Julie & Julia...so good (but really could have done without the almost-bedroom scenes, however).

Funny People with Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen.

Too many silly school boy jokes for me. My friends (female, in their late 20s/early 30s) thought it was hilarious.

Oh, and a special showing of a TD Jakes film, Not Easily Broken. About marriage. Ok, but seen the same kind of thing before.

Anthony Zimmer

A French, Hitchcock-styled thriller involving a recent divorcee (Yvan Attal), coming across a femme fatale (Sophie Marceau), the latter of the two "mistakened" the former as the titular, criminal mastermind/lover, on the constant run from both the Russian Mafia and the French police.

"Cold Souls"

With Paul Giamatti (playing himself)--Is the soul an anchor or an asset? That's the question Paul Giamatti tries to answer.

Sly stuff with plenty to think about.

The Imitation of Life for the umpteenth time. I always say I'm not gonna cry at the end but I always do.

Black Snake Moan - I liked this movie. I really got it, but I do realize it's not everybody's cup of tea. I think with this one they should have left most of the deleted scenes in.

Join Us - A documentary about a church that's really a cult. It was okay, both sad and hopeful.

Lana Turner is great in that movie! She leaves no piece of scenery unchewed.

On the plane--

"(500) Days of Summer"

A Not-In-Love-Story about feeling bad.
The shuffled presentation of a romance history recoups the suspense of old-time RomCom's, and that's a huge improvement for the usual drivel. Not a great movie--moderately annoying narration, title cards, and Belle and Sebastian complaint rock--but not the standard treacle.

On the plane back to NYC--

"Sugar"
A very good baseball movie about the love of sport and the business of corruption.
See it!

Watchmen

I thought I wouldn't like it but I admit I did like it. Definitely not you're typical superhero film. And it was thought provoking. Yes it was pretty graphic and I definitely would not recommend it for kids. It was one of those kind of films that at first I wasn't thrilled after watching but then after digesting it, it kinda grew on me.

Backstage

A somewhat, unsettling, French character drama concerning a pop star (that seems to reek of the pop cultural reference, "Madonna") and an adolescent fan. Apart from the story, I'm extremely floored by how good of a singer Emmanuelle Seigner can be!
TRAILER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5KZPa7vc4o

BTW: I'm thinking about acquisitioning the soundtrack!

(Johnnie To's) Election

Also known as Triad Election, it's To's darkly comic insight on the cutthroat electoral process in which rival Chinese crime syndicates will go through to get their preferred candidate into the all-powerful chairman's seat... probably no different than what we often see stateside with our presidential/congressional elections!
But still, after viewing Triad Election, methinks that considering how much harmony is such a integral theme to this crime film, maybe I should provocatively ask if Asian organized crime is the best, real world example of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Eastern religious traditions at work here--whackings and all!

Paul Giamatti is hilarious.

On the plane:
"Funny People"

Meh.
I couldn't figure out why director Judd Apatow placed a Made-For-TV-Drama in the middle of his standard Boys-Will-Be-Boys comedy.

I Love You, Man~dh hated it, said it was a chick flick with male characters. I thought Paul Rudd was good but it wasn't laugh out loud funny (which I think was the problem for dh).

Adventureland~we both liked it a lot. College age angst about friends, life, and dating but nicely done.

I've always watched the Lana Turner version, but this time I got my hands on the origional version which was just as heartbreaking.

Last House on the Left - This movie was intense and gritty but in saying all that, watching the premise of this movie unfold made me laugh. Oh man!

The Kite Runner - This was my second time watching this movie and Hasson is one of my favorite characters. He's right up there with Miss Celie! I enjoyed seeing this movie again.

Thanks...I'll add it to my list when I do my cryfest. I really do luv me a good break me down nose runnin' tearjerker. They're not so easy to come by. I've been relying on my old standbys: The Color Purple, The Joyluck Club, & The Imitation of Life. They all break me down and have me doing that hard crying every time.

I agree. I've been re-watching "I am Sam" (I had to stop to get ready for work, but I'll finish it tomorrow), and I love that movie, though it does make me cry, or at least feel like crying. At least the first part did. I don't remember how it ends.

Skyfighters (a.k.a. Les Chevaliers Du Ciel)

Call it the French answer to Top Gun, this concerns a couple of Air Force pilots (Benoit Magimel, Clovis Collard) smack dab in the middle of what appears to be an illegal arms trade, involving the central Mirage fighter planes used liberaly throughout this movie.

BTW: methinks the soundtrack by Chris Corner is kinda catchy; catchy enough for me to go find this on ebay!

Last House on the Left.

Why oh why did I watch this?? There were scenes I had to fast forward through - one scene in particular in the woods. Why was that even necessary? If there was ever a movie I could unwatch this would be it!

I really like that movie, techne. A few of the songs still stick in my head.

I like the Frames though (Hansard's usual band).
