BibleBased -> MATTHEW 6: 25-34 - meaning, belief & act? (5/5/2008 3:09:06 PM)

To me the meaning of these verses is simple. But do we believe them and more important are we going to act on them?
Love BibleBased.

OK, I'll bite. This is the passage my family reads every Havdalah (the sundown ending the Sabbath) to thank Adonai for providing "sufficiant and abundantly more than we could ever think or ask." Then we eat of the bread remaining from before Erev Shabbat (the sundown starting Shabbat). This may seem to be a silly ritual to some, but it serves to remind use on a weekly basis of Adonai's provision.

That's lovely, but what do you get from these verses?

Perhaps i need to add some fat to my OP and then people can see what i'm getting at.

Why are christians continually worrying about the things of this world? Must earn more money, get a bigger house, another car? Why are they complaining over wills/ inheritances like non believers.
My point is they don't believe these verses and definitely won't apply them/ live their lives by them. Look at verse 33....

Matthew 6:33 But more than anything else, put God's work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well.

Are you puting God's work first? Do you even know what God's work is?

If you have a modest home buying or renting, food and drink to sustain you, and modest clothes - why are you not using the rest of your money on doing God's work? If you get a pay rise do you think great more for God's work, or do you think i can buy x or y or z that i've WANTED for a long time.
Do you live in a nice road? Do your children have seperate bedrooms? Does your baby have it's own room? Do you like eating out? Going to the theatre/ cinema.
I am not suggesting we should live as monks/ nuns in cells and eat bread and drink water. Although we could all probably learn something from doing this for one week a year? But is your giving like that of the PHARISEES of you excess wealth, or like that of the widow who Jesus praised for giving all she had.

Before someone replies i have a family and responsibilities - many of us do! Does that mean you can revert to living like the pharisees and buy lots of lovely things, BEFORE doing God's work? God actually wants you to set them a bad unbiblical example!

I sometimes wounder why some people read the bible, because they either want to ignore it or find loop holes and teach against it, like the ultra religious of Jesus's day.

Jesus tells us many times that the wicked wealth of this world, is to be used in his Work. Satan wants you to spend it on yourself, your family and friends. He wants you to ignore the sick, the dying, the lonely, those in prison.

Most of all SATAN the DEVIL wants you to keep the good news to yourself. Are you getting out there and talking to non believers? Or do you say well i mention it at work, they know i'm a Christian. That's lovely but what have you actually taught them? Have you got into differculty for talking about your faith? Has your job been threatened for example. Or at the first uncomfortable word, do you shut up and let the devil win again.

My guess is like every brother/ sister i have ever met, all readers will teach against these passages, or say it's a standard beyond our reach. Listern TRUSTING God to provide even the basics is beyond us! Actually living our lives to first SAVE non believers is beyond us! I MUST put the job i do first, with it's good salery, and presents for my children and that bigger house and second car.
Could your family live on you working one less hour a week? Would you give that one hour to Christ Jesus? Times that by all christians and we have real serious mission time! Could you move into a smaller house or flat? My family of 7, lives in a 3 bed rented house. If so that money could go on mission material - thousands in most cases. If you had only one car, could you work out a scedual of useage? Holidays/ trips, days/ evenings out. Could you half your time out and instaed perhaps invite a needy church member to your house, or a non believer?

Folks we are squandering the resources God has given us. And that does not just mean money. God's work of converting non believers actually costs nothing. We all have at least one bible. We all know unsaved people. Share God's Word with a non believer every day, not just once a week.

I now fully expect to be told i don't understand these verses, i usually am! That God's work is just occassionally mentioning Christianity in passing in daily life, not getting out and WORKING for him. That we don't have much spare money, we need the house we have, all our material possessions. To update our car, computer, our clothes. Our food bill is the basics, with so few nice things they hardly notice. Please don't do it to yourself. Think before you reply. God is with us always. Tell the truth. You have money, time and many other resources that God has freely given you - but you refuse to use them in his service. Love BibleBased.

God is faithful, God is Good and God will provide.

I believe the point of these passages is to remind us that God acts. That God is in control. And because He is, we do not need to worry.

But we do worry...why?

Because we forget. We forget that God is in control. We forget that the Christian life is not about us and what we are doing, but that the Christian life is Christ. We worry because we forget that we are not alone, we forget that we are indwelt by the One who created all that there is.

When we focus on ourselves we miss what God is doing, and we miss what the Holy Spirit is trying to do through us.

It is impossible to have faith and worry at the same time. Jesus is always reminding us to walk in Him, by faith, just as we received Him; to humbly accept that He lives in us, and to have faith that He will work in and through us as we continue in our walk together.

Jesus does not give us strength...He is our strength. Is there any situation that may come up in our life that is too hard for God? Is there anything that is too hard for God?

Thank you Jesus.

Peace

Though all of my ansestors have passed away, I have recieved no inheretance except a few sticks of furniture. This is because they and my contemparary relatives were/are focused on their own personal comfort and not their responsibilities to Adonai. I am not bitter. I am gratefuil for what Adonai provides even though many consider me to be a fool. However, I believe, when the reality sets in I will be better able to handle it. I say this because I truly believe we are living in the best of times economically in the USA. We can not expect this prosperity to last forever.

Sadly all i see is self professing christians, who will pay cash to avoid tax, employ people in their spare time so their company doesn't get the money. Spend hours on computers.

My wife said to me the other day 'I've never met a Christian.' Now she is a non believer, but has read the new testament. She's had 10 years of me daily discussing every book of the bible and every commentary and book i've read, every topic i've posted on.
She doesn't mean that she's never met anyone who believes in the death and resurrection of Christ, because she knows i do.

What she means is that she's never met anyone who won't for a small amount of money, do the wrong thing. A person when it comes to relationships won't react like a non believer. That people either don't believe 99% of the bible or definitely won't live by it. Yes they'll begin down the road when it is easy, but as soon as life gets tough they do exactly what non believers - she would do.

Sadly i have to agree with her. Every christian i have ever known has lied, cheated, abused people etc etc. I don't mean in silly little ways i mean seriously. If they could get a job done cheaper or a promotion or over time by lying they have and some are happy to boast about it! They don't love other church goers, its hugs and kisses at the door and as soon as the person's out of ear shot gossip gossip gossip, some vile.

Am i any different? The answer is no, but i want to be. I want to meet just one...is that too many....christian to follow faith with. I use to have a saying - show me a christian and i'll show you a liar - i'd like to put it more politely these days, but i'm again back to believing it and please don't be clever and say we are all sinners/ liars i've writen that too many times to know its clever nonsense from people who either don't know the bible or just aren't going to follow it probably EVER!

Not one bible based church. Not one christian, in all the ones i've met. Just people who are smug saying i believe in the death and resurrection, i'm saved.....and i'm not doing ANYTHING else. All that wealth. All that time. Thousands of churches, hundreds of millions of christians and all they will do is use everything God gave them on themselves. The odd few pounds/ dollars of excess money to charity or the church. Hang your heads in shame. Cry with me, that our witness is sending so many to hell.

Will you stand before God and believe he will be happy. Do you honestly think Jesus will say this is one of mine, i'm happy they lived for me. Will you say i believed in your death and resurrection, but it had no effect on my life - save me. Faith without works.

Non believers have us right! BibleBased.

To me, an understanding of the phrase the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Heaven is essential in understanding these verses.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not the place called heaven, but rather the phrase that Jesus chose to describe his movement which was breaking into the world.

For a compelling argument, I would take a look at

Hope that is helpful!

I do not think the things in these verses are limited to a "Kingdom of Heaven" that had never existed before and was being ushered in by Yeshua(Jesus). I believe, when Yeshua said, "The kingdom of heaven is among you." He was acknowledginbg a fact that has always existed. In my opinion, these verses and all of the rest of Yeshua's teahcings are explainations of how we are to live as citizens of The Kingdom that has always existed. Also, when He tells us to pray, "Your Kingdom come. Your will be done." He is recognizing that the power of a kingdom comes from the behavior of its citizenry.
