It's only bad behavior because our culture is different. Cultural differences don't make things wrong.

thanks Manda....you have no clue how much I needed to hear that.

Oh yes, I think I do.

It was quite weird how strong I felt it, but I really did, and that was why I posted.

Chelsea- Mary is adorable in the picture on your avatar!

Juice- I gave Grace very very watered down juice, so there was only a hint of it in there but I don't think she was given juice to drink very often and even now at 3 years she just drinks water all day long. She is allowed one fruit box (i think you call them something else) in the morning, a couple of mouthfuls of orange juice with her brekky and then its water all day long.

Juice -- I do give mine 100% juice since we get it on WIC, but it's extremely watered down. Like an inch in the bottom of the sippy cup and the rest water. They also drink milk and plain water throughout the day.

Maybe we could take this to the kicka thread, because I strongly disagree with that statement. If a man is serving his family by helping out when his wife is ill, and his peers jeer or taunt him, then that is wrong... no matter what culture you are in. Contracting malaria and having severe morning sickness on top of it does not make a woman weak or useless.

It only shows ignorance and poor manners when a man is taunted for serving in whatever way his family needs him.

I give Hunter Juicy Juice watered down unless constipated then he gets full juice and usually one sippy cleans him out. He also gets milk and he will also drink water out of a sippy cup too. We started with water for the first month or so of him having liquids other than breastmilk. Don't tell, but he has also had undiluted sweet tea...its rare, but he has had it.

You ladies have made me realize I am worrying about nothing and a toy broom or vacuum will not hurt him. So payday he is getting a new toy

oh good heavens. I made the mistake of letting Sissy have sweet tea from McDonald's the other day....
have you all seen The chipmunks movie? There's a scene where someone gives Alvin and The Chipmunks coffee and they start bouncing off of walls..and swinging from stuff...see where I'm going with this?
Sissy was nuts.

Well, yeah...that wouldn't be good for some kids. The other kids don't often have sweet tea when Nick is here.

Bet you don't make that mistake again.

Just curious - to those of you who give tea to your children, why do you add sugar to it?

(I'm not used to children being given tea anyway - it's not generally done in the UK - but, given that it seems to be a cultural thing there, I'm just wondering about the sugar thing. It seems strange to avoid or at least dilute fruit juice because of the sugar, but then serve sweetenend tea!)

Just wanted to say I agree with you on this Ruth we shouldn't be looking to "cultures" but to the Bible for how we are to treat one another, and it doesn't say a husband should leave his ill wife to fend for herself and the children...

It's a southern US thing, Manda. I personally find it to be disgusting (I don't like any tea), but my husband grew up on it. I've cut the sugar in half from what he used to use. I also don't worry too much about the sugar in things because we really don't allow much to begin with.

oh yeah, it's a south thing. It's common in the south for tea to be served heavily sweetened...just like it's 'normal' up here for tea to be served with cream in it

In the south that is the only way it is made. We drink it sweet, with ice, and never hot.

In the US, your "sweet tea" would be what we call "iced tea"

Hot tea normally doesn't have sugar in it here. Just black or with milk (white).

I found it strange when I was in the US at Dunkin donuts and ordered a coffee and she asked "hot or cold?"

Anyway...back to the baby chat....

What do you guys use on your littles for bug repellent? We're going camping, and I'm not sure what I can use.

Nope. It's different.
I prefer sweetened iced tea over "sweet tea."
Paul thinks sweet tea is more sophisticated and has a more subtle taste.

About ten times more sugar than our iced tea!!! (I made the mistake of trying McD's sweet tea the last time we went to the US ... ended up bein sick as a dog from the sugary syrup!!!)

Iced tea doesn't have s ugar, and sweet tea is iced tea with sugar. But, you put the sugar in it when it's hot then you cool it off. On the west coast both are called iced tea, so it's confusing to go to restaurant and ask for it because they might bring you some nasty bitter stuff with no sugar in it.

Yolanda, Deet bug sprays are safe for kids over 3 or 6 months. When you go to the store to buy some, it should say which age in the back label. But, Deet is the BEST stuff to use because it keep bugs off better than anything out there. When deet first came out, it wasn't safe for kids, so my mom used Avon Skin So Soft on me. Not sure why the mosquitoes don't like it, but they don't. A dryer sheet in his hat will repel gnats.

Jimmy turned 1 today. I can't believe he's that old now. This weekend we're going to my mom's, and I'll make a carrot cake and we'll open presents.

Because Iced Tea does not have 1 WHOLE cup of sugar per gallon, it has more like 1/4 or less. You can also have unsweetened Iced Tea, which is what we drink and since it's also decaf I would rather Gabby drink that over juice.

But then, I've been drinking decaf coffee with cream or milk since I was about 18 months old. I even had my own "mug", which was about the size of a demitasse cup.

Sweet tea is definitely a southern thing and its good to live in the South . Though I do drink it hot sometimes which is not a southern thing, but I like it. I remember visiting friends in Ohio and being at a restaurant with them. I asked for sweet tea and looked like I had two heads. The waitress finally said we have regular tea and if you need sugar there is some on the table. I ordered a coke

Manda, you have made me think with your question on why dilute sugary juice, but not tea. Oh and this better not end up as one of our quotes in your signature...lol .
