ddsisson -> May Flowers!! Homeschool Chat! (5/1/2008 12:15:45 AM)

Sorry not orginal, I know!! LOL But I couldn't think of anything else and I wanted to start the May Thread(I have never started one)

So school is just about over, what is everyones plans for Memorial Day Weekend and what are your summer plan?

ETA: Feel Free to change the Subject Line to something more creative.

Jenny-Fair -> RE: May Flowers!! (5/1/2008 12:22:09 AM)

Aw, crumb, I meant to start this thread, lol. Guess I am not quick as I ought to be.

Brandon has thrown another fit. He and Nate were squabbling and I told Brandon to give the remote back to Nate and I saw him throw it--not at Nate, but onto the couch Nate was on. Since I had said that anything more along those lines would get one sent to bed, I sent him to bed. However, he insisted on throwing a screaming fit the likes of which I have not seen since he was 3, all on how he had not thrown the remote and had not done anything wrong. In the end he found himself in bed and definitely not ungrounded, as he would have been come morning.

I truly don't know what to do with him some days.

cynthia -> RE: May Flowers!! (5/1/2008 12:25:12 AM)

That age can be very difficult for both the kids and the parents. I had an eight year old screaming at me in the street at 10:00 pm last night.

Jenny-Fair -> RE: May Flowers!! (5/1/2008 12:28:01 AM)

Oh, goodness!

My grandmother tells a story of when she was about that age and had gone up the road (they lived on a farm) to play with the neighbor girl when she knew she wasn't supposed to. When she came back her mom was in the middle of the road, hands on her hips. My grandmother tried to pull an end-run but no dice, and Nana caught her and gave her a whooping.

_Cinderella_ -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 1:59:28 AM)

Could we please add "homeschool chat" to the title of the opening post?

Congratulations, Debbie! I've never started a thread either. There have been times when I could have started one, and I couldn't think of a title line.[:)]

I'm working Memorial weekend. Summer plans include redoing the flower gardens in front of our house, Merv and Joe took out some overgrown bushes last fall. I'll probably work an extra day or two each week too if the staffing situation doesn't improve in the lab. Our vacation plans will be determined by Jake's graduations; Oklahoma in July, and Texas in early November.

zoebob -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 7:41:55 AM)

Last day of testing for DD2. One short test. The rest of us will sit in the library and wait for her before going to my 2 cleaning jobs and then back to the school for extended care and DS's t-ball practice. We will be gone for about 12 hrs. No idea what we will eat for dinner.

PrincessDonna -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 8:03:52 AM)

Okay, it's May. Can we consistently get above 30s and 40s now? It snowed here yesterday, though it didn't stick.[&:]

Memorial Day weekend...we are having a BBQ at Brian's stepdad and new step-mom's on Sunday. Memorial Day, Noah and Hannah will march in the parade with AWANA, and then we'll go to my parents' for a BBQ there. Nick will be with his mom that weekend, so we won't have to leave anywhere early. WOOHOO!

Noah goes to AWANA sparks camp this year. It's only for 2nd graders who have finished all three books, which he did by the skin of his teeth (closing is next Monday). I'm so proud of him...memorizing is very hard for him, especially since they insist it be done in KJV.

Thanks Sue. That is why I wasn't going to, my title was boring.

Memorial Weekends in the past we have gone camping, except the last few years. I doubt we will go this year. DH has been working a lot so things won't be much different from now, except the kids won't be doing school, at least until mid June.

June 14-24 Greg and Megan will be going to AZ again to the Indian Reservation that they went to last year.

Then in July the mission organization that our group is going to AZ with will be bringing a group here.

when is memorial day? I don't know what we are doing....but whatever it is we will be doing it alone and probably at home since I hate crowds

our plans today are Paul's surgery on his left knee....was supposed to be there at noon, but the dr forgot that he had a previous lunch engagement...so this afternoon he is getting him in first.

child4ever -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 10:14:06 AM)

May has got to be my favorite month of the year. I love no snow, and green and flowers and fresh air blowing through my windows. I love digging in the dirt and planting flowers, maybe a garden. FREEDOM.
I am also excited because the school year as we know it is almost "officially" over even though we do alot of unstructured learning in the summer. The things we have on our list to do for this month and the rest of the summer is doing a play with marinettes and learning to do hand shadows on the wall so well that we can put on a play or do a song or object lesson with them. So we are bringing an overhead projector home and at night, after it is dark we are going to perfect hand shadows on the wall. This could take all summer. We are really looking forward to doing these things. When the school year is in session we have to go to bed at a good time so we can get up in the morning and get our other school done. Not so in the summer.
We are also looking forward to taking a mess of kids to Prince Caspian on opening night May 16th.
Finally, we will wrap up the month, Memorial Day weekend and celebrate our oldest son's 21st birthday that weekend.

That's frustrating, but it will give us more time to pray.

ezri -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 10:44:50 AM)

Someone HAD to say May...

memorial day? Uh that's toward the end of the month right? Ask me again later K?

Dentist is today. 2 teensy fillings (another of those desensitize her to the environment visits). I ground my teeth last night while sleeping to the point of waking with that metalic blood taste in my mouth and my jaw is sore from it as well. [&o]

I have the script for the Valium filled and waiting. it said 1-2 tabs 30 min prior. Okay. I am 220lbs and they gave me 10mg of the liquid at the last appt and it BARELY put a dent in the fear and suffocating feeling. BUT after the appt and out of the building I promptly fell asleep and did not wake for almost 24 hours.

The tabs are 5mg each. Should I do 2 of them? I am thinking I should.

And in all of this I need to say that my Honey is "THE MAN" because he was able to get the appt moved (even if it was sooner) so that I did not have the dental at 3 and a photography Lighting trade show in town at 6 the same day.

his_chosen -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 11:00:50 AM)

ezri--have you tried listening to music? I used to have major panic attacks at the dentist. I let my teeth go, then needed a bunch of work done. The dentist was great, but I still was a basket case! One time I brought my walkman and listened to worship music. That made all the difference in the world! Its taken several years, but I'm now to the point of just not liking going.

Testing is ALMOST done!

I went for an early morning ride then run. I've hit 1000m on the bike for this season! Running is still coming along slowly, though.

Ellie-Mae--what are the plans for the FOT race? I mean fun run...

shadowspring -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 11:02:21 AM)

Reminder: be in prayer for Ellie-Mae today. Check prayer thread for details. [:)]

Yay! We received the info package for our 4-H summer exchange student from Japan!

I have hosted four foreign exchange students so far, and the 4-H is the easiest and looks to be the most fun. We are not expected to "show them as much of the US as our budget allows" (Rotary Club Exchange). Plus it is only for four weeks of summer, not a semester or school year (CIEE).

We are only expected to love them and care for them as one of our own, taking them to church, our usual summer activities, giving them chores along with the rest of the family.

They do ask that I do her laundry! LOL That's one of the kids chores: do your own laundry. I guess I'll have to call the office on that one.

Her name is Mai, she is fifteen and she likes to play basketball. Should be fun! [:D]

(Now I have to finish packing for vacation- but I wanted to share my excitement about Mai and my concern for Ellie-Mae [sm=icon_smile_bow.gif])

VisitorinWaiting -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 11:03:12 AM)

My kids are driving me BONKERS today. During school time, they both looked at me like I was a stranger from another planet for things that I KNOW that they know. Doesn't this just frustrate you to no end? I have one being much more loud than he needs to be because apparently, he's frustrated about something too...one that just wants to sit on the couch with a pillow and watch cartoons, and a little one who had surgery last week and is in her bed being cranky. This is gonna be one of those days... To top it off, hubby is at work alone, as the workers who usually work with him duing the day are on an mini-vacation...so I have to take all of them out to get his check, deposit it, and then pick up something for him for lunch... I am hoping that getting out of the house will make them calm down some...although today, I doubt it... I think I should have been a stow-away for the mini-vacation that hubby's co-workers took.

Spring fever? Maybe a romp in the park would help? The weather is incredibly awesome here today.

I want to go play, and I don't even really like the outdoors that much! (Allergies.)

Maybe so. I just took a step outside to BREATHE. It's really nice out there. I will have to leave any minute to get to hubby's work...and with one in a cast, it will be hard to let them all play at a park or something...maybe when we get back home, they can play in the backyard.

Argh...hubby just called to let me know info about today, and we had to hang up because they were
"barking/growling" loudly at one another... Great, now they have turned into animals. Does that I mean I can put them out?! LOL

Jenny-Fair -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 11:48:28 AM)

Well, we don't even test until late summer, lol, so our summer plans are very similar to today's plans--school, chores, mow the lawn at a grandparent's house, eat. A lot of our plans are up in the air because neither Brandon nor I know about our jobs yet, plus who knows what their father will pull, etc.

I am not feeling so great this morning.

zoebob -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 12:07:38 PM)

DD is done testing. YAY!!

Bagel -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 12:10:04 PM)

As far as I know, we have no plans for Memorial Day weekend, or the summer. My son will be having his testing later on this month, and he'll turn 10.

On another note, Dh came home from work, with a newly pierced ear. I think that my Dd is having a harder time with it than anyone else. It doesn't really bother me, it's just weird to see it on him. Since I have two piercings in each ear, I told him that I was still "Holier than thou". Dh got a chuckle out of that. I'm thinking that now, since he has to be careful as to what kind of earring he buys for that ear, that maybe he'll be a more careful shopper when he buys earrings for me.

Jenny-Fair -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 12:17:06 PM)

Zoebob, how did it go for your DD? I know you don't have the scores yet, but was she comfortable and calm?

his_chosen -> RE: May Flowers Homeschool Chat!! (5/1/2008 12:39:04 PM)

WE HAVE BABIES!!!!! A robin built a nest on our deck. There are four eggs. I was so concerned that she wasn't sitting on the nest enough because every time we use the back door, she'd leave the nest. And with four boys... Some days, she wouldn't come back all day. I just checked the nest (mirror on a stick). Two eggs have hatched, one has just started. The babies look strong, as one was upright with its beak open.
