Your deacon is a wonderful example as to why I don't like to bother people with my issues. Sometimes common sense takes a vacation with even the best intentions.

You are a DEACON, for cryin' out loud. If you wonder what's going on with my lawn, you could MOW it, you know!!!

This guy really needs to read the job manual. Deacon= Takes care of widows and orphans in the church. (among other things)

Infuriating.

Ditto. But sadly not really surprising.

(Ahem...I'm a deacon.)

doinkdom -> RE: Who Ya Gonna Call..? (5/1/2008 3:17:40 PM)

When I was single...my dad would come over for major repair things that were beyond me. Course, I tried to struggle through a couple of things on my own.

He had one rule and that was I had to assist him. That way, if it happened again, I would at least have a clue about what to do so when he's gone, I could handle it.

My dad made sure that I could change my own oil and knew how to use basic tools before I was 18. He was determined that I not have to depend on anyone unnecessarily who may take advantage.

That wasn't a blanket statement about all deacons. There are some good ones but in my experience the ones who do a poor job far outnumber the ones who do a good job.

(Deaconess. I'm old school when it comes to language)

So why weren't you out there mowing besiderself's lawn?

Huh. Why not Huh!!![:D][:D]

My comments, as you know, were directed towards that one particular deacon.

In many churchs the deacons have come to view themselves as "masters of the church" instead of "servants of the church". This is a problem.

One of mine fits the poor job! I had missed Sunday bible study for about 1 month straight as I was just soooo worn out tired so Mr. Bright Ideas asked if it would help me if he called me an 1.5 hrs before hand so that I could wake up on time[sm=angertalk.gif][sm=angertalk.gif] What makes it worse is that he knows that I work 50hrs a week at my real job 6hrs a week at the church for children's ministries and have 2 full-time kids one of which is about to be a teenager!!!

mutinywxgirl -> RE: Who Ya Gonna Call..? (5/1/2008 3:26:15 PM)

Thank you! (I still call female actors actresses and female waitstaff waitresses. Nothing wrong with a feminine ending.)

I didn't think you were directing your comment at all deacons, just doing a little poking. [:D]

Deacons should definitely be servants of the church. Absolutely! By all means! At the same time, that doesn't prevent other members of the church from being servants as well.

I really like the idea of "handy-man" ministries. There would be a group of people that everyone in the church would know they could call, even just for advice.

Although the stewardesses sometimes get upset at being called stewardesses. (and yes I call the male ones stewards)

This is true. We should all be servants. I also like the handy-man ministries. I think it would be a huge help to the church and even a huge tool for church growth. (You have better results "showing " yourself to be Christian than by "telling" people you're Christian. They need to see Christ in us.

(Edited to fix typo)

I'd try to fix it, but if I couldn't I'd call family members.

Don't know. I never wanted to take the risk to try it.[:D][:D]

(Actually I could but I don't chew gum. The last time I chewed a pieec of gum was last summer when the Pastor's wife (Sister Angie) had me in a bubble blowing contest with the kids. I couldn't blow a bubble if my life depended on it. But Sister Angie has the gift of ruling. No one says no to her. (But she does it is such an incredibly nice way) )
