And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to Him to God the Father.

Colossians 3:17 (NASB)

Everything about ourselves must be grown out of Christ and rooted in the gospel. If you watch a movie, work, talk with someone, surf the net, exercise, give, or recieve, etc. This way of thinking will begin to sift out those wasteful or ungodly things.

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

James 2:26 (NIV)

I think this verse issued a strong contrast between true faith and intellectual acceptable of Christ.

To be intellectually atune to Christ existence, his life and ministry does not mean one is reborn. But faith by a regenerated follower is always evident by the Christ-like concern for spreading the gospel and tending to the flock.

A philosopher in ancient Greece or Rome at the time, would be widely respected and uplifted for their writings and assesment of things, but they had little deeds, only wisdom, therefore only defined by their wisdom. Christ ministered God's word to people and performed miracles to God's glory. I am not saying we must perform miracles, but we minister God's word to people and are ambassators of Christ as reborn followers of Christ.

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Colossians 3:8

I think this verse is a strong warning against what so many are doing in our current times, relying on self and human knowledge.

The Lord answered Job out of the storm. He said....
.... Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid it's cornerstone--- while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

Job 38:1 & 4-7

Basically telling Job that I am God!!!!

First time for me at this particular thread....

My take on this verse is that since it's what's in your heart that runs the course of your life, that you should keep your heart as pure as possible. For instance, a bad heart (or negative feelings on life) leads to a bad life (life of anger and bitterness) while a good heart produces a life of peace and joy.

I'm doing fine, Mike. Thank you! [:)]

Thank you, Mark328 for posting on this thread! Your thoughts, opinions, and insight are welcome here.

Each on should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else.

Galatians 6:4 (NIV)

You have to set the standard for yourself, and don't let others set that standard for you. Plus, I think it's fair to say also that it's easy for your ego to be inflated by others. This verse seems to say, "Don't worry about the opinions of others; instead, do what is right in your heart."

Someone can say that you're doing a great and noble thing, but you yourself may not feel that way at all. That's another way of looking at this verse, too.

That is a very good point.

Hi hi. Just perusing. I like this thread. :)

I think that, for the Jude verse, I am struck by how I have the potential to be (and have actually been) unmerciful to those who doubt or who have fallen aside at the time, when I should be the opposite. Those who doubt are in a position of more need than I, and therefore it is my responsibility to have grace and patience for that stage of spiritual formation. In fact, I need grace even when I purport to offer grace. This is certain: there's really no doubting that we ought to be merciful regardless of circumstances.
