TVP is textured vegetable protein. It looks almost like dehydrated hash browns. You reconstitute it with water or broth. It has very little flavor on its own and readily absorbs other flavors. When I mix it with hamburger while the burger is cooking, and add spices, it's hard to tell what's burger and what's TVP. That's about the only way I like to use it. It's too bland on its own. Health food stores sell it. Our Hy-Vee carries it too.

I've tried and it you can definitely tell its not meat. I'd rather just eat the real meat (lean of course)

So in my losing weight and being more conscious of what I'm eating and exercising and stuff, and with a few of my co-workers doing the same, I'm noticing others' weights more.

anyone else do that???? A fellow tboner from my tbone group went on vacation for a month. He got back and the first thing I noticed was that he gained about 40 lbs. Holy cow!

I don't know if I'd ever been so aware of people's weight before I started paying so much attention to my own.

Close enough for me. Did you mix it with meat, or try it by itself?

If you are referring to me, I bought the premade burgers made with it in the frozen section.

Those are gross. They wouldn't have any meat in them. I only like it when I make it at home and mix it 50/50 with meat.

Grrr. Well I keep saying I'm gonna start doing things; working out, eating better, but just never do it. I hate this beginning stage. Today is Zach's birthday ... it's one of those things where I say, "Well tomorrow will be a better day to start." *sigh*

I understand that feeling all too well, because I say it all the time. "I'm going to eat better tomorrow." "I'm going to only eat 150 carbs today." "I'm going to walk from my home town to the state capital next week, (about 60+ miles)" I always say I'm gonna do it, but I never DO IT!

For me anyway, I guess I have to make up my mind if I truly want to lose weight and become more fit, then just take baby steps to do it. Perfectionism is one of my weaknesses, so I have to stop beating up on myself if I fall off the food wagon. I just have to forgive myself, ask God to forgive me, let it go and get back on.

Today I weighed myself and I've gained another 1/2 lb.! That's 1 1/2 lbs in the last two weeks. I've got to make some changes and I need to make them now if I want to stop this troubling gaining trend. Every moment of each day is a brand new beginning, so I just need to do something about it, starting TODAY, not tomorrow.

A few of the people in our small group have been doing the south beach diet for a while and losing weight, and DH is now in the early stages of considering doing it (if that makes any sense). If he decides to do it, I'll probably get the basic book and the recipe book from the library.

Planning to hit the gym today. I'll decide after that if I"m ready to move onto week 3 of the c25k

I had a garage sale today. Think that should qualify for a good workout, right? It was crazy getting everything out, but then we didn't really have that many people stop by. Oh well...God will provide!

It's a fantastic, balanced diet. Crystal's hubby Dustin did it and lost a decent amount of weight.

The south beach diet paperback is less than 7.00 but most of the info can be found online. Some of the recipes are kind of pricy so I would just search recipe boards for more realistic ones.

Stacy,

I did SB twice to kickstart my diets. It works great.

I have both the book and a recipe book that I don't use anymore.

I thought Dustin was the one who had done it- I know he lost a significant amount of weight. I agree with what I know about this diet (other than the allowing for artificial sweeteners), and from my reading it looks like a diet I can safely do along with him even though I don't really have any weight to lose. The main obstacle that he sees so far is finding a replacement for his caffeine addiction since regular pop isn't allowed. He's going to chicago for a week at the beginning of august, so if we start it would be after he gets back.
Christine- if I can't find the books in the library (which I'm pretty sure I can), then I may be interested in your copies.

Did the gym yesterday- I'm SO not ready to move out of week 2...its just been kicking my tail the past few times.

The South Beach diet is similar to the one that I do, the GI Diet. I agree about the artificial sweeteners though, I usually substitute fructose instead of regular sugar in my baking, and sometimes honey or maple syrup. They are more "natural" and not chemically altered.

For caffeine addiction... black coffee? Or coffee with milk. Green tea, regular tea, iced tea... these are all calorie free as long as you don't add sugar!

Stacy, week three sounds intimidating, but I almost found it easier. Week two is hard, doing all those intervals. How many times have you done week two?

I'm beginning to get intimidated by my runs for the week....28 minutes on Week 8. Last Friday was the first day that I was able to run solid through the entire run for week 7. I'll go ahead and move on...just to see what I can do. Can always stop a couple of minutes early if I need to.

I don't like the idea of artificial sweetener.

I try to avoid it if I can. I'd rather not have something sweet than use artificial. I also don't care for the taste as much.

Questions for those that have done South Beach:

1) Is it safe for diabetics? I'm figuring it is, but wanted to ask those that might be more knowledgeable before I spend money on the book (DH and my mom are diabetic and I'm wondering if this might be something good for all of us to try).

2) Is it possible to eat "cheaply" on it? With grocery prices as they are, that's pretty important.

3) Is it safe for kids to eat? Modified of course! We have three little ones and if the grown ups are going to try it, they'll end up eating like that some too.

South Beach is fantastic for diabetics. It's balanced in carbs and fats more so then say Atkins or even the low GI diet, IMO. It would be fine for kids as well, and usually the meals are pretty easy to modify for different needs.

Eating cheaply... I'm not one to ask about that, lol. My opinion tends to be that healthy food should be a priority, and like any lifestyle change it is a bit more expensive. Nuts are more expensive then potato chips, fruit is more expensive then cookies, etc...

Yolanda- I've done week 2 three times. It seems like its gotten more difficult each time instead of getting easier.

DH might go for the coffee with milk idea- he doesn't like it black, and he doesn't like the texture of stevia, which we've tried. I hate hate hate artificial sweeteners, but he has a caffeine addiction that will not quit. He's tried to give up pop but always goes back, and its a battle I've decided I'm not willing to fight anymore. We have started buying more Hansen's pop, so at least it doesn't have HFCS, but the ones he likes don't have caffeine in them. I'll have to bring that up if we decide to pursue this.

I was wondering about the food cost of SB too- DH likes to cook, so with a book of recipes I'm sure he'd just go to town.

Kat- you can probably find the books used for next to nothing- I see them frequently at thrift stores. Try Amazon's used section, or half.com

Stacy, have ya'll tried Whey Low type D? Or Agave? The Whey Low is the only thing other then sugar that I will use, we are also anti-artificial sweetener in this house. My Dad uses the Type D, it's diabetic safe.

I am diabetic. The South Beach diet was actually recommended by my internist. The complex carbs that are introduced in stage 2 are much better for controlling insulin spikes. The glycemic index of the foods allowed are VERY amenable to a healthy diabetic diet.

Now cheaply: Well... since I've never cooked with mixes and kits I already save there.

I grow a little produce. I buy quite a bit of my produce from farmer's markets.

The balance of the diet is lean meats, cheeses and nuts.

Not cheap, but not overly pricey.

I like the plan. Our whole family eats it.

Some of the recipes in the book are But there are LOTS of tasty recipes at the South beach site.

As for littles eating it: if they are past requiring whole milk, they should be fine. They may not like some of the more 'gourmet' recipes. But apples and cheese and peanut butter are in there.

You may have a bit of an adjustment when you move to "real" bread, though. My sons had a bit of time with that.

Sounds like I may hit the used bookstore tonight and see if I can find a copy of SB then.

Bread shouldn't be a problem with my babes. They're already used to me insisting on real whole wheat bread (usually with flax and nuts and seeds too). My two smallest do still need whole milk, but I'll just continue to buy them their own milk.

Oh! I meant to tell you, KatMack: when I follow the eating plan, my hemoglobin A1C (glycosolated hemoglobin) stays in a healthy range. (Measures average blood glucose over three months, to give an idea of control)

I credit the meal plan would me continuing to avoid any type of medication for my diabetes.

I recently re-dedicated myself to the program. I am currently enjoying stage 2 meals. Stage 1 is a bit hard, but worth the detox.

It is my prayer that with consistent exercise that my 3 month glucose average will improve again coupled with the meal plan.

It has been HOT here. Therefore, walking has been taking place very early or very late. So far, I've only missed three times since starting. Not a stellar record, but better than I had been.

I keep waiting for the day when I will "miss" not walking... instead of "making myself" keep the committment.

Yea, my sister keeps telling me that day will come. Maybe if I ever get consistent, I'll get there
