I don't know anything about the facilities at any of the parks or campsites. But, the KOA that I found is in Millersville, MD and that may or may not be convenient. If it were me making the trip, I'd take a look at the Pohick Park suggestion because it is nearer to several historic homes (Mount Vernon, Gunston Hall) and relatively easy to get to the metro. Another park to consider is Prince William Forest Park that is about 10 miles south of the Pohick Park. If you stay there, the Marine Museum is a MUST SEE! I used to produce video materials for the Smithsonian and the National Park Service and I can't think of another museum that is more impressive than the National Museum of the Marine Corps. I see that you are traveling from Western North Carolina. If you travel up I-81, please take a side trip to Bedford, Virginia to visit the National D-Day Memorial. From there you can travel to either Charlottesville (Montecello) or Appomattox Courthouse on your way to DC. The roads of Virginia are just one huge history lesson! [:)] quote:
ORIGINAL: lifeisgoodwgod We are putting together a trip to Washington DC. We felt this is the perfect time to take our dd before beginning an official study of US History. Has anyone ever camped near Washington? We have a camper and plan to take that. There is a KOA nearby. We would like to take the transit system into the mall because of parking issues, etc. Any suggestions of how to get around easily? Anybody stayed at the KOA? Thanks
