Liveloved -> A lesson on uprooting tares (6/6/2008 3:21:31 PM)

I've been in the gospel of Matthew recently. The story of the wheat and the tares is there. And when the slaves ask if they should go and gather up the tares, Jesus says, "No, lest while you are gathering up the tares, you may root up the wheat with them."

I was out in one of our flowerbeds---doing the perennial weeding/cleanup. I have one flower, malva, that wants to grow everywhere. It insinuates itself amongst my 'prize' flowers.

This morning as I was out working to rid the bed of all the malva, the Lord showed me the danger of this kind of work and how it relates to the spiritual life. One malva was coming up in some ornamental grass and next to a peony. As I was working to dig out the nasty interloper malva, a sharp piece of grass was blown across my eye causing me considerable pain.

As I stopped what I was doing, I was shown that this is why we are told to leave the tares alone. It is dangerous work and you can be harmed if you attempt to remove those who have insinuated themselves within the body as well. God says leave them. He will do the weeding, the sorting out at the harvest.

So as my eye stung from the pain of the blade of grass, I said, "Thank You, Lord, for showing me in a very real way what you were telling me in regard to the wheat and the tares. This work is not mine to do. I will not concern myself with the things that are too difficult for me. I will leave those things to You."

Anyway, just wanted to share my lesson from the flowerbed.[:)]

Brilliant illustration but hope your eye is all right.

What a profound illustration.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Little_1. It is fine. But the pain stopped me long enough to hear the Lord speaking. Isn't that the way He often works? Bless ya![:)]

Trying to clarify my understanding here. Are you saying that the lesson was to allow the tares to continue their destructiveness within the body because we are not to intervene?

The parable of the wheat and tares is Matt. 13:24. Explained in 13:36

Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers,"First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn."

This is sometimes hard to understand. But when things start growing together the roots get all interwound and if you pulled the tares up ,you might destroy your wheat crop, so the owner of the field says let them grow together until the harvest.

The lesson I see in it is that only God knows to judge rightly.

It is important to see in this parable that the field is the world, not the church. Churches are commanded to to discipline the unruly (1 Cor 5:9-13).

This parable just reinforces the importance of being a true disciple of Christ and the eternal consequence of not believing.

I was not speaking in the OP of tares continuing destructiveness within the body. Dealing with sin within the body is addressed in scripture. However, I think the passage is more directed towards belief (wheat) and unbelief (tares) and unbelief is certainly sin but God is saying for us not to try and separate these individuals out---too much destruction and harm to those who believe can result.

What is a tare? A tare has 'the look of wheat'. It wants to be considered as wheat. For people, it is no different. Tares are those who look like a Christian, probably do all the right things, agree to all the right doctrines, and are even zealous for God. But they lack true faith, belief. Just like the malva in my flowerbed, they insinuate themselves in the life of the body. And God says leave them.

That's what I was speaking to. Hope that helps you understand me.[:)]

It does, thank you![:)]
