You know, I did read it. Maybe I'm just not as attuned to the symbolism or the references in the Old Testament. When I read the Bible, I usually take it for what it says.

In Exodus 34, God tells Moses to cut some tablets, then He gives Moses a speech including ten fairly distinct commandments. After that speech, this is what the Bible says:

"Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.' So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments." - Exodus 34:27-28

Perhaps I'm clueless and missing a whole heap, but after lots of words, the LORD says "Write down these words." He then equates these specific words with His covenant. The following verse tells how Moses wrote these words of the covenant, and calls them, again specifically, the Ten Commandments. So I still fail to see how, in your words, "the Bible does not say that the words written in the 34th are the Ten!" It seems to say just that.

Please, in all seriousness, enlighten me as to what I'm missing.

I don't have any propensity to be demeaning, McFatty. Not at all. Just so you'll know. It's just that in order to fully understand, read Deut 34:2 (I think -- I need to get out of here!) which says that the words written are the same as those written on the first tablets. Read Ex 20, then. Now, read Deut 5, which says, specifically, that the Ten that are on the tablets are the Ten that are in Deut 5 and Ex 20.

Further, McFatty, I think that it is great that you are reading and asking the questions. Most people completely ignore these Scriptures, and the rest of Torah -- and the rest of the whole Tanakh! -- until it is convenient for them.

I'll have to do some Deuteronomy study and get back on here tonight.

Abiyah is correct--the Lord commanded him to write down the Ten Commandments...again...and then proceeded to give him further instruction.
