his chosen, enjoy your running now because the joints in your knees and hips will start to deteriorate in 5 to 10 years. The pool water you now swim in on a consistent basis will most likely give you cancer. I wish I had the motivation you have. But just remember, there is no substitution for good nutrition. I think god wants you to motivate other people to get out and exercise. Keep up the good work.

You could go camping and get eaten by a hungry black bear too.

Or I could go swimming in the ocean and get eaten by a shark.

Sounds like a treadmill is a lot safer.

Okay, I'll have to tell Grandma. She raced 5 and 10K's into her 70's. She bicycled into her 80's. She also swam into her 80's. Think of all the damage she did to her body. She's 92 but you would never guess it. Grandpa probably shouldn't have been out running 10 miles six days a week either. Maybe he would have lived longer than 90.

I prefer open water swimming. I suppose there's terrible things in open water, too???

Shouldn't the focus be on encouraging people to participate in regular exercise, rather than tell them that they HAVE to ride a bike?

People that wont use a gym membership wont use stuff they buy and put in their house either. But if you're even halfway serious, a home gym either has to be really well set up and deckd out or you'll get bored and/or outgrow it pretty fast. A bike and a few dumbells alone really wont accomplish much.

You might be using the gym 5 or 6 times a week now. But in 5 years you probably wont be.

Why, whats going to change over the next five years that hasn't over the last 33 years?

What I am saying is to find out what you like to do. Cycling, walking, running, hiking, sking, surfing etc.

Honestly, going to the gym during the week is what "allows" me to enjoy those things, and others, on the weekend (and vacations).

I think gyms are great but they are useless if you are not working out.

Sure, but buying a road bike is also useless if you are not using it.

You have to ask yourself this question.
Will I be using this gym once or twice a week for the rest of my life? If the answer is yes then sign up at the best gym out there. If the answer is no then dont waist your time. I say keep your exercise simple. How did people stay fit 2000 years ago? They walked and hiked everywhere. Right? There is your answer.

I understand your point, but it's a tad extreme. How did people eat 2000 years ago, is that also our answer? How did they dress 2000 years ago? Is that also our answer?

Go rent the movie Into the Wild. Then go shopping at REI or Sports Chalet and you will never think of another Gym again.

Actually, I found McCandless somewhat foolish. And found it ironic that he chose an abandoned bus as his last resting place, rather than under a tree.

I like what I see here on this thread.... different strokes for different folks.
Running, biking, lifting, yoga, pilates, swimming... it's all good.
At home, outside, inside, your own gym, commercial gym, Christian gym, it's all good!
Couch potato....all bad!
At least a couple folks agree that a "Christian gym" would be a good idea,
My original concept started there and then I found all kinds of other Christian sports and activities links. I just want to encourage all the brethren involved in these things, and provide resources to those looking for this kind of thing.
If you think fellowshipping with other Christians while participating in a sport or fitness activity is silly, That's OK, too. To each his/her own.
