I also caught about an hour of the movie "Hidden Secrets" on TBN of all places last night. I only stopped on it because I saw Bo Duke (John Schnieder) in it. Netflix describes it as the Christian version of The Big Chill and that sounds about right. It's not as altogether as horrible as you'd expect a Christian movie to be. Sure, some of the actors stink it up, but it was decent with some actual storylines about controversial subjects like homosexuality and abortion. Of the other actors I had heard of were Corin Nemec, Reginald Val Johnson (the dad on Family Matters), one of the daughters from Step By Step and Rachael Lampa. Buildng 429 has a cameo. I put it in my Netflix queue so I could see the whole thing.

Staci Keenan was the Step by Step daughter in question. The first thing I remembered when I saw it was how odd it was seeing Reginald VelJohnson playing something other than a cop.

I know. I expected him to start scolding Steve Urkel at some point.

Very, very good movie. I loved Eastwoods character. If you're not offended by harsh language watch it.

I actually teared up at the end.

Yeah, it's truly the epitome of "laying down one's life for a friend"...

Shane. Not your typical Western and that's a good thing. I just got back from a vacation in the Grand Tetons and the setting made me wish I was still there.

I am now 30 mins into The Longest Day.

Passengers- with Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson. Survivors on a plane crash and was not sure where it was going but towards the middle I had an idea on what went on but then the ending kinda surprised me more.

Ghost World
Essentially a coming-of-age story featuring a couple of high school grads trying to make their way in the world. Some edgy content makes this not a movie for everyone, but fits in nicely with the newer faux-indie films ala Garden State and Superbad.

The Longest Day.

It was long, but a good epic war movie with tons of stars. If you get the double disc I highly recommend the documentaries.

Love Ghost World; now if I can only get the original graphic novel... that would be sweet

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. I guess like everybody else when it comes to Peckinpah I favor The Wild Bunch, but this wasn't altogether terrible, and I like Kris Kristofferson in this more than anything else I've seen him in.

Just Add Pepper. It was quite the horrible indie dramedy. But it had heart so I won't completely throw it under the bus.

Since my last post I have seen:

The Break Up. Yawn.

Fort Apache. Never had seen a John Ford western and I must say they are quite good. John Wayne especially good in this one.

I am in the middle of watching Patton. Mesmerized by George C. Scott's performance. Just great.

The Pursuit of Happyness. I liked it. It's inspirational without being smarmy.

Madea goes to jail- Madea has a lot of airtime this time. Funny and I got weepy with a couple of scenes. Once again, 'forgiveness' message was delivered. I like Tyler Perry movies since I think the message is presented better than some Christian made movies. And btw, I wish Madea's cellmate had more scenes....she was so hilarious!

This past weekend I saw two movies on DVD. The first one was "Megashark versus Giant Octopus". It is not as bad as it sounds... it is worse. If you really want to see this dog of a film, then be prepared to suspend ALL disbelief. And I do mean ALL. The only redeeming thing about the movie was watching Debbie Gibson (OK, Deborah...) who I can remember having a thing for when I was much younger. She is not as cute as she once was, and she is not as good of an actor as she was a singer. Take that however you will...

The second movie I watched, after my son went to bed, was the newest "Friday the 13th" movie. As far as remakes go, it was incredibly well done. It showed itself to be quite it's own movie, while still paying homage to the original. I was very impressed. Slasher movies are seemingly a lost art, what with all the blood and gore fests we have today. Yeah, there is a time and place for movies that get into your head psychologically. But sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy the terror of an unstoppable killing machine. I would give it three thumbs up, but I only have two hands...

Lars and The Real Girl - I really really liked this movie! I think it's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

Madea Goes To Jail - The movie was just okay for me. I liked the play better. The play was hilarious.

Let's see...what all did I see.

Tristan & Isolde - decent for a medieval pic
The Man in the Iron Mask - better than i was expecting
Posiedon - yawn
Freedom Writers - better than Dangerous Minds but not much
Six Days in June - decent doc on Six Days War
The Wager - decent for a Christian flick but Randy Travis is tiresome
Monty Pyton's And Now For Something Completely Different - love Python
The Ballad Of Cable Houge - another weird Peckinpah western

Needless to say I have a job that lends itself to watching movies.

I had a recent French double feature, so to speak...

L'Etudiante (The Student)
Some vintage, late 80's rom-com starring a collegiate-aged Sophie Marceau, pairing up with Vincent Lindon as the titular, undergraduate character. It's a bit cutesy at times, especially with the English-language, synthesizer-scored, theme song

La Nuit Fauves (Savage Nights)
The controversial, early 90's AIDS drama deals with a bisexual photo-journalist (Cyril Collard), living in total disregard for consequences of his lifestyle action--especially with his long-suffering girlfriend (Romane Bohringer), having to stomach the former's dangerous shenanigans. For the most part, the story feels superficial and predictable in all its immorality, but come the latter acts of the story, I think I kind of feel a bit of sympathy for the reckless anti-hero/protagonist. Whether or not the main character will finally/implicity achieves any degree of maturity for his loose actions (after the end credit sequence) remains open to debate...

But then again, I was watching them without English subtitles, so I can attest to everyone here how much of a challenge it is for me to pick individual French words so as to comprehend individually complete sentences...

This last weekend I saw "Imagine That" with Eddie Murphy. Very clean, family movie with a strong emphasis on making your family your first priority. A very good movie that I would recommend anyone see. The plot itself is rather flimsy, but its entertaining nonetheless.

Chisum - a western John Wayne made in the 70's. Decent if not standard from the Duke.
