First, don't be afraid of offending me when sharing your opinions concerning my mom.

Recently I have been talking to a friend who just lost her mom. She's pretty sure that her mom wasn't a christian. She was upset that she didn't share with her the 'how to's" of salvation. Here's what I told her.

"My mom may have commited suicide, we are not sure if she fell into the creek that night she ran out of the house into the darkness. (she had serious post pardum depression) or if she jumped into the creek. Did she know Jesus? I'm not certain.

But you never know Robin...maybe in those last few moments, maybe somewhere between this dimension and the heaven/hell dimension, maybe Jesus appears to the soul and gives them one more chance. If he goes after the one lamb that has gone astray to pull them from the thorns whose to say how far he will actually go for an unsaved loved one at the moment of death? I pray the Lord gives you peace and comfort knowing how great is His desire that no one perish but that all come to eternal life."

None of us knows who is saved before they die. We're only guessing.

2 Corinthians 6

I may see people in heaven that I'm not really sure of seeing there based on the information I now have. I believe there can be deathbed conversions (such as the thief on the cross).

We don't know that for sure. However, the one thing we can be sure of is that God is just, God is kind, God does that which is right. His character is our comfort. This is where we walk by faith, and not by sight. We can trust Him, even with issues that would otherwise drive us crazy.

I understand the sympathy under which this is stated but it is extremely poor theology. Why witness to anyone if they get a second chance after death?

I concur SoninMe1, espousing that idea will only encourage folks to reject Christ and serve the flesh here on earth, believing that they have a safety net in case there is something after death.

When one dies it is game over, done, and the choices have been made.

Now as to the OP, can one factually declare that the lady is in heaven or hell; no. She had up until the time of her death to accept Christ and no one here on earth knows whether she did or did not do so.

One of this life's greatest mysteries is often this very question: did they make it? As much as we want to believe our loved ones have made it through to glory the facts are that only God knows.
In my own life I can truthfully say that the only sermon I ever put together for a specific person was the one and only time my Mother came to church to hear me preach the gospel. I broke that message down as simply as I could so even a child could understand.You see, she was Catholic her whole life but I had never seen or heard her ever say anything positive about the Lord.I finally convinced her to attend a service I was preaching at and what do you suppose she said to me after the service was over? " You sure are long winded"!!!
I asked her if she had ever accepted Jesus as Savior and her response was "why yes...I did that a long time ago". Now, do I have confidence that she left this world a Christian? Not really...but then again,only God knows for sure.So that's what I have to hope for,that she really did give her heart to the Lord.

I don't think I said after death. I meant at the moment of their death.

I have thought the same thing as you. God will do all that is necessary to bring a person to salvation. He may use the moment of death for some people. We don't know all the ways He works in people's lives.

I'm waiting on my mother to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior. I've prayed for her. I've tried to share with her. Once she was saying that if anyone deserved going to Heaven it was her good friend who had suffered much in her life. I responded to that remark and got told to stop preaching. My brother is also concerned. One time, though, in the car when he was driving and praying about our mother's salvation, he "heard" not to worry about her, she'll be okay. It would be a load off our shoulders if she would submit to God and we know about it, though! In our case, it's not that my brother and I have failed to give our mother the "how to be saved" talk. She is just not willing to let us talk to her about Jesus. It doesn't stop us, though. Everytime I am with my mother I pray that God will open a door to talk to her. I do wait on God to open the door. Last year when I was visiting there was a program on television that we were watching together and during the program she asked a few questions.

My husband's father has passed on. He had never revealed to my husband that he had a relationship with Jesus. He became ill with cancer and we were visiting him prior to his death. He told us he used to read the Bible when he was young. That surprised my husband. Never before had his father indicated he read the Bible to my husband. Then his father requested a Christian hymn be played at his funeral. Another sign to us. The man never came right out and told us Jesus was his Savior, but I want to believe God was very much on my father-in-law's mind at the end. It gave us peace of mind that God was doing all necessary to bring my husband's father home to Him.

I have a little something to add to this topic.

It is about my grandfather, and my mother. My grandfather was a very sick man. One day my mother got a impression to go to him and bring him a tract about heaven and salvation. So she did. When she got home, we got a call that he died. They revived him 3 times. While they were working on him, my mother called our priest to give him last rights, but he said if he was already dead, that there was nothing he could do. She talked him into going, and then got another call to say that he was revived and was asking for her. When she got there he told her that when he died he went to a cold place, where a bunch of people sat around him and were judging him, and that he did not want to go back there. So they prayed and he accepted Jesus right then. My mother went home and arrived to the news that he was dead. She said she asked God if his prayer was sincere and if he was in heaven, and she got the impression that he was. He did die with a smile on his face, and it is our firm belief that he was graciously accepted into heaven, with Jesus arms open wide receiving him.

So how far will He go to save one of us. Well first, He went to the cross, and now I believe that He is willing to give us one more chance, over and over again, even til death, to believe.

I don't know about the being in a cold place and being judged, and am not saying that this will happen to everyone, or anyone. But my mother said she could see the fear in my grandfathers eyes, and believed he experienced that.
