In running circles, Ibuprofen is called "vitamin I". We all take it from time to time...

Situation with the kids has been resolved. Dh came home early to deal with it. He only does that when the kids are really in trouble.

I have a friend whose husband is a police officer. She called him a couple times due to a disobedient son. Dad showed up in full uniform and spanked him. The mother said it was quite effective, but he did have to do it once more. After that, the problem was solved.

Mr. Manly's behavior has been improving. He got done with school on time today. He hasn't done that in, well, maybe never. I didn't know what to do with myself.

Oh and good news to report for DD2. She has been fighting learning her basic multiplication facts. I mean we spent 2 months and she still couldn't do it. So instead I printed a multiplication table and had her start doing 3 digit times 1 digit and then 2 digit times 2 digit and she does great with that and even asked for another worksheet yesterday. I let her use the multiplication table but she usually gets them in her head. I knew she probably knew it but just couldn't get it out. Now that she's just using those facts she does OK with it.

Mr. Manly is working on his multiplication facts too. He's doing okay. Math-U-See doesn't do them from 1-10. It starts with zero, then one, then ten, then either two or five, and I can't remember the order from there. Basically he does the easiest ones first and by the time they get to the more difficult facts, they have already memorized them with some of the easier numbers already. I like that approach. He's actually been doing fairly well in math this year and is half way through the third grade book, which is good, since he's just finishing up second grade. If I hadn't of put him back a year, he would be half a year behind, but this way he is half a year ahead and may be able to avance enough to eventually skip a grade and be back where he would have been if he had cooperated from the beginning. I haven't told him this, but with his continuing improvements in attitude, I think we will probably be able to do that.

DD didn't do them all in order either. I think 1,2, 10, 5, 3, 4, 9, 6. We hadn't done too long with 7 and 8. Even though she knew all but a few (6 was still a struggle) she thought she still had to learn 20 or more. Even though she understands that 7X3=3X7 she still was convinced she had a lot more to learn.

DS just started with the concept of multiplication this week too.

His/Hazel - we've had to get to this point too! It was a lot easier when dh only worked a few minutes away because we lived on base. They know it's serious when he comes home early to deal with them. I've tried to figure out if it's the male thing that they respond to better (firmness, deeper voice etc...) or if it's just that he's not the one home all the time dealing with them. But they really get it better when he deals with them.

Dd struggled with the multiplication facts too (so did I when I was her age). We focused solely on that for 6 weeks or so with a workbook that taught her little tricks to learn them. Some tricks helped - others didn't, but now that we're back to doing her regular Math (Abeka), she's doing really well. In fact, we are whipping through it because we're only doing new concepts with a page or so of review stuff & she's still doing well on quizzes & tests. Her biggest problem is that if the answer doesn't pop into her head immediately, she says "I don't know" or "I can't do this". I have to get her to stop & think about it. I've told her that I don't want to hear her say those phrases anymore until she's thought for a while about it. She seems to think I expect her to answer immediately. I told her that some problems I couldn't even answer immediately without thinking about it first!! I know sometimes I come across as a little impatient to her & it does frustrate me when I know she knows it & she can't seem to get it out. So, I'm trying to really focus on checking how I say things & making sure I don't add to her frustration. I can definitely relate to her struggles - although she is very different than me in many ways, math struggles is one thing we share. I really thought I was stupid in Math for the longest time & I don't want her to go through that!!

Today, we actually don't have anywhere we HAVE to go!!! We may try to hit the Library later this afternoon, but we have schoolwork, LOTS of laundry to fold & some serious straightening up to do! Dh forgot that they have a men's fellowship tonight & ds has Karate, so we will probably wait until tomorrow to go see the new Narnia movie!! We have a new theater here (I'm hoping it's playing there). It is supposed to be HUGE (not in # of theaters but in the size of each one) & the sound is awesome from what I've heard. They have balconies that are for 21 & up only, because there is a bar & you can get "real" food like Chicken & Rice. Of course, balcony tickets are $16 each! Don't think it'd be worth that! Although someone mentioned that you wouldn't have to worry about sitting in front of a group of rowdy teenagers! Hmmm - might be worth it. Although, some of the obnoxious people we've had the pleasure of sitting by in the movies were adults and if said adults had a few drinks in them - I think I'd choose the group of teenagers!!

ETA:

Happy Anniversary Julia!!!!

Actually, he was at our house working on his car at that time. So he was visiting his bio grandparents? I couldn't figure out who Brian was talking about.

Cynthia, I hope you celebrated in some way too!

I miss doing math with Noah. He has mentioned several times that math is boring at school, because he had to go back a book. I think in the end though, he'll just have a stronger foundation for next year, and his speed with addition and subtraction facts has definitely increased with all the drill games they do.

Hannah is on a big question kick. I don't remember the boys being this observant this young! Last night, she asked me where God is, and we had a very long discussion about it. She is also learning all about childbirth and probably knows more about pregnancy than some grownups! I'm so excited for her to be at this baby's birth. Her job is the announcer...as in, "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!"

Happy Anniversary Julia!!!

Donna, considering Levi's birth, the announcer has a very important job!

Jennifer, sorry about the paycheck. Does the temp agency usually get the check to you right away, or can if vary by job?

I taught multiplication differently to each kid!

*ds1 was in school, and we did flash cards. He hated it, but it was required, and I had to sign off on it. THey also did timed tests, which he always did poorly. It was more a time pressure than not knowing his facts

*ds2 we made a chart. We used cusinare rods. Three 3's is the same as one 9. Then as he was mastering facts, I'd let him use the chart.

*ds3 I don't remember. Some how he learned 'em... I think we used flash cards. First the answer side, then the qustion side. I think. I don't really remember!

*ds4 we used playing cards. Anything with a game theme and ds4 is game!

I didn't do my workout this morning. I got up when the alarm went off (5:30) then promptly had the worst diarrhea. I ended up passed out on the bathroom floor! Uh, don't think going to the pool was in my best interest! So I went back to bed and slept until 9:30. I don't remember the last time I slept that late!
