ORIGINAL: beachpjs I also just watched Hotel Rwanda. What a great movie. Don cheadle was so good and I agree that he would have won an oscar if it weren't for Ray (another excellent movie). What made me so mad was that no other country would help in Rwanda. The UN only had 300 troups there. Such a shame. I didn't watch the special features part but before I return it I'm going to go back and watch. We need more movies like this that make us aware of situations in Rwanda. I didn't even realize what had gone on there until it got promoted because of the movie. Neither did I. I was lucky enough to go hear Paul Russessebagina speak at a local church a short while after watching this movie, and I now contribute to a microcredit organization that is helping the people of Rwanda rebuild their lives. Strongly recommend this movie, but the extra features may be a bit much for sensitive viewers.

I finally got to watch the movie "Hogfather" on DVD, which was an adaptation from the Terry Pratchett book of the same name. Now I need to find "The Colour of Magic" which I know exists since I saw that it had been on TV a few months ago. That was Pratchett's first book, and it has Sean Astin miscast in it. I still want to see it anyway...

We went to see Up on Friday. Too bad my 2 year old couldn't sit through this as well as he did when we saw Monsters vs. Aliens. My wife took him out a little over halfway through it. Our 8 year old daughter loved it. It isn't one of Pixar's best, but I still enjoyed it.

Paul Blart Mall Cop- Very funny. I guess slapstick humor still works as long as it's delivered well.

UP! Cried 2 times in the first 30 minutes and teared up near the end. I kept thinking, this is a kids movie?

Onibi: The Fire Within Middle-aged ex-con/yakuza hitman wants to go straight with his life, but it seems his titular, "fire within" just won't make it easy on him--especially when he falls in love with this pianist who would ultimately be the catalyst for all things tragic. I watched this Rochiro Mochizuki film more for its somber, character study, which makes this generic crime drama much more outstanding than its main premise suggests. I have to say that Mochizuki's foray into more serious fare is an impressive effort, given that he was one of many first generation Japanese filmmakers that tried to make something of their careers, upon the collapse of the Japanese studio system in the early 80's (thanks in part to the widespread usage of Japanese TV production--and the growing market for Hollywood films); of course it didn't quite make Mochizuki's career any easier when many of his auteur generation had to take up the domestic porn industry, just to stay afloat, or at least gain some productive internship skills.

I saw UP with my kid and her friend. It was one of the best movie I've seen this year. Lots of great themes there. I did cry a few times, and my daughter said she felt like crying as well. But it was probably the only movie I've seen and felt like running out and getting the DVD right away.

It's about the catholic priest that tried to save as many people during that time. It was very very good...if not better than Hotel Rwanda. I think this priest was even shown in Hotel Rwanda.

Defiance with Daniel Craig- very good movie and well acted. It's about a group of Jewish people who made a community in the woods during WW2. It's also a true story.

Last night I saw The Hangover. ...which was absolutely hilarious. If one is into the more modern Jude Apatow-style comedies (Knocked Up, Superbad, Step Brothers, etc), this is a must-see.

Buffalo Bill and the Indians or Sitting Bull's History Lesson. A 1976 Robert Altman film starring Paul Newman as Buffalo Bill. Pretty good of you like westerns that aren't your typical westerns. Edited for spelling corrections.

'sounds kinda like Altman's other revisionist Western, McCabe & Mrs. Miller. quote:

It isn't about any of Bill's adventures but concentrates on his show in the 1880's when Sitting Bull joined. It was different, I'll give it that much.

I also caught about an hour of the movie "Hidden Secrets" on TBN of all places last night. I only stopped on it because I saw Bo Duke (John Schnieder) in it. Netflix describes it as the Christian version of The Big Chill and that sounds about right. It's not as altogether as horrible as you'd expect a Christian movie to be. Sure, some of the actors stink it up, but it was decent with some actual storylines about controversial subjects like homosexuality and abortion. Of the other actors I had heard of were Corin Nemec, Reginald Val Johnson (the dad on Family Matters), one of the daughters from Step By Step and Rachael Lampa. Buildng 429 has a cameo. I put it in my Netflix queue so I could see the whole thing.

I saw Bride Wars...absolutely hilarious and a great flick. It makes good points on the wedding vs. marriage. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway were excellent. I loved Steve Howie from Reba, so it was good to see him in it as well.

The first thing I remembered when I saw it was how odd it was seeing Reginald VelJohnson playing something other than a cop.
