Ok....so I guess I can officially join this thread now! In fact, on Sunday when Ray and I were driving home from our honeymoon, he got a call that his unit was being activated to help with Gustav relief. Sheesh! Well at least it waited until AFTER the honeymoon!

Honey will be on a plane out of Georgia this evening for his two week vacation in Iraq. He will have a week between his getting back from this trip and his actually "signing in". I believe most of you know he works with computers and paperwork(think leave and pay and awards). He came home yesterday in fits. He actually got to meet most of the M-day troops for the first time. I mentioned a while way back that his NCOIC, whom he was greatly relying on because he had NEVER worked with the unit before, was down and out due to thyroid cancer(he is not doing well emotionally right now. It had gone further than they had hoped). The active duty folks(only a handfull in the office) only 2 are still going. the balance have all come up with medical issues. The 2 still going? they were the 2 lowest ranking folks in the office and told Honey that they never handled any of the "big" things. The M-Day(that's 1 weekend a month 2 weeks a year folks) tell Honey the same thing. the core folks(the ones that are all sick or filing retirement papers) did the work and either never let them do anything or only gave them typists work. Honey is going overseas with an untried- untrained team. He did go to bat for them telling someone that they had JOBS to do and were not the "typing pool" from WWII. So he is working on building relationships but he is so frustrated with the situation right now. His new NCOIC is a man he trusts and has worked with before but the new NCOIC is sitting there with him shaking his head because they are both Green and do not KNOW the soldiers. OH and the new NCOIC said YES to the deployment less than 2 weeks ago folks! his family got TWO WEEKS NOTICE! I could just cry for them. The company waited in hopes that the NCOIC with the thyroid issue was a benign remove it go on the meds thing. HE was praying that he'd be okay to go by the time they had to hit the sand. Not happening. ~e

Wow ... we got 24 days notice that my wonderful DH was getting redeployed back to Iraq .... of course, that's less than 60 days since he got back from Iraq, so it did take us by surprise -- we didn't think he had to go back for deployment #5 until March. Now it looks like Feb/March will be deployment #6. The powers that be contacted us this past weekend to see if he wanted to volunteer to help with Gustav "since he had a few weeks down time" before he returned to Iraq. They seemed to have forgotten all that pesky pre-deployment training and paperwork he has to do. SHEESH. Needless to say, once reminded of that, they decided he was "probably too busy to help." Anyway, we've been looking into vacation options for when DH is back (December/January) in between deployments (the USAF loves these 3 month deployments with a month or two off, then right back again) ... and we were wondering how simple it would be to catch a Space A flight from California to Alaska in January. (Yes, Alaska in January ... we really ARE insane.) I am willing to be adventurous and try it, but my wonderful DH thinks it will be just simpler to just ... gasp ... buy plane tickets. (Especially since we'd have a 4 hour drive to get to Travis AFB, anyway.) How are Januaries in Alaska, anyway?

Jennifer...having a man to help with repairs/go along to a mechanic is a GOOD idea. Seriously. If you read my blog a couple months ago...you know why I'm so on board with that idea. In the same vein, having a man who is willing to help with home repairs (for those that live off post) is a good idea too. With that though, I would say that the wife of said man needs to come along..but that's just me. Help with occasional childcare is also great. Not only that, but a list of those willing to help with childcare for doctor's appts/dentist appts, shopping...everyday things like that kwim? Company is always welcome too! "Hey, you and the kids wanna come over for lunch?"...it can be VERY easy to become isolated as a deployed spouse. That's all I can think of off hand. I'll ask my gf's if you'd like Sandy
