I am a person who turned to the Bible not too long ago. I have been reading both the New and Old Testament, and I dont like the Old Testament. I love the New Testament, with the arrival of Christ. It seems to me as Christians we should only worship the New Testament, because thats when Christianity started. Isnt the Old one also the torrah of the jews who denied Christ? How can us as Christians believe in that. I also find the Old Test alot more violent and unforgiving than the New one. People such as Moses participated in killings and wars, and issued rituals of sacrificing animals at the altars of worship. Jesus never did or advocate that. He was perfect. Why do we include the Old Testament in the bible?

I've been a believer for 41 years and I have never worshipped either testament, only God.

The same God that inspired the Old inspired the New. You cannot properly understand or fully appreciate the New until you've read the Old. It is the foundation on which the New rests.

And Jesus can be seen all throughout the Old. Read Psalm 22 and ask yourself WHO it describes.

I agree with Jimbo 100%.

Christ quoted the OT. Paul explains the OT. Hebrews is not understandable without Leviticus. The OT reveals God and therefore is needed to show more about Christ since they are one. Christianity didn't start with the NT. It started when God created Man and there was a relationship to be had between them. Judiasm didn't start until after Abraham.

The Jews who denied Christ got mixed up in their interpretations of the OT and staked their salvation on the idol they had made of a Civil Messiah. It's not the fault of the OT that it was mistaken by sinful men.

God in the OT is wrathful and jealous. Make no mistake about it that Jesus is one with the God. Jesus will Judge the world. Also, don't mistake that God in the OT was loving and gracious, wanting the hearts of men to be devoted to Him so He could show loving kindness. Again, the same thing is true of Christ. The wrath is because of men's disobedience, not because God is different.

Read more of the OT and intentionally look for the love of God. It's spread throughout. Look at the NT and intentionally look for the wrath of God. You'll find it.

Responding to your edits: Jesus participated in something far worse than animal sacrifice: He gave Himself for us.

Because Jesus was not in the military or leading an army does not make war and battle wrong.

I can appreciate your struggle. But the Old Testament is a very important part of God's revelation to us and the New Testament (and especially Christ) cannot be fully understood apart from it. So just continue to read, worship (not the Bible but the Lord), and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you and guide you into ALL truth. He is the best teacher you could ever have or need. He will reveal to you the importance of all of the Old Testament and in time, you will find it more of the beautiful and wonderful and glorious revelation of God. Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! Romans 11:33 Be patient. You cannot have the OLD without the NEW. And I do not worship either Testament I worship God.

God created the Earth in the Old Testament.

God created Man and Woman in the Old Testament.

There is a reason for the violence God was trying to make the World new...Wash it of it Sin...Wash US from our Sin.

Reading the OT opened up my eyes on how powerful, how holy and how righteous our God is. The OT also reveals how wretched people are, how foolish people are. I mean, God is right there with His people, in their midst in a form of a cloud by day, and a pillar by night when He delivered them out of Egypt yet they still fell away. They saw with their own eyes, all the miracles of God yet they still ended worshipping idols. God revealed Himself so much to His people....and they still disobeyed.

The OT reveals how merciful and faithful God is. Even though Abraham screwed up and tried to fulfill God's promise his way, God still kept His promise. Through Abraham a nation was born. God used a whining coward like Moses who had to have his brother Aaron come along with him to talk to the Pharaoh about freeing Israel. King David was a war monger, a murderer and an adulterer, yet God still used him. It was through David's bloodline that our Savior Jesus Christ was born.

There is much blood-shed and violence in the OT due to human disobedience to God. The OT has shown me how human, how imperfect people are, and just how much we need the Savior.

The more I read the OT, the more I see God's righteousness, and human foolishness.

There is great knowledge and insights in the Old Testament. Proverbs are excellent. Psalms are heartfelt. Genesis is the beginning..always important in any work. The law describes what sin is. Without the law we would not understand the bad.

The great stories of Joseph, Moses and Abraham. There are so many. Jonah, Jeremiah all the kings, David, Solomon.....all great stuff.

Yep, reading through Leviticus and Deuteronomy can be a little tough but there is value there too.

You can't understand the perfection of our Lord Jesus without knowing what made Him be perfect. What prophecies He fulfilled to be called Messiah and these are in the Old Testament....hundreds of them.

Since the mystery of scripture is fulfilled at Pentecost NT amplifies and blossoms(fleshes out)the OT. When one read the OT always keeping in mind the obedience/sacrifice/Victory of Jesus it comes alive!

Hello there NY74,

There are some really great answers already posted, but I thought that you might like additional input.

The OT hold many issues/doctrines which are explained and one of them is the doctrine of the Old Covenant (blood sacrifice of animals for acts of human sin). The NT does the same thing, as it explains the New Covenant (and many other doctrines), which was made by Christ on the Cross (and His Resurrection; 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11).

They are both important to a Christian.

I rely much more on the New Testament because all of it is pertinant to living our lives as Christians.

If I was going somewhere to evangelize and could only take one or the other; it would definately be the New Testament that I would take.

When I was a new Christian, I very much relied on the NT as well.

Now that I've been a Christian for awhile, I am finding that I rely on the OT a lot too.

I probably would too, but I would miss my OT.

Isn't it awesome how both show the wonderful love and sacrifice that our Lord has made for us time and time again?

I also agree with Jimbo. You can not fully appreciate the NT without the OT. There are so many great lessons to be learned in the OT. I also like reading the NT more than the OT, but I thank God for all that I have learned from the OT. You can't really appreciate why Jesus came until you understand the need for Him to, which is laid out in the OT.

By the way the Torah is only the first 5 books, which were written by Moses. And no we should not worship the bible.

I used to feel sort of like you. I just thought the OT was history so why bother, but oh, now I realize how very rich the OT is with truths that point the way to Jesus. Bible Studies like Beth Moore,s A Woman's Heart taught me all about the tabernacle the forerummer of the heavenly temple which pointed the Jews to the need for a savior. I used to think reading about the tabernacle in Exodus, Numbers and Deuteronomy was a drag. Now I love it. I am doing a Beth Moore study this summer on the Patrirchs which I am most anxious to start. I encourage you to find a good Bible study on the OT and begin a new journey of understanding of who God/Jesus really is, How God gave us authority to rule over the earth, how we lost it, which leads us to the NT and how we got it back. To me, our authority we have through the power of the Holy Spirit because of Jesus's death and surrection and how we apply His authority over the enemy is what our christian walk is all about.

Jesus enters holy scripture at word 4 of the book of Genesis. We have 1 God. He is obviously part of and inspired all the books of the bible and is found right at the end in Revelations. The Old Testament can be tough, but i agree with everyone above, the New Testament, makes like sense and has much less POWER without the Old Testament.

But reading it is differcult at first and i'd suggest to begin with to spend more time in the New Testament, perhaps even read it all first. Make sure you have a translation where the english speaks to you. We all talk differently, and need the same language in our reading that we speak in ourselves.

Please believe what you are reading. It is history, not myth. Miracles for example. God/ Jesus wrote the rules of nature/ science - it is no differculty for him to change or break those rules. Jesus' teachings are given in love. I may not like some of them, but i acknowledge that is my sinful nature trying to lead me on satan's path - i must obey and work to become Holy. God is all loving and has no lies or sin in him. I need to change - not change what God/ the bible says. Love BibleBased.
