Same principle I apply and expect from my future hubby. I award this post five golden stickers of excellence.

Same principle I apply and expect from my future hubby. I award this post five golden stickers of excellence. While I applaud the thought, I'm not sure this is always practical. I have been friends with a person of the opposite sex for over 25 years--we knew each other before we both married (mine having ended in divorce). Over the years we have lived in different places but kept in touch and visited whenever we were in the area; sometimes making special trips to visit. Now I made it a point to become friends with my friend's spouse, and had the spouse objected, I would have bowed out gracefully; I have no desire to interfere in the marriage. I have often had dinner out with this friend both before and after our marriages and my divorce both with and without spouses. Sometimes we meet because I needed to discuss something sensitive and get an opposite sex opinion. We also carry on very long conversations on the phone--since we are both talkers, these conversations can last over an hour. There has not and never will be anything improper between us. If my friend or I had made a rule such as above, then we both would have missed out on our friendship over the years.

It's really not practical in some work environments. Just depends on what you do for a living.

I think it is. However, it can be very tricky and dangerous. Temptation lurks in these kind of relationships, at least for me as I am a single mom.

This may sound rational, but, couldn't all these things be done with your wife, whom is supposed to be your best friend? I have a very close friend (whom is a girl) that is like a sister to me. Still, I wouldn't allow that friendship to interfere with my marriage, so I wouldn't put myself in a situation that might cause it to, however innocent it may be.

Torchheart, Couldn't help but notice THIS I find it hard to understand how, as a married man, you find the time to be friends to be closely involved with not just one, but apparently several female friends. I am lucky if I can find the time to catch up with just one friend each week.

I am also wondering about this ^ and whether this (insert arrow pointing downward) problem has been resolved with the wife. quote:
My wife has a problem with the fact that I'm still in contact with her. I do love my wife, and would never leave her for my old flame, but I do care a lot about my ex and don't want to break off contact with her. ----emphasis added Torchheart, how are things going now?

Torchheart, why don't you want to break off contact with her? especially if your wife has a problem with it.

I'm thinking all three are one and the same. (Unless I'm missing something?) ETA: fixed format

I believe so. I have more guy friends than I do girl friends. It just makes it difficult if I like a guy, who's my friend. As in, like like. And I back off...just until those feelings will subside. It might not be a healthy strategy (thats what people tell me)...but I think it's better doing that.
