 opened the door for us. Horrible neighborhood, BTW in East Oakland, CA. There was some guy passed out on the couch and my aunt was passed out in her room. My cousin was filthy, not like little boy playing in the dirt kind of filthy, but like baby BO and greasy hair and armpit lint and an old soiled diaper, like his poop was dried and stuck to his butt. The first thing he said to us when we walked in was if we could reach the peanut butter from the shelf. So, we took him without telling her. We just left a note. And, we kept him for a year between me & mom, my other aunt and my grandma until she cleaned her act up. I'll never forget that day.

Christiana--that must have been heart rending. Just thinking about a little one in a situation like that breaks my heart. | | | |
