wareaglekd -> Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/9/2008 12:11:06 PM)

Presently, I have an antenna because several years ago I had to make the decision to cut off cable to save money. Now w/ the change coming up next year I need to make a decision. But, I don't know which way to go. W/ all the advertisements for introductory offers, etc. I want to make an educated decision. I had contacted Charter Cable recently for information, but they were not much help. I'll need to check w/ my local office. Then, the silly commercial came out about the vacuum guy who sucks up all the money in the house after the introductory offer for cable is over. It's silly, but it is certainly true. I struggle w/ the decision on satellite because my sister has had a lot of problems w/ it over the years, but she does live in the country, so it's bound to happen until changes can be made where she lives. What would you recommend? kd

We have cable because we can then have cable internet and VOIP! [:D]

Read the offers. They should tell you what the rate will be after the introductory period.

OR...

Buy the converter box so you don't have to get cable OR satellite!

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/9/2008 12:55:52 PM)

we have cable only because it is cheaper to get the cable/internet/phone package through the cable company then it is to get the internet and phone hooked up through the phone company....about $20 cheaper actually....and we don't have to worry about long distance phone calling time limits (we have unlimited nationwide long distance anytime with the cable hook up phone system).
If we didn't have this set up though, we would just get a converter box and not go with satellite.

stateofgrace -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/9/2008 1:20:56 PM)

Be sure to check out the packages (phone + tv service + internet) available from all the providers in your area. Typically you can get a better value from a package then from buying the services from two or more providers.

I agree with stateofgrace. We had satellite for a long time and really no complains. It's affordable and pretty much content except for occasional bad weather when we lose signal but it's very rare. However, our local cable company offered a package for cable, internet & digital phone for $99 up to 2 years - no contract so we decided to sign up and see. We had one TV connected with satellite but with the cable package we get up to 2 TV plus DVR (that I am enjoying tremendously) and phone line that includes longdistance service. We figure that we'll keep this then we'll see what comes up in 2 years. So check around for the packages first.

I'm very happy with changing from Verizon phone and DSL and Comcast cable...to all Verizon FIOS.

The one thing that I'm disappointed with is that some of my favorite channels aren't on FIOS OnDemand yet and they were on Comcast OnDemand (USA, BBC-America, TBS, TNT...so I need to be sure and DVR shows on those networks).

OTOH...the picture quality is outstanding (much better than Comcast Digital Cable), we have boxes on four tvs, the internet service is faster, and we have free long distance on the phone...and that is for like $20-30 less a month than our previous set up. I did add in the $15/mo movie channel package (Starz/Encore/Showtime/MovieChannel/Flix/IFC...like 40 channels) but I may drop that after a while (there's a series I'd like to see coming this fall to HBO, and I may substitute the HBO package but I could get the show from iTunes if I wanted).

garsyt -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/9/2008 3:18:10 PM)

$10 one time (after the $40 coupon the government sends out)for the convertor box vs. a monthly bill at any price for cable/satellite?

Let me see?

Convertor box with the antenna! To me it was a major finanacial decision.

Blessings,

Garsy

wareaglekd -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/9/2008 4:14:41 PM)

I wanted to get the convertor box, but don't think it would give me enough of what I need. I live in a college town & it's been a booger trying to plan how to watch the games. Most of them wind up on ESPN. This town I live in is crazy. The cable company insists on having ESPN on expanded instead of basic. Just doesn't make sense when everyone wants to watch the game. My dad used to turn on the expanded through the football months & then cancel backt o basic afterwards, but they caught on to that, so couldn't do it anymore. k

Miss Giggles -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/9/2008 7:39:02 PM)

Satellite is not bad, but it depends on where you live. Some areas lose their signal more often. Cable goes out a lot too in some areas.

You're right, if you are really into sports then you end up getting cable/satellite so you can more get more of the games. They put them on ESPN and other cable channels for a reason.

DreadPirateRandy -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/10/2008 4:04:20 AM)

We had cable and we hated it.

We got satellite and we liked it.

lexie -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/10/2008 7:51:03 AM)

We have satellite because for what we wanted, it was a better price than cable.

I generally like it, however my only complaint is what happened to me yesterday - I missed parts of the end of the Netherlands-Italy game thanks to a thunderstorm! In bad weather, our satellite drops the signal.

That's the only thing with satellite. I remember watching an important episode of Lost and we had a snow storm-- hubby had to run outside on his pj's with a broom to sweep off the snow from the dish. Yup...it was an important episode and hubby don't even watch Lost but he'd do it for me....he's my man [:D]

Makes perfect sense from a greedy corporate viewpoint. If everybody wants to see the game, then everybody's gonna have to ante up. Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money!

Here's another thing to consider. I live in a mobile home. Any mobile home folks out there w/ satellite? kd

Talon3 -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/10/2008 8:52:03 AM)

I have Charter Cable for tv, internet, and phone. We just recently added the phone because it was cheaper with the current bundle offer to add the phone to our current services then not have it. When the introductory offer runs out for something after a year, I've gone back to cut back on the services, and they have in the past put me back on the introductory offer. I didn't even tell them that I was considering going to satellite because until recently, I haven't thought about seriously switching.

My sister used to live in a mobile home and she had satellite for years with no problem.

So did my aunt, all you need is a view of the south sky. The only way you wouldn't be able to get sat is if your Homeowner's association wouldn't allow. The FCC has a ruling that satellite is allowed in apartments as long as its not in a common area.

stateofgrace -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/10/2008 7:02:16 PM)

I think it's great that our options are (slowly) increasing...from more channels/better signal on digital over-the-air tv, to many communities having 2, 3, 4 choices for providers between satellite, cable, FIOS etc.

gaylel1 -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/10/2008 8:59:31 PM)

I have Directv and love it. It is better than Cable and cable is not a good idea.

Rufas2000 -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/11/2008 1:41:48 AM)

My Mom has cable (Bright House) and I have DirecTV. I prefer DirecTV. The DVR is much better, although Dish Network's is even better. The DirecTV DVR has a couple of minor features I really like though like an on demand weather screen via the "active" channel and being able to set all recordings to default at 2 minutes before the show (or other lengths before and after, DISH just has after). There are other minor features of the program guide and such that I like. Another minor thing that I like is that the broadcast channels are where they are supposed to be. For example local ABC affiliate channel 28 is on channel 28 on my DirecTV whereas on my Mom's cable it is on channel 11. Sometimes its hard to remember. Bright House has a local news station called Bay News 9 (I wish I had it, score one for cable) and its on channel 6.

Another thing about the DVR is that DirecTV can and does update the software for the device via the phone line. I don't believe cable DVRs do that but I'm not sure. My Mom's is not even hooked to a phone line. This means they can add features (though I suppose not major ones) and fix software glitches (which the DirecTV DVR does struggle with). Finally, the DirecTV DVR is a bit slow to respond compared to the BH one.

I only mention it because its a significant difference that I've noticed between DirecTV (or DISH) and cable. Of course cable DVRs tend to differ (as they aren't all the same one) but CNET has said that overall the cable DVRs are not as good. Of course if you don't care about it then this stuff doesn't matter to you but if you're going to get cable or satellite I'd consider it. Usually you can get good deals on this stuff and DVR is just flat out awesome. You can watch everything you want to without being locked in to certain time periods. However, I would not recommend it to anyone trying to limit how much TV they watch. Real life conflicting with the TV schedule is very helpful if you want to watch less TV.

On to other issues: as far as reliability the DirecTV does go out more often but most of the time it fixes itself shortly. Cable rarely goes out (in my experience) but when it does someone has to fix it which takes longer.

Cost increase: when I first got DirecTV I got three months of all the premium stuff for free but I remembered to cancel it, other than that there was no steep increase after three months. They have raised the rates a little but not too bad. Note if I had not cancelled the premium stuff I would have been charged for it after the free period was over, they don't cancel it automatically. My Mom has not experienced a steep price increase after a temporary lower price either.

On a related topic I've never had a billing issue with DirecTV. Note however that I am on auto payment (which has never been a problem) and order no pay per view stuff. I got my first bill very late and I was assessed a late charge that was later fixed. My friends have told me about misfortunes with DirecTV in the area of billing. One friend's bank account had a much greater amount withdrawn than he expected and caused some checks to bounce. I'm not sure whose fault that was but I believe it got fixed. Another friend says he was overcharged but I'm not sure if that is accurate.

The main issue to consider is programming. You mentioned sports, DirecTV is a great choice for sports as they have all those sports packages as well as the NFL Network and the Big Ten Network. Some cable companies have some or all of them and some don't. For me, I like that I have Boomerang and my Mom's cable does not. My Mom has American Life TV and I do not. But VH-1 shares a channel with VH-1. And I get NFL Network and she does not. So in my case the programming advantage for me goes to DirecTV, although I really would like that American Life TV. If you are interested in HD you may want DirecTV as they have the most HD channels (they're actually telling the truth in their ad).

Another bonus: music channels. DirecTV has many of the XM channels, DISH has many of the Sirius channels (and some other ones that fill in the gap). Cable usually has the music choice channels. they aren't bad (the trivia and facts on the screen are fun but no DJs like XM or Sirius) but I prefer the XM (Eddie Trunk Live rocks) and I'm thinking Sirius would be the same way for me.

Cable has a lot of on demand stuff and DirecTV does not. In case you don't know Some channels make some of their programming available on demand or whenever you would like to watch it. Consider those on demand options, they may swing you toward cable.

The package you choose will affect what channels you get as well obviously. I have the Choice Plus package, this is the highest one without premium channels or all the local sports networks.

Of course the programming comparison will be different in your area, I'm just using this as an example, thinking other places may be similar. Keep in mind though that my Mom (and I) live in a fairly small town so that figures into it (although the channel lineups in nearby big city Tampa are not much different). Also, this comparison is much less useful if your area has Comcast or another cable provider instead of or in addition to Bright House.

I hoped this helped. I don't work for DirecTV, trust me. Just calling it like I see it.

I have Bright House too and used to have Dish network and like I posted before 'had no problem at all with satellite. One thing that cable have also that satellite don't are the local community programs. There was a time when our school district was going through a change and they had it on the local cable channel but since we had satellite-- we did not have it and had to wait for hard copies through the mail on what went on. It also had local school programs that they air and it's a hoot watching some of the kids we know singing or acting in the school's performances.

wareaglekd -> RE: Cable or Satellite - What to Do?!!!!!! (6/11/2008 9:19:30 AM)

So, the question I have is I already have issues w/ just the clouds moving affecting antenna pick up. Should I just always make sure that when bad weather is expected, I could just turn on the DVR & that will take care of preserving the shows so I won't have to miss them?

Also, for me it's not a big huge sports issue. I just want to be able to watch Auburn Football during the season & 90% of the games are picked up by ESPN. I would also like to get back into viewing regular ice skating & you can't get enough just watching it on ABC, so Sports Network & ESPN would be good for that. Like I said, I think it's extremely unfair to put ESPN on basic expanded when everyone in my area needs ESPN during football season. It's just downright cruel considering how much cable costs anyway. I also think the average person could be getting charged more so that apartment complexes in the college town can give basic cable to their renters free.

I guess what I want is something that is not going to screw me over in the long run. I can't really afford to put this luxury back into my pathetic pay check, but I guess I have no choice w/ the changes happening next February, so I want to make the best affordable choice possible just to satisfy only a few basic needs & buying these huge packages aren't what I need. I don't need all those movie channels, etc. I just want clearer viewing of local stations & Fox & not to be taken advantage of come February. kd
