I think "the one" is something you see in retrospect rather than something you know as soon as you meet a person. When I say that, a lot of romantics argue with me but I look at things a bit more practically. But for me, personally, I don't want to be able to say "She is the one" when I first meet a woman (I had a bad habit of this in my younger years). I want to pursue my wife, win her, marry her, and spend a lifetime with her. I know that's really hard to think about in a divorce-riven culture, but I am committed to it. When I look back at the years together I'll know she was the one, without a doubt.
I guess maybe I am a little romantic, after all.

good point about retrospect. for every personal anecdote of people saying they married the one and they knew immediately, there's probably at least one more that could be posted of people thinking someone was the one and it not working out.
