I guess it depends on the individual. Are they here to harass, or here to learn?

As another not put off by the Atheists I have to say that most of the ones that come into this forum are much nicer and show more character than others I dealt with in Christian Chat rooms several years ago. Of course I would say that some even have intelligent points in conversation. (Sssshshshsh dont tell them that) lol Of course my responses to them are usually ignored but I do try. Yet I dont expect an Atheist to read anything from someone with my screen name, I once went to an atheist chat to follow someone who IMd me and I did not even type a word before i was jeered and called names and told to leave the room. All it took was for them to see my screen name of BibleL7 and they went into attack mode. I think that as Christians we need to be a better witness to them for if we react with hostility or without prayer we sometimes are a poor witness of our Lord. And since this is forum and not Chat it should be much easier for us to not reply to them as to reply in improper manner. As to the ones that do come in to confront I say let them and if they get out of hand iggy them. Remember we dont always have to respond to them. I would tend to agree that some are looking for answers or testing for when I was an Atheist I would not ever think of coming into anything religious I just considered all religious people as ignorant fools and if I had dealings with them I would sometimes try to mess with them but usually I just ignored any comments about religion. So it is possible they come in to mess with us or the Spirit may be working on them we can not tell. Some times we (speaking as when I was Atheist) mess with Christians just to get a response out of them that would be a poor witness and therefore justify our not wanting anything to do with religion. You see many times Atheists will use the witness of Christians against us for if Christians react without thinking or prayer then they can show anger or come of as foolish to the Atheist. And Atheists love to use it against religion. Oh and the scripture from Jude does not apply to Atheists at all but those that do realize there is a God and just want to continue in sin instead of making Jesus Lord in their life. Just the opinion of a small town preacher

Well after reading some of your posts, I am glad to have Christians like you who seem to know a lot more on the scientific front than I do. You can battle the scientific points with them, much better than I can. Sometimes it seems like my best response to a question would go like this Thanks for this SavedByGrace, I'm glad to know I can serve others this way. I have to admit though my purpose really has more to do with encouraging believers in their faith than convincing atheists.

atheists don't really annoy me because i don't believe there are any true atheists. if you were to push an atheist off of an 80-story building, he/she would be yelling, "oh my God" all the way down until he/she goes splat.

Atheists? Is there really such a thing? I think not. Everyone believes in God. Some just don't know it yet. I don't think so. Someday everyone will know who God really is and that He is, but "believe"? No. I'll bite a little on this... Everyone believes in God, even satan does. The difference for christians is...we submit. When I was an athiest, I would tell ya to believe in God was a stupid immature thing to do. I would tell ya I didn't believe in God. I wouldn't tell ya my god was satan though. I didn't even know it but if my god was satan...I had to believe in God even if it is in a backhanded way.

Atheists aren't born that way as we all have an inborn drive to ackowledge their is a God. But somehow, they have supressed the truth. This could come because of a bad experience with a church/believer, indoctrination at school, or, a willful decision. We cannot convince or convict. Our task is to share what God has taught us on our journey,

No problem Kath. I am actually encouraged by the amount of former atheists, who now believe in the Lord our God. If any of you care to respond to what made you change your outlook. What brought you to the Lord?

...Playing 'devil's advocate' on this question... Have you ever thought about going to an Athiest site or a Pagan site and witnessing to them? You say: "But it does bother me that they feel the need to try to prove to us there is no God..." Do you ever think that it may bother them that you feel the need to prove to them that there is a God? I do agree that it's bad form to go to a specific religion's site for the sole purpose of proselytizing, but we've all known someone that has done this.

Have you ever thought about going to an Athiest site or a Pagan site and witnessing to them? Autumnbutterfly, Have I thought about it, yes. Have I done it, no. I do feel the need to spread the gospel as we are told to do. I just have an inkling of how I and the message of the Gospel would be received if I did. Maybe I should be on a pagan or atheist site preaching of the Lord. quote:
You say: "But it does bother me that they feel the need to try to prove to us there is no God..." Do you ever think that it may bother them that you feel the need to prove to them that there is a God? I am sure that it does bother them, but then again I don't go to their sites and preach at them(see above response). They come onto Christian sites, and preach against Him. What do they expect if they come on a Christian site, of course we are going to try to prove that there is a God to them. But God doesn't really need our help, all you need to do is just open your eyes to know that truth.

I'll tell you what puts me off: I am hurt when I find some Christians who think it is their duty to force their particular denominational view on other Christians instead of seeking to witness to and love the athiests to a personal relationship with the loving and forgiving God. We all have our pet views over some Scriptures, but none of these are going to matter when we stand before God on the day of judgment. I believe our witness is more powerful when we focus on the lost instead of trying to make sure other believers subscribe to our particular points of view. Jesus prayed that we would be one. They will know we are Christians by our love. Keep doing it for Jesus!

Thank you all so much for your insight. I am thankful for your advice. It has shed some light on this matter for me, and has led me to rethink what my purpose really is. Take care all, and thanks again.

w00t! I've always wanted to be annoying! Anyways, I've always said that I'm not going to push my crack on anyone as long as they don't push theirs on me. I'm more here to learn than to argue.

I do think there were some who did sign up with agendas. It doesn't hurt to go back and reaffirm your beliefs. I was tripped up for a while when interacting with them on another board. I went through a period of doubt and questioning everything I had previously believed. The circus atmosphere and touchy feely pablum being preached in churches today will reap a bitter harvest because too many people are not grounded in the basic doctrines of the faith. That is the one thing that has helped me sift through the confusion. I do know that Fritz and gang run a tight ship and keeps an eye on things.
