ORIGINAL: dsfuva Virginia had a sales tax holiday last week on batteries, lamps, and other disaster preparation supplies. Unfortunately, most local retailers chose not to offer any other discounts on such items, so I suspect that there wasn't that much benefit from the tax holiday. However, the state government appears ready to recover any lost revenue from the tax holiday and then some. The governor recently proposed Virginia's second major tax increase in four years. We usually have one this week too - but it's been eliminated.

ORIGINAL: landabee So funny that you started this thread topic. I was reading the thumb in the air guesses predictions for this hurricane season. Seems that the people that specialize in this stuff expect a more active year than last. There's not a lot to not love about Central Florida......hurricanes are one of the few. Preparations? The usual. Water, candles, batteries, first aid kit, cordless radios, canned foods, all important papers easily located, charcoal and lighter fluid, etc. Praying for God's mercy once again this year. Preparations are about the same for me. I'm not too worried, though the 2004 year reminded me that even the interior portions of Florida can take a hit and lose power... we lost power for a week -- TWICE. Fortunately, the cities, counties, and state have made changes so that power loss will be minimal in comparison. This morning in church, we got down on our knees to pray for Florida as we prepare for a busy hurricane season. DS, we didn't have a tax holiday this year due to the budget cuts. I don't know if people got out and stocked up on supplies yet... I know I didn't. Maybe tomorrow afternoon.

Michelle - don't break the bank all at once - get some things a bit each week or two weeks. And make sure they are things that you will ultimately use after the season is over.

Oh, I never buy a lot. I'll probably just get some bottled water, batteries, candles, and some canned/boxed food. The rest of the stuff I keep from year to year. I'm very fortunate that I don't have to worry about things others do... like flooding, or trees falling on the house, so I don't have to worry about sand bags or even tarps.

ORIGINAL: mutinywxgirl You KNEW I HAD to do something. Are YOU prepared (those who live in hurricane areas), and those who don't, are you prepared for your own "disasters" that could happen in your area??? Honestly, no, however things do not happen often in the city enough for me to be concerned though, but then again I must be in denial, lol! Actually, if I hear of a storm or something coming, I do try to be prepared, at least a little bit. quote:
but ya know what's 'plagued' us the last few years...straight windss. it's much windier, in general, here...but sometimes we get these straight winds that can be in excess of 70 MPH. they literally flattened much of the corn around here last summer. some was so bad they couldn't even pick it! just horrible for the farmers here. Boston is almost "always" windy!

Yes, Malinda, straight line winds can be just as damaging as tornado winds.

Should I be mean this summer and keep telling everyone how nice the weather is here all summer? I wonder if I can make the Floridians and Texans jealous?

no wondering about it, bro! All of us in the south (east/west/TX) will be jealous. You don't even have to try.

I learned this winter that others have it a LOT worse than I do. I can even notice a huge difference in the weather here than where I grew up just one state away!

Do you have high humidity in the summer, Broyce? Thats my only complaint about summers in Maryland, the temps wouldn't seem so hot without the suffocating humidity. But it seems like any place with pleasant summers also has long, cold winters and I DO NOT like that! Well, what am I complaining about? I love the south so I will just have to deal with it! Though I didn't think that southern Ga. even had humidity like we do.

Oh, yes it does. Humidity can only go to 100%. Southern GA has both heat and humidity and still winds (areas NOT near the coastline). It's oppressively hot and humid and lasts longer than your heat/humidity in MD. The difference is that you will get a few days that are higher in heat, but they don't last for weeks on end. You get breaks - even if it goes back down into the 80's, it's still a break.
