From something Tink said on another thread, apparently one of the grumpy old men.

Well, you've brought up a rant, dear Nadine;

I will call my Dad--but I liked how you described it: it's like asking him to take a break from running the world. And for big things, I do call him because I have to. But that's no guarantee that anything will be accomplished.

But I long ago gave up on him and every other male in my family and church as far as help with smaller things like changing light bulbs or filters or hanging stuff.

And the church...oh, don't get me started on the church. I think I may have mentioned here once the story of the deacon who drove by my house everyday, saw my lawn becoming higher and higher, and when my lawn was mentioned in a conversation, he said

"Yeah, I saw that and wondered what the deal was."

DUH!!!

The DEAL, dude, is that I'm a widow with four children (three of them are girls and they are busy, too) two part time jobs and going to school full time. My father, as helpful as he is, is nearly 80 years old.

You are a DEACON, for cryin' out loud. If you wonder what's going on with my lawn, you could MOW it, you know!!!

So I've learned to get it done myself or do without.

besiderself

Esther my friend, we really do need to sit down and chat over a cup of Joe...When are you coming? The Doors open, come anytime.

When I was single...my dad would come over for major repair things that were beyond me. Course, I tried to struggle through a couple of things on my own.

He had one rule and that was I had to assist him. That way, if it happened again, I would at least have a clue about what to do so when he's gone, I could handle it.

My dad made sure that I could change my own oil and knew how to use basic tools before I was 18. He was determined that I not have to depend on anyone unnecessarily who may take advantage.

My Dad did insist I learn how to change a tire and jump a battery before I could drive. But that was about it.

So your single again or just moved out on your own, and there are things that come up that you don't know how to do or have never done because there was always someone else in your life to do it, Husband, Dad, or Brother. Sooo

Who Ya Gonna Call?

What is is that you do? Do you call a friend? your Dad? Look it up on the internet and try to figure it out yourself. Pay a handy man? Mickey mouse your way through it? or like me....leave it undone? I now have so many lights burned out in my house, that I move a small lamp from place to place. They are really high up and I have already fallen once. Okay, I know your not as helpless as me now But before you got so self sufficient What did you do?

This is not just a girl thing. I'm sure some of you guys have been in a similar situation wondering, what would she have done if she were still here.
What do you do?

Great questions. Sometimes I call my dad, but he's not too keen on helping with around-the-house stuff anymore. And he won't take the time to explain how to do it -- he either does it himself (if it's urgent or uber-expensive) or tells me to call someone. Always done with *why-don't-you-get-married-so-I-don't-have-to-do-your-work glare*. I don't have a big brother, and my cousins are all busy with their families, so I don't really even know how to call a guy to help with anything.

I've learned to do a lot of things on my own. I can do simple repair on a lawnmower or a lamp, change fuses on a car, change a tire, create a simple patio, refinish furniture, and more. It's a pretty good, albeit lonely, feeling.

Don't know. I never wanted to take the risk to try it.

(Actually I could but I don't chew gum. The last time I chewed a pieec of gum was last summer when the Pastor's wife (Sister Angie) had me in a bubble blowing contest with the kids. I couldn't blow a bubble if my life depended on it. But Sister Angie has the gift of ruling. No one says no to her. (But she does it is such an incredibly nice way) )

I thought my husband was the only adult who couldn't blow a bubble. I mean seriously my kids would roll on the floor laughing to see him try.
I'm laughing just thinking about it.

Like Adriana, I live in a condo complex, and the association takes care of outdoor maintenance. I don't have too much problem with indoor myself. I don't have family anymore to call. When I do need advice or help, or even just comfort, I do feel fortunate to have very good friends in my ministry partners, who are husband and wife. I consider them my honorary big brother and sister.

(Ahem...I'm a deacon.)

That wasn't a blanket statement about all deacons. There are some good ones but in my experience the ones who do a poor job far outnumber the ones who do a good job.

One of mine fits the poor job! I had missed Sunday bible study for about 1 month straight as I was just soooo worn out tired so Mr. Bright Ideas asked if it would help me if he called me an 1.5 hrs before hand so that I could wake up on time[sm=angertalk.gif] What makes it worse is that he knows that I work 50hrs a week at my real job 6hrs a week at the church for children's ministries and have 2 full-time kids one of which is about to be a teenager!!!

This would just about put me over the edge.

Ditto.

Although, I must admit, when water leaked all over my kitchen floor in February, I called my lawn maintenance guy to ask where the water shut off for my house was. I figured he walks all over my yard more than me, and thus, would know where it might be found. He didn't know, came by, and couldn't find it. He did figure out where the leak was and called a plumber. In the meantime, I called my neighbor whom I know has a carpet shampooer and asked to borrow it. Since this guy is my pastor, he not only brought it over, he used it for me.

So, I guess it's not quite that I call no one, I just have to wait for a desperate situation like a water leak before others are really willing to come help.

I very much agree though, asking is very difficult.

Yup!! I did have some help in preparing the site, laying the frame, and filling in the sand. But I was able to level the sand and lay the patio bricks by myself. That's the extent of what I've done so far. I want to add a trellis to the West side to block some of the stronger light, then maybe I can grow some container plants. But this is a rental place, so I'm not going to do much more than that. I'm toying with the idea of buying a fixer-upper sometime down the road... I do love Bungalow houses and if I can find one in reasonable shape, my dream is to have a large flower and vegetable garden combined throughout the yard. Now, if I could find someone to partner with me... even better.

I saw a really cool portable trellis in a magazine or online some where. It had pots on each side to plant whatever it is you want to climb the trellis. I have rented for years..until now so it was something I was looking into before I came here. I could try to find it if you are interested.

Ooh, definitely! Thanks!! The only thing stopping me from the project earlier is that I don't have someone who can help me put it up, so portable would be perfect!

I did too, but I did not use enough sand as the base so it has settled.

Edited to add,

First . . . I absolutely Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon!
And as a team, they were beyond fantastic.

As to the OP . . . great topic, Nadine.

And one that hits a few very current nerves.
. . . which probably needs a bit of background to make any sense.

My mother died when I was 10. My father responded by going deeper into alcoholism (both my parents were, in fact, practicing alcoholics). Because of his drinking, I was pretty much often left to myself . . . and consequently I had to figure out a lot of things on my own (many of which are not appropriate to discuss in this thread; and I only mention that -as gently as possible- to underline that I'm not exaggerating).

My father died when I was 26. We had the most beautiful year prior to his death. However, he never quit drinking. He was a great handy man, but I never asked him to do anything specifically for me. Periodically, he would come over to wherever I was living (while I was at work) to look around and see if anything needed doing, but I can't remember ever actually asking him to do anything for me. It just wasn't something that was part of our relationship (as an example, I never even told him about the seizures; the first one of those happening two years before he died, nor did I tell him about other health situations I was experiencing at the time).

I've either always done something myself or hired someone to do it for me. When I've lived in apartment complexes and if something was apartment-related, I'd call Maintenance and have them do whatever it was (sometimes; often I still just did it myself).

I don't have any family. That's a complete sentence in and of itself. It's not a matter of not having any family "near me"; I don't have any family "anywhere."

It's never occurred to me to ask anyone for help with things. It wasn't until recently (as within the past few years) that I even realized people actually did that.

Being an independent woman is sometimes a double-edge sword. It seems to upset a lot of people (either via annoyance, exasperation or sadness for or towards me), in the fact that people want to help me; yet it is still such a foreign concept to me for me to ask someone to do something for me or to accept their offers when such are made. Hire someone; yes; but ask / allow someone as a favor? No.

This independence is also practically the only thing I've ever known (in regards to the OP); certainly for at least the first 37 years of my life and even quite often during these most recent past few years. I get tickled to pieces when I ask Our Lord to help me do something that I've never done or that is seemingly to much for me to do by myself . . . and I do it; and do it right. I figure that God gave me a brain so I should use it, and I've also literally have prayed for Our Lord's strength when doing things beyond my physical capabilities (and/or for Our Lord's Wisdom and Guidance when trying to figure out the right way to accomplish a task).

I think that Our Lord is trying to teach me how to bring a balance to this; to retain my independence but yet to relinquish it at times, as well. This particular journey / life lesson has been quite illuminating, to say the least.

I'm not sure if this thread was meant for fun or fun seriousness. But at the moment, it's a pretty serious topic for me.

Thanks for listening y'all.

Be blessed.

Generally for plumbing, appliance repair and electrical issues, I call my brother. He is in town often enough and lived here for a long time so he knows where all the shut off valves are in the house and what kind of breakers I need. Also, my brother is skilled in appliance repair.

I pretty much do this as a last resort. I can't stand his attitude or cursing, to be honest.

I just paid for that $5 a month coverage of inside wires so the next time something happens, I can call the electric company.

For bugs, I go to Wal-Mart and buy an industrial size can of Raid and ant baits in case the spray doesn't work.

For lawnmower stuff, I called my brother-in-law. And called. And called again. I am still waiting ....

If I ever get any money to do the things that NEED to be done around here ... includinging the replacement of the back door and the siding, I'll call in the appropriate contractors.

For light bulbs ... I get out my ladder or put a phone book and a dictionary on top of a chair.

I generally look in the phone book and see who can come in and give me free estimates on a lot of maintenance jobs.

For other things that are simple, I call up a friend and have him do it and give him a gift card for his time and effort on trying to help.
